Internet telephony is an application that transmits voice data for conversation. Therefore it must provide high sound quality. However while audio packets are transferred through the network, they are affected by delay variations and jitters, which could result in poor sound quality if the receiving end does not have an appropriate jitter buffer to overcome network factors. This thesis introduces a buffer management algorithm that could be used to provide better sound quality for Internet phone terminals. This algorithm actively responds to both the compression algorithms that are used by the terminals, as well as to the received data to provide an improvement in sound quality. In order to confirm the validity of the suggested algorithm, comparisons of the performance have been made between the existing buffer management algorithms and this new algorithm in various network settings.

The multimedia data for video-on-demand(VOD) service has large, continuous and real time characteristics. The frequent disk I/O operations takes much time and decrease the system performance in multimedia services. Therefore the efficient buffer management is needed in order to reduce the disk accesses to multimedia data. This paper addresses how to increase the buffer hit ratio and the number of users in a multimedia service like VOD by increasing the utility of buffer. This paper also simulated various resource management algorithms and strategies and evaluated, compared and analyzed their performances.
Efficient buffer management is closely related to system performance. Thus, much research has been performed on various buffer management techniques. However, many of the proposed techniques utilize the temporal locality of access patterns. In spatial database environments, there exists not only the temporal locality but also spatial locality, where the objects in the recently accessed regions will be accessed again in the near future. Thus, in this paper, we present a buffer management technique, called BEAT, which utilizes both the temporal locality and spatial locality in spatial database environments. The experimental results with real-life and synthetic data demonstrate the efficiency of BEAT.

This study is situated in the context of intelligent transport systems, where in-vehicle devices assist drivers to avoid accidents and therefore improve road safety. The vehicles present in a given area form an ad' hoc network of vehicles called vehicular ad' hoc network. In this type of network, the nodes are mobile vehicles and the messages exchanged are messages to warn about obstacles that may hinder the correct driving. Node mobilities make it impossible for inter-node communication to be end-to-end. Recognizing this characteristic has led to delay-tolerant vehicular networks. Embedded devices have small buffers (memory) to hold messages that a node needs to transmit when no other node is within its visibility range for transmission. The performance of a vehicular delay-tolerant network is closely tied to the successful management of the nodes' transit buffer. In this paper, we propose a message transit buffer management model for nodes in vehicular delay tolerant networks. This model consists in setting up, on the one hand, a policy of dropping messages from the buffer when the buffer is full and must receive a new message. This drop policy is based on the concept of intermediate node to destination, queues and priority class of service. It is also based on the properties of the message (size, weight, number of hops, number of replications, remaining time-to-live, etc.). On the other hand, the model defines the policy for selecting the message to be transmitted. The proposed model was evaluated with the ONE opportunistic network simulator based on a 4000m x 4000m area of downtown Bouaké in Côte d'Ivoire. The map data were imported using the Open Street Map tool. The results obtained show that our model improves the delivery ratio of security alert messages, reduces their delivery delay and network overload compared to the existing model. This improvement in communication within a network of vehicles can contribute to the improvement of road safety.

Critical Chain Project Management(CCPM) is a new project management system paradigm which maintains the advantages of PERT/CPM and improves the shortcomings of it. In CCPM the task durations are determined as 50% time estimates, ie average time discarding the their contingency. CCPM determines the critical chain the constraint of a projects considering the logical precedence relationship and resource conflict resolution. Project buffer is located at the end of critical chain to absorb the variations of critical chain. The size of project buffer is usually calculated as the half of the sum of critical chain length. Also feeding buffer is inserted after each non-critical chain which feeding into the critical chain to prevent the time delay of critical chain from uncertainties of non-critical chains. Resource buffer can be utilized to improve the availability of resources of critical chain. Buffer management is a project execution and control mechanism. Buffers are classified into 3 zones. They are OK zone, Watch and Plan zone and Expediting zone. If the project status is within Watch and Plan zone, contingency plan is established. And if it changes into Expediting zone, the preplanned contingency plan are executed to recover the time delay. In CCPM the workers are asked to work with relay runner work mechanism that they work fast if possible and report their completion to project manager for the succeeding task to start as soon as possible. The task durations are not considered as the promised time schedule. The multi-tasking is prohibited.

In a network router, packet loss may occur when it overflows due to sudden burst traffic. This paper studies how much large buffers are required to eliminate the packet losses. There are buffers on which packet arrive and one output port to which a packet is transmitted at a time. The buffer management algorithm should determine one of the buffers whose packet is transmitted to the output port at each time. The front packet belonging to the buffer determined by the algorithm is transmitted. The goal is to minimize the sum of the lengths of buffers to transmit all the packets. We provide an optimal off-line algorithm and also we show the lower bounds of on-line algorithms. The on-line algorithm has no prior information of the packets having arrived in the future. Its performance is compared to that of the optimal off-line algorithm.
In this letter, we consider an m-node tandem queue (queues in series) with a Poisson arrival process and either deterministic or non-overlapping service times. With the assumption that each node has a finite buffer except for the first node, we show the non-increasing convex property of stationary waiting time with respect to the finite buffer capacities. We apply it to an optimization problem which determines the smallest buffer capacities subject to probabilistic constraints on stationary waiting times.

We propose a hardware accelerated voxelization method for various 3D object model such as surface models, solid models, and volumetric CSG models. The algorithm utilizes the stencil buffer that is one of modern Open히 graphics hardware features. The stencil buffer is originally used to restrict drawing to certain portions of the screen. The volumetric representations of given 3D objects are constructed slice-by-slice. For each slice, the algorithm restricts the drawing areas constructed inner region of 3D objects using the stencil buffer, and generates slices of the volumetric representation for target objects. As a result, we can provide volume graphics support for various engineering applications such as multi-axis machining simulation, collision detection and finite element analysis.

This paper describes the design overview of cluster file system $SANique^{TM}$ based on SAN(Storage Area Network) environment. The design issues and problems of the conventional global buffer manager are also illustrated under a large set of clustered computing hosts. We propose the efficient global buffer management method that provides the more scalability and availability. In our proposed global buffer management method, we reuse the maintained list of lock information from our cluster lock manager. The global buffer manger can easily find and determine the location of requested data block cache based on that lock information. We present the pseudo code of the global buffer manager and illustration of global cache operation in cluster environment.
Previous buffer cache schemes for multimedia storage systems only exploited the sequential references of multimedia files and didn't consider looping references. However, in some video applications like foreign language learning, users mark the scene as loop area and then application automatically playbacks the scene several times. In this paper, we propose a new buffer replacement scheme, called HBM(Hybrid Buffer Management), for multimedia storage systems that have both sequential and looping references. Proposed scheme assumes that application layer informs reference pattern of files to file system. Then HBM applies an appropriate replacement policy to each file. Our simulation experiments show that HBM outperforms previous buffer cache schemes such as DISTANCE and LRU.
