Thermal storage plays an important role in building energy saving, which is greatly assisted by the incorporation of latent heat storage in building materials. A phase change material is a substance with a high heat of fusion which, melting and solidifying at a certain temperature, can be storing and releasing large amount of energy. Heat is stored or released when the material changes from solid to liquid. Integration of building materials incorporating PCMs into the building envelope can result in increased efficiency of the built environment. The aim of this research is to identify thermal performance of PCMs impregnated building materials which is applied to interior of building such as gypsum and red clay. In order to analyze thermal performance of phase change materials, test-cell experiments and simulation analysis were carried out. The results show that micro-encapsulated PCM has an effect to maintain a constant indoor temperature using latent heat through the test-cell experiments. PCM wallboard makes it possible to reduce the fluctuation of room temperature and heating and cooling load by using EnergyPlus simulation program. Phase change material can store solar energy directly in buildings. Increasing the heat capacity of a building is capable of improving human comfort by decreasing the frequency of indoor air temperature swings so that the interior air temperature is closer to the desired temperature for a long period of time.

This study used a building model made up of cement, brick, and wood to measure temperature and relative humidity for 3 days in a closed environment with a diameter of 900 mm, and performed a comparative analysis of the effect of types of building materials on the indoor temperature environment and heat transfer characteristics. The water installed inside the building model represented the person in the room and was used to assess how the environment effects the person. Wooden building model showed the lowest heat loss due to the higher thermal insulation properties than cement and brick buildings. The thermal comfort of each building model was calculated using temperature and relative humidity, and the wooden building model created a more pleasant environment than the cement and brick building models.
Sick building syndrome symptoms that are experienced by building occupants may be caused by toxic substances such as formaldehyde and VOCs, which are known to be emitted from building materials and wood composite products such as wood-based panel, furniture, engineered flooring and construction adhesive. In Korea, the use of wood composite products for indoor environments has increased over the last decade. Recently, wood composite products have been installed in approximately 95% of newly constructed residential buildings. The use of these products has resulted in problems related to human health, and consequently a realization about the importance of indoor air quality. In addition, consumer demand is increasing for natural materials because conventional building materials and wood composite products are made by adding urea-formaldehyde resin or they contain formaldehyde-based resin. More recently, many efforts have been made to reduce formaldehyde emission from building materials that laid in the indoor environment. Especially, if conventional formaldehyde-based adhesives are replaced with green adhesives for residential spaces, it is possible to reduce most of the emission amounts of formaldehyde in indoor environments. In line with this expectation, many researches are being conducted using natural materials such as tannin and cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL). This study discussed the affects and possibilities of green adhesives to reduce formaldehyde emission in indoor environments.
Nowadays, according to many studies, indoor space's pollution level is two to ten times higher than outdoor space's. This result arouses our attention. The major causes of deterioration of indoor air quality are the lack of ventilation caused by draught-proofing and insulation construction, and harmful chemical substances emitted from building materials, office machine and furniture. Therefore, we are continuing research to find the method for healthful house and production of many forms of well-being goods. However, because of exaggerated advertisements and the lack of accurate information, consumers choose the products whose performance is not verified. Therefore, this study investigates the actual conditions of pollution by building materials and the extent of the health damage by this pollution, and suggests the method for minimizing indoor pollution in aspect of indoor environment control and the use of environment friendly materials. But the building materials presented in this study are limited to the environment friendly construction materials that are in circulation In domestic market because this research is primarily aimed to give domestic consumers the standard for selecting this materials.
Recently, the number of cases of fire spreading due to exterior materials of buildings is increasing. Due to the nature of modern architecture, which emphasizes the aesthetics of buildings, because buildings pursue a splendid appearance, they are inexpensive and have relatively good insulation performance, but an increasing number of buildings are adopting insulation materials that have poor fire safety performance. The risk of spread is also greatly increased. Since the exterior wall of a building is made of a variety of materials and structures, it is composed of a combination of several elements, including materials such as insulation and finishing materials. Therefore, it was determined that it was necessary to introduce a more systematic evaluation method for building exterior materials, and to improve the system reflecting this, away from the existing evaluation method that only checked the fire safety performance of finishing materials.

In Korea, the concentration of cities has led to the high-rise and deep-rise of buildings. In the case of such high-rise buildings, there is a high risk of fire, and the number of internal fires expanding to the outside continues to increase. The Korean Building Act continues to change the ban on combustible exterior materials, and combustible exterior materials are currently not available for buildings with three stories or more than 9 meters, and detailed test standards for finishing materials are also strengthened after the Ulsan residential and commercial fires in 2020. However, the path of fire in the actual building is through a series of processes in which the fire in the compartment grows internally and expands through openings supplied with ventilation factors. Therefore, other than just external materials, design criteria for embedded materials also need to be established. The purpose of this study is to compare standards for internal and external materials at home and abroad and to secure basic data for fire safety design of buildings based on them.

The fire compartments with fire-resistant construction are installed in the principal structural parts of a building in order to reduce damage in the event of a building fire. As a fire may spread through a crack in the fire compartment, the firestop with secured performance is used according to the procedure, methods, and standards specified in the detailed operation guideline. According to the current detailed operation guideline, vertical members (wall penetration) and horizontal members (floor penetration) are classified into different categories respective to each other for the classification of the firestop. Therefore, an accreditation applicant must apply for the performance test for each structure even if the wall and the floor have the same structure. Also, Grade T is used for the firestop that penetrates the fire compartment. However, in the case of foreign countries, the use of Grade F for the firestop is allowed even if it penetrates the fire compartment. The result of the precedent studies also showed that there was a significantly low possibility of fire to spread even if Grade F was applied for a metallic duct that penetrated the fire compartment. In this study, the improved scheme for the classification and performance standard of firestops was presented by analyzing the results of precedent studies regarding the firestop and domestic and overseas firestop qualification systems.
Many researches and policies have been carried out for saving energy in buildings. However, there are a few studies of thermal characteristics of wood-based materials that have been widely used as structural materials and finishing materials in buildings. In this study, thermal bridging areas were found to investigate thermal performance of residential building using non wood-based materials and wood-based materials. And heat transfer analysis of 16 case studies according to composition of structural materials and finishing materials was conducted. Also in this experiment, Physibel Trisco was used as the heat transfer analysis simulation tool, which conforms to the calculation method of ISO 10211. Analytical modeling was also carried out according to the ISO 10211, and the boundary temperature conditions were set at room temperature $20^{\circ}C$ and outdoor temperature $-11.3^{\circ}C$ (Seoul standard) according to the energy saving design standard in South Korea. Applied structures are classified according to the cases of concrete structure with non wood-based finishing materials, concrete structure with wood-based finishing materials and wood structure. Analyzed building elements were divided into a wall, a roof, an interlayer floor and a bottom floor. As a result, it can be confirmed that the thermal bridge of the concrete structure and wood structure were caused by the geometrical and material causes. In addition, the structural thermal bridge was caused in the discontinuity of the insulation in the concrete structure. Also it was confirmed that the linear heat transfer coefficient of the wall decreases when the wood-based materials are applied to the concrete structure.
The asbestos contents in some representative building materials were analyzed using JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) X-ray diffraction (XRD) method. The changes in mineral composition during analysis process and problems in JIS method were also examined. XRD analysis of some representative domestic building materials used for roof, wall, ceiling, and floor indicates that slate have the highest asbestos content having 6.87~6.93% of chrysotile. Other building materials analyzed in this study also have 1.35~3.98% of chrysotile contents. The XRD analysis results of asbestos contents in some domestic building materials are presented in this study. This method is very effective for the asbestos content evaluation of building materials according to newly modified asbestos content regulation (Law of Industrial Safety and Health, 2007-26) that limits asbestos content less than 0.1% by Ministry of Employment and Labor. Small amount of tremolite as well as chrysotile were also observed in some samples. With consideration of crystal shape, contents and geological occurrence, it is considered that tremolite is an associated mineral of chrysotile and is not intentionally added. Complemental analyses with optical microscope and SEM/EDS are also necessary because XRD method cannot distinguish asbestiform from non-asbestiform. The XRD method applied in this study is very effective in the asbestos content analysis of building materials, specially building materials showing high asbestos concentration in residues due to the high loss rate with ashing and acid dissolution procedure.
