  • The aim of the research is evaluating the feasibility of inspection for early age frozen damage and for expansion of concrete under the various time periods of -20℃ temperature condition. When the concrete samples were exposed for 12 hours and 24 hours, the frozen depth of the concrete were 10 and 60 mm, respectively, under the wet conditions. From the experiment results of temperature and expansion, only surface area suffered frozen damage for 12 hours exposing conditions while entire area suffered frozen damage for 24 hours exposing conditions.

  • Early-frost damages easily take place in smaller and thinner walls and slabs. In case of slabs, it is difficult to visually determine the depth of early-frost damage. As such, the current study aims to determine the depth of early-frost damage caused to concrete structures due to bad curing in the winter. As a result, the study found that the depth of early-frost damages increased from the top as the atmospheric temperature on the concrete surface decreased. The changes in the color allowed the observer to easily identify the depth of early-frost damage with the naked eye. In particular, the color difference between potentially damaged parts and undamaged parts were the greatest around thirty minutes of drying after wetting.

  • Installing accelerometers in a building is an effective way to know how the building shakes when an earthquake happens. In this paper, we will introduce an example of an analysis that captures the acceleration reduction effect of the vibration damping device using data observed by the accelerometer at Roppongi Hills Mori Tower in Minato-ku, Tokyo, during the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011. Moreover, as the latest effort, from the standpoint of a developer who builds and operates a number of high-rise buildings in Japan, where frequent earthquakes are experienced, a system for real-time processing of accelerometer data was developed to instantly diagnose the degree of damage to high-rise buildings, and the actual system of earthquake damage health monitoring is discussed. This system is currently in operation in twelve high-rise buildings including Roppongi Hills Mori Tower.

  • Termites are important sub-baits of natural ecosystems and are beneficial insects that are natural decomposer. However, the building materials used by human beings can not coexist with each other on timber which is a termite food. As of 2017, due to fertile forests, warming, and the spread of boilers, termite damage to timber construction is increasingly occurring day by day. Currently, Korea utilizes fumigation, Beit system, preserved wood, etc. of chemical products as termite control measures. But in the case of control measures, timber that has already been eaten by termites can not serve as a structural material and must be repaired. On the other hand, in the case of overseas, Scale of damage to termites the influence on the construction is also large, and a lot of research has been carried out on the prevention methods. In this thesis, investigate such foreign control measures, Would like to suggest a suitable method for Korea.

  • In the design and maintenance of buildings, identifying the degree of damage in the event of a fire is an important factor in fire prevention and fire safety design. In order to predict fire damage, safety measures should be established by predicting the nature of evacuation according to fire, smoke and in-house characteristics, and the effects of the operation of fire safety facilities should also be considered, but in Korea, the risk analysis due to the operation of fire safety facilities is insufficient. Accordingly, this study uses fire statistics and sprinkler inspection data to analyze the degree of fire damage caused by the operation of sprinkler facilities in a probabilistic manner.

  • The proposed research includes a comprehensive study on the seismic vulnerability assessment of typical building types, representative of the structural materials, the seismic codes and the construction techniques of Southern Europe. A damage database is created after the elaboration of the results of the observational data obtained from post-earthquake surveys carried out in the area struck by the September 7, 1999 Athens earthquake, a near field seismic event in an extended urban region. The observational database comprises 180.945 buildings which developed damage of varying degree, type and extent. The dataset is elaborated in order to gather useful information about the structural parameters influence on the seismic vulnerability and their correlation to the type and degree of building damages in near field earthquakes. The damage calibration of the observational data was based on label - damage provided by Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization (EPPO) in Greece and referred to the qualitative characterization for the recording of damage in post-earthquake surveys. Important conclusions are drawn on the parameters that influence the seismic response based on the wide homogeneous database which adds to the reliability of the collected information and reduces the scatter on the produced results.

  • Based on the reconnaissance of buildings in Dujiangyan City during 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, China, structural damage characteristics and the spatial distribution of structural damage are investigated, and the possible reasons for the extraordinary features are discussed with consideration of the influence of urban historical evolution and spatial variation of earthquake motions. Firstly, the urban plan and typical characteristics of structural seismic damage are briefly presented and summarized. Spatial distribution of structural damage is then comparatively analyzed by classifying all surveyed buildings in accordance with different construction age, considering the influence of seismic design code on urban buildings. Finally, the influences of evolution of seismic design code, topographic condition, local site and distance from fault rupture on spatial distribution of structural damage are comprehensively discussed. It is concluded that spatial variation of earthquake motions, resulting from topography, local site effect and fault rupture, are very important factor leading to the extraordinary spatial distribution of building damage except the evolution of seismic design codes. It is necessary that the spatial distribution of earthquake motions should be considered in seismic design of structures located in complicated topography area and near active faults.

  • This study is to investigate the damage assessment of adjacent structures due to tunneling in urban environment. Model tests were carried out with two-story masonry building structures in various shapes and locations. The damage level of adjacent structures were very differently estimated in accordance with the shape ratio (L/h) of structures, construction stages, and various locations. The results of model tests were plotted on the damage level graphs in order to predict the direction of damage levels for the different types of structures (i.e. stiffness of structures, L/h). The progressive crack development mechanism at various construction stages was revealed through model tests and crack size indicated more conservative side of damage level on the damage level graph.

  • The protection of adjacent structures in urban excavation has been an important issue. But the research on the interaction between ground movements and adjacent structure has been scarce, therefore this study was necessitated. Current design practice for the prediction of excavation-induced ground movements heavily rely on empirical method. In this study, damage levels of brick building are examined closely by means of angular distortion, deflection ratio, horizontal strain. The results of numerical analysis indicated that the movement of actual building was 60∼65% of the ground movement, while angular distortion was 45∼65%. Also numerical analysis for the assessment of brick building can be applied to the building protection at various construction stages.
