Dynamic characteristics, named as natural frequencies, damping ratios and mode shapes, affect the dynamic behavior of buildings and they vary depending on the construction stages. It is aimed to present the effects of construction stages on the dynamic characteristics of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings considering theoretical and experimental investigations. For this purpose, a three-storey RC building model with a 1/2 scale was constructed in the laboratory of Civil Engineering Department at Karadeniz Technical University. The modal testing measurements were performed by using Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) method for the bare frame, brick walled and coated cases of the building model. Randomly generated loads by impact hammer were used to vibrate the building model; the responses were measured by uni-axial seismic accelerometers as acceleration. The building's modal parameters at these construction stages were extracted from the processed signals using the Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition (EFDD) technique. Also, the finite element models of each case were developed and modal analyses were performed. It was observed from the experimental and theoretical investigations that the natural frequencies of the building model varied depending on the construction stages considerably.
This study aims to monitor the variation of modal frequencies of steel buildings during their construction sequence. In this respect, construction of a steel building is followed by vibration based measurements. The monitored building is a three-story educational building within a building group whose structural system consists of steel moment resisting steel frames and eccentric braces. Five different acceleration measurements in two perpendicular directions are taken on five different construction stages, starting from the erection of the columns and beams ending with the completion of the construction. The recorded measurements are transferred into frequency domain and the dominant frequencies for each case have been determined. The change in the dominant frequencies is evaluated with the existing construction stages and performed constructional works between the stages. The last measurement, performed on the building in service, revealed the first two dominant frequencies as mutual in X and Y direction, showing that these dynamic modes are torsional modes. This result is investigated by numerical analysis performed with finite element model of the building constructed for design purpose. Lower frequencies and different mode shapes are determined from numerical analysis. The reason of lower frequencies is discussed and the vibration survey is extended to determine the effects of an adjacent building. The results showed that the building is in strong relation with an adjoining building in spite of a designed construction joint.
There are many researches to make low-energy building. Lots of them focus on facility systems and insulation performance of building materials. However, not only systematic solutions but also approaches in early design stages are important to reduce energy consumption. Using BIM(Building Information Modelling) is considered as an effective and efficient way to simulate building energy and decide alternatives than traditional energy simulation because BIM based energy simulation makes to reduce much time for energy modeling. This study focuses on development of optimized geometry for super tall office buildings in Seoul, Korea. Specifically, length to width ratio and building orientation are main topics of this study because these two topics are the most basic and preceding factors deciding mass design. In this study, Revit MEP 2011 and Ecotect Analysis 2011 are used to make case models and calculate energy load in early design stages. Energy properties of material abide by Korean Standards for Energy Conservation in Building, Korean Guideline for Energy Conservation in Public Office and ASHRAE Standard in USA. This study presents best length to width ratio of plan and optimized orientation by evaluating the case models. Furthermore, this study suggests what should be considered for each case to decrease energy load.
This study focuses on applying performance-based design to construction standard in building construction. First, it realizes situation and issues of standard specification in building construction, deduces the need factors for establishing performance-based construction standard, and then, it proposes the application of performance standard. The required stages for deducing performance-based construction standard consist of dividing building parts, deducing required functions, performance items and performance requirement and deciding a method of performance evaluation. Through these stages, performance-based design process is deduced.

Various programs have been developed to predict the energy consumption of a building as a result of recent increased social interest in the environmental friendliness of construction as measured by energy efficiency. The goal of environmental-friendliness, which is achieved by predicting the energy consumption of a building, can be realized in the design stage by applying a variety of technologies, planning factors and planning systems. However, most energy analyzing engines are only suitable for use in the advanced stages of design because of the large amount of design information that must be entered. Thus, because the simulation programs currently used are not suitable for use in the early stages of design, this study suggests a prediction logic that provides an overview of the energy consumption of a building according to its size, scope, and purpose by analyzing statistics collected by government agencies.
This paper outlines the processes and strategies studied and selected by the team during the design stages of the project for the incorporation of BIPV into the tower's façade. The goal was to create a system that helps reduce internal heating and cooling loads while collecting energy through photovoltaic panels located throughout the building. The process used to develop this façade system can be broken down into three stages. 1. Concept: BIPV as design catalyst for a high-rise building. 2. Optimization: Balancing BIPV and Human comfort. 3. Integration: Incorporating BIPV into a custom curtain wall design. The FKI Project clearly illustrates the evolution building enclosures from simple wall systems to high performance integrated architectural and engineering design solutions. This design process and execution of this project represent the design philosophy of our firm.
Construction project consists of several stages such as planning, design, construction, operation/maintain, etc. Decisions made in the planning and design stage have a significant impact on the construction and operation/maintain stages. Identifying key resources contributing to duration and cost of design alternatives is an important measure to achieve effective coordination between design and construction. This study proposes a method which finds an optimal design alternative by taking into account of resource planning, expected duration, and cost in construction stage. Base on literature review relative to the assessment of design alternatives, a method which predicts required resources, duration, and cost of the design alternative is established. Then, a method that identifies an optimal design alternative based on the preference of a certain project criteria is developed. Finally, a case study is presented.
