  • The sound absorption coefficient of glass wool (bulk density of 48 kg/$m^3$ and 32 kg/$m^3$) was measured by reverberation room method as varying their cross-sectional area. The results show that the absorption is larger for smaller samples because of edge effect. The absorption coefficient with two different kinds of sources, 1/3-octave band and white noise, gives similar values.

  • To study optical properties of Ag-Au alloys as the simplest homogeneous diordered alloys, the dependence of the reflectivity of Ag-Au alloys on their composition has been measured with the wave lengths ranging from 700m${\mu}$ to 900m${\mu}$. Measurements were made on mechanically polished bulk samples and the experimental results are discussed in terms of the Drude-Zender theory. The distributions on the reflectivity of various wavelengths are also discussed.

  • This study was desinged to find out the effects of soil physical properties on root development of barley. Barley fields were selected in consideration of drainage class and texture. Soil hardness were measured at the field. Soil bulk density, air ratio and root distribution were obtained from the core samples. 1. The amount of roots were increased and the root were distributed deeper layers with better drainage class and finer soil texture. 2. Soil hardness was related to soil bulk density, and the regression coefficient was increased with clay content (Clay ; $r=0.837^{**}$, Clay loam ; $r=0.678^*$, and Sandy loam ; $r=0.654^*$). 3. There was a highly negative correlation ($r=-0,846^{**}$) between bulk density of subsoils and amount of roots and the root developments were markedly reduced in soil bulk density of $1.4g/cm^3$. 4. Bulk density of subsoils was decreased with worse soil drainage and finer texture. Especially, in case of clayey soil at imperfectly or moderately drained soils, the air phase was less than 20% and the barley growth was worse. 5. Root development were related to hardness in surface, bulk density and ok phase in 10-30cm layer, and air phase in 30-50cm layer.

  • This study was performed to determine the physical properties of rice hull and straw which could be used for an optimum design and operation of the handling facilities for these rice crop by-products. The properties measured were kinetic friction coefficient , bulk density, and dynamic and static angle of repose. Rice hulls with moisture content of 13% and 21% were used throughout the test while rice straws of 10% and 16% moisture were chopped into 10mm length and used for the test. Friction coefficient was calculated from the horizontal traction forces measurement when a container holding the mass of rice hull and straw was pulled over mild steel. PVC, stainless steel, and galvanized steel surface by a universal testing machine. Bulk density was measured by an apparatus consisting of filling fundel and a receiving vessel. Dynamic angle of repose which is the angle at which the material will stand when piled was calculated from the photos of bulk samples after they were flowed by gravity and accumulated on a circular surface. Static angle of repose which is the angle between the horizontal and the sloping side of the material left in the container when discharging was also measured in the similar way. Results and conclusions from this study are summarized as follows . 1. Kinetic friction coefficient of both rice hull and straw were in the range of 0.26 -0.52 and increased with the moisture content. The magnitude of friction increased in the order of galvanized steel, stainless steel, PVC ,and mild steel. 2. Bulk densities of rice hull decreased while those of rice straw increased with moisture content increase . Average bulk densities of rice hull and straw were 96.8 and 74.7kg/㎥, respectively. 3. Average dynamic angle of repose for rice straw was 32.6$^{\circ}$ and those for 13% and 21% moisture rice hull were 38.9$^{\circ}$ and 44.9$^{\circ}$ , respectively. 4. Static angles of repose for both rice hull and straw showed increase with the moisture content. The values were 75.2\ulcorner and 80.2$^{\circ}$ for 13% and 21% moisture rice hull, respectively. Rice straws having 10% and 16% moisture content showed 87.3% and 89.2$^{\circ}$ static angle of repose, respectively.

  • The objective of the present study is to assess the contribution of bulk flow to the regulatory mechanism of amniotic fluid volume and its ionic concentration in the membranes surrounding the amniotic fluid. For quantitative assessment, we prepared 4 kinds of artificial amniotic fIuids (isotonic isovolumetric, hypotonic isovolumetric, isotonic hypervolumetric and hypotonic hypervolumetric ones) by replacing 70% of amniotic fluid of pregnant rabbits with water or normal Tyrode solutions. Isoosmotic saline of 0.5 ml volume containing 0.05% Censored and 15 mM/l LiCl was administered initially into amniotic sacs of all subject animals. Samples of amniotic fluid were collected in after 30 and 90 minute intervals; the concentrations of Censored, $Na^+\;and\;Li^+$ were determined and compared. Followings are the results obtained. 1. from isovolumetric and increased Congcord group, we couldn't find significant change in $Li^+\;and\;Na^+$ concentration in isotonic amniotic fluid. However, $Na^+$ concentration increased significantly as well as a striking increase in Censored concentration in hypotonic amniotic fluid. 2. In isovoIumetric and decreased Censored group, the rate of $[Li^+]$ decrement and the rate of $[Na^+]$ increment were much higher in hypotonic amniotic fluid than in isotonic. 3. In hypervolumetric and increased Censored group, the rate of $Na^+$ efflux increased proportionately with the increment of Censored concentration up to 0.98, which was higher than the rate of $Li^+$ efflux in isotonic amniotic fluid. However, the increment of $Na^+$ concentration was rather related with the initial $Na^+$ concentration in hypotonic amniotic fluid, showing inverse relationship. $Li^+$ concentration increased only when there was a marked increase in Censored concentration and approached near a maximum value or 1. 4. For hypervolumetric and decreased Censored group, the observations were identical to isovolumetric and decreased Censored group. From these results the following conclusions could be made: 1) There is no net movement of water or monovalent cations across the membranes surrounding amniotic fIuid in isotonic isovolumetric condition. In contrast, there is a net efflux of amniotic fluid by osmotic bulk flow, resulting in elevation of $Na^+$ concentration in hypotonic isovolumetric condition. 2) In hypervolumetric conditions, there is a massive efflux of amniotic fluid or solvent drag through the surrounding membranes by fiItrative bulk flow, where the rate of $Na^+$ efflux has a linear relationship with that of water efflux. This is assumed to be carried out through enlarged and newly opened intercellular spaces resulting from increased intraamniotic pressure. 3) Once increasing intraamniotic pressure reaches a point allowing $Li^+$ to pass through during osmotic bulk flow in hypotonic amniotic fIuid, $Na^+$ influx seems to occur by diffusion simultaneously or immediately thereafter, too.

  • This study was done to determine the seroprevalence of Coxiella burnetii in cattle with reproductive disorders reared in eastern Gyeongbuk province. A total of 146 cattle blood samples from 83 farms in eastern Gyeongbuk province were collected in 2011~2012. Among them, 17 (11.6%) samples from 11 (13.3%) farms were seropositive for C. burnetii by ELISA. In dairy cattle with mastitis, 15 (38.5%) milk samples from 9 (42.9%) farms were seropositive among 39 milk samples from 21 farms. Among the seropositive farms, one farm with high seroprevalence was selected to assess the seroprevalence of C. burnetii in the bulk-tank milk (BTM) and blood samples of dairy cattle. The BTM sample from the farm was seropositive to C. burnetii and 6 (15%) out of 40 dairy cattle were seropositive. In cattle with reproductive disorders including infertility, abortion and stillbirth, 2 (1.9%) samples from 2 (3.2%) farms were positive among 107 samples collected from 62 farms. Among 2 positive samples, one of them is dariy cattle (100%) and the other is Korean cattle (0.9%) (P<0.001). This suggests that Korean cattle was relatively resistant to C. burnetii. Based on the data obtained, we identified association between C. burnetii shedding in milk and chronic subclinical mastitis in dairy cattle. Since seroprevalence of C. burnetii is relatively high in dairy cattle, further intensive studies on C. burnetii among the high risk milk farms and dairy cattle herds are needed to evaluate infection status.

  • In order to understand the precipitation acidity and chemical composition of ion species in Iksan area as well as to know the difference of chemical characteristics in precipitation samples from the viewpoint of precipitation sampling method, precipitation samples were collected by wet-only automatic precipitation sampler and bulk manual precipitation sampler in Iksan, from March 2003 to August 2003. The mean pH of precipitation was 5.0. There was a little significant difference in the mean value of pH between automatic and manual sampler. However, pH values of some precipitation samples were lower in automatic sampler than in manual sampler, especially in case of precipitation samples with small rainfall for March 2003. The mean concentrations of each ions in precipitation were generally a little higher in precipitation samples collected by the manual sampler than in those collected by the automatic sampler because of accumulation of dry deposition on the surface of glass funnel installed at the manual sampler during the sampling period or no rainfall. Dominant species determining the acidity of precipitation, were N $H_4$$^{[-10]}$ and nss-C $a^{2+}$ for cations and nss-S $O_4$$^{2-}$ and N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ for anions. The mean concentration of N $H_4$$^{+}$ and nss-C $a^{2+}$ were 31 $\mu$eq/L and 9 $\mu$eq/L for the automatic sampler and 40 ueq/L and 16 ueq/L for the manual sampler, respectively. In addition, nss-S $O_4$$^{2-}$ and N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ were 27 $\mu$eq/L and 13 $\mu$eq/L for the automatic sampler and 32 $\mu$eq/L and 17 $\mu$eq/L for the manual sampler, respectively. Although the concentrations of the acidifying ions of nss-S $O_4$$^{2-}$ and N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ were about 3 times higher than those for foreign pristine sites, precipitation acidity were estimated to be natural due to the neutralization reaction of the alkaline species of N $H_4$$^{+}$ and nss-C $a^{2+}$ with its higher concentrations. Considering the ratios of nss-S $O_4$$^{2-}$/N $O_4$$^{[-10]}$ nss-S $O_4$$^{2-}$, it was found that ammonium sulphate was dominant in Iksan precipitation. The major non-sea salt ions were maximum concentrations for March, but decreased with increasing of precipitation amount.on amount.

  • Charge dynamics in polymeric materials after aged under ac electric field using the pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) technique is reported. The emphasis is placed on charge decay. The charge dynamics of the ac aged additive free low density polyethylene (LDPE) samples under dc bias differ from the sample without ac ageing, indicating changes brought in by ac ageing. It is believed that a slow decay rate of charge in the ac aged sample is related to the formation of deep traps in the material. However, chemical analysis by infrared spectroscope (FTIR) and Raman microscope reveals no significant chemical changes taken place in the bulk of the material after ac ageing. Further experiments on irradiated LDPE have revealed a similar behaviour, i.e. the charge decay is slower in irradiated samples than that of fresh sample. The findings presented clearly indicate that space charge measurement can be used as a diagnostic tool to monitor ageing in polymeric materials.

  • The row-by-row heat transfer characteristics of fin-and-tube heat exchangers having wavy fins were experimentally investigated. Three samples having different rows (one, two and three) were tested. Results show that the heat transfer coefficient is strongly dependent on the tube row. The heat transfer coefficient of the first row is larger than those of second or third rows. However, the difference decreases as the Reynolds number increases. The heat transfer coefficients of the second and the third row are approximately the same, probably due to increased mixing of bulk flow by wavy channels. Although samples have different tube row, the heat transfer coefficients of same row are approximately the same.

  • Granite core samples and bulk samples were first subjected to petrographic examination to determine weathering degrees. Secondly, their physical or mechanical properties including specific gravity, porosity, sonic wave velocity and uniaxial compressive strength were measured. The results were correlated to investigate the influences between properties including physical and mechanical properties, weathering degrees, and rock textures. Porosity and P wave velocity were found the most useful indices in determining the weathering degrees of granites.
