A STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF INTERMAXILLARY FIXATION ON THE CHONDROCYTES OF RABBIT MANDIBULAR CONDYLE;A light and electron microscopic study (악간고정(顎間固定)이 가토(家兎)의 하악두(下顎頭) 연골세포(軟骨細胞)에 미치는 영향(影響)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究);광학현미경적(光學顯微鏡的) 및 전자현미경적(電子顯微鏡的) 연구(硏究))

  • The purpose of this study was to observe the effect of intermaxillary fixation on the chondrocytes of the mandibular condyle under the light and the electron microscope. For this study, twenty rabbits were placed in maxillomandibular fixation, and two were used as a control group. The experimental group was subdivided into 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28 day group. After the experimental period of 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days, the animals were sacrificed with a vascular perfusion of 2.5% glutaraldehyde. The condylar processes were exenterated, and decalcified in 0.1M EDTA with 2.5% glutaraldehyde solution for two weeks. The specimens were rinsed with phosphate buffer solution and the post-fixation was carried out with 2% osmium tetroxide at $4^{\circ}C$ for two hours. Thereafter the specimens were dehydrated in alcohol series, cleared with propylene oxide and embedded in Epon 812 resin. Thin sections and ultra-thin sections were made, and the cellular structures of the condylar cartilages were observed with light and electron microscope. The results were as follows: 1. In the intermaxillary fixation group, the cartilaginous tissues of mandibular condyles showed a marked decrease in the thickness compared to the control group. 2. A remarkable change was noticed in the proliferating and the hypertrophic zone of the condylar cartilages in the experimental group. 3. An atrophic change of the condylar cartilage was appeared in the 3 day experimental group and degenerative change was observed in the 7 day experimental group, and recovery was seen in thereafter 14 day experimental group. 4. Calcification, degeneration and resorption of condylar cartilage were recognizable, and the cellular zone of the condylar cartilage was appeared indistinctly in 3 day and 7 day experimental group. The chondroblasts, however, were differentiated into chondrocytes and resumed mitosis, and then the cellular zones of the condylar cartilage were reorganized from the 14 day experimental group under the findings of light microscope. 5. Under the findings of electron microscope, atrophic changes and decrease in number of intracellular organelles, degenerative changes of cytoplasm, and pyknosis of nuclei were observed in early stage, however, a gradual regeneration and reorganization of the intracellular organelles were observed from 14 day experimental group.

A Method of Hand Recognition for Virtual Hand Control of Virtual Reality Game Environment (가상 현실 게임 환경에서의 가상 손 제어를 위한 사용자 손 인식 방법)

  • In this paper, we propose a control method of virtual hand by the recognition of a user's hand in the virtual reality game environment. We display virtual hand on the game screen after getting the information of the user's hand movement and the direction thru input images by camera. We can utilize the movement of a user's hand as an input interface for virtual hand to select and move the object. As a hand recognition method based on the vision technology, the proposed method transforms input image from RGB color space to HSV color space, then segments the hand area using double threshold of H, S value and connected component analysis. Next, The center of gravity of the hand area can be calculated by 0 and 1 moment implementation of the segmented area. Since the center of gravity is positioned onto the center of the hand, the further apart pixels from the center of the gravity among the pixels in the segmented image can be recognized as fingertips. Finally, the axis of the hand is obtained as the vector of the center of gravity and the fingertips. In order to increase recognition stability and performance the method using a history buffer and a bounding box is also shown. The experiments on various input images show that our hand recognition method provides high level of accuracy and relatively fast stable results.

Effects of Verapamil in Cardioplegic Perfusates on the Ischemic Myocardium in Isolated Rat Heart (흰쥐의 적출된 심장에서 Verapamil이 허혈성 심근에 미치는 효과)

  • Using isolated rat heart preparations, we observed the protective effe ts of verapamil cardioplegia on ischemic myocardial injury. Isolated rat hearts were subjected to global ischemia at $25^{\circ}C$ Twenty four isolated Sprague Dawley rat hearts underwent 30 minutes of the retrograde nonworking perfusion with Krebs-Henseleit buffer solution followed by $25^{\circ}C$ cardioplegic solution (St. Thomas'Hospital Cardioplegic Solution) for 60 minutes. Before ischemic arrest, rat hearts were treated with cold cardioplegic solution in control group (n=12) and cold cardioplegic solution with verapamil (1 mg/L) in experimental group (n=12). After 60 minutes of ischemia, hemodynamic and biochemical parameters such as heart rate, left ventricular pressure (LVP), + dp/dt max, coronary flow and creatine phosphokinase (CPK) were measured before giving cardioplegia and 30 minutes after reperfusion. Verapamil group exhibited greater recovery of heart rate, LVP, +dpldt max, coronary flow and CPK than control group (p < 0.05).

The Effect of He-Ne IR Laser Therapy on The Healing of Acute Septic Knee Arthritis in Rat (흰쥐의 화농성 슬관절염 치유에 He-Ne IR레이저 처치의 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the effect of He-Ne, IR laser therapy for 4 and 10 minutes on healing of septic arthritis. Sprague-Bawley rats (212.1$\pm$10 g) were randomly assigned to one control and three arthritis groups. Septic arthritis groups were divided into arthritis control, 4 or 10 minute laser therapy groups. Arthritis was experimentally induced by intraperitoneally administration of staphylococcus aureus in citrate buffer(pH 4.3). These result were obtained as follows: AST, LDH, ALP, CK activities and IgG concentration in 10 minute laser group were signifantly increased compare with those in the arthritis group. AST, LDH and CK activities in 4 minute laser group were significantly decreased compare with those in the arthritis group. We think that laser therapy in 4 minute may effective on the healing of septic arthritis. And we will have to study of the effect of laser therapy on healing mechanism, appropriate time of septic arthritis.

Cholesterol Lowering Effect of Lactobacillus plantarum Isolated from Human Feces

  • The purpose of this study was to isolate probiotic lactic acid bacteria (LAB) that produce bile salt hydrolase (BSH), and to evaluate its effects on serum cholesterol level. One-hundred-twenty bacterial colonies were initially isolated from human feces, and five strains were selected after screening based on their resistance to acids, tolerance against bile salts, and inhibitory activity on Escherichia coli. The Lactobacillus plantarum strain with the highest level of BSH activity was identified using 16S rRNA sequences, and was named L. plantarum CK 102. L. plantarum CK 102 at a level of 1.36$\times$10$^8$cfu/ml survived in pH 2 buffer for 6 h and exhibited excellent tolerance for bile salt. Coculturing the strain with E. coli in MRS broth resulted in strong inhibition against growth of E. coli at 18 h. Furthermore, the potential effect of CK 102 on serum cholesterol level was evaluated in rats. Thirty-two rats [Sprague-Dawley (SD) male, 129$\pm$l g, 5 weeks old] were divided into four groups of eight each. For six weeks, Group 1 was fed a normal diet (negative control); Group 2 was fed a cholesterol-enriched diet (positive control); Group 3 was fed a cholesterol-enriched diet plus L. plantarum CK 102 at 1.0$\times$10$^7$cfu/ml; and Group 4 was fed a cholesterol-enriched diet plus L. plantarum CK 102 at 5.0$\times$10$^7$cfu/ml. Blood samples were collected, serum lipids were analyzed, and weights of the organs were measured. Total blood cholesterol level, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol, and free-cholesterol values were lower in rats that were fed 1. plantarum CK 102 than in those not fed L. plantarum CK 102. This cholesterol lowering effect implies that L. plantarum CK 102 could be utilized as an additive for health-assistance foods. In conclusion, these results suggest that the 1. plantarum CK 102 isolated could be used commercially as a probiotic.

A Study on a Real Time Presentation Method for Playing of a Multimedia mail on Internet (인터넷상의 동영상 메일을 재생하기 위한 실시간 연출 기법 연구)

  • In this paper, a multimedia mail including video, sound, graphic data has been proposed as the next generation mail of the text based mail. In order to develop the multimedia mail, the most outstanding problem is the fact that the multimedia data are too huge to send them to the receiving end directly. The fact of big data may cause many problems in both transferring and storing the data of the multimedia mail. Our main idea is to separate between a control program for the multimedia presentation and multimedia data. Since the size of a control program is as small as a plain text mail, it has no problem to send it attached to the internet mail to the receiver directly. Instead, the big multimedia data themselves may remain on the sender's computer or be sent to a designated server so that the data may be transferred to the receiver only when the receiver activates the play of the multimedia mail. In this scheme, our research focus is paced on the buffer management and the thread scheduling for the real time play of the multimedia mail on internet. Another problem is to provide an easy way of editing a multimedia presentation for an ordinary people having no programming knowledge. For the purposed, VIP(Visual Interface Player) has been used and the results or multimedia mail implemented on LAN has been described.

A Study on Buffering Effect of Silicagel to Control Relative Humidity in Air-tight Case (밀폐장내(密閉欌內) 실리카겔의 습도조절(濕度調節) 효과(效果) 연구(硏究))

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of ART-SORB which is commonly used in museums and galleries at home and abroad including National Museum of Korea, so as to collect useful information to control micro-environment. Experiment was conducted in air-tight condition in order to evaluate only the effect of ART-SORB excluding any influence from outside factors. A certain amount of ART-SORB considering the case size and ART-SORB in cassette type were used to evaluate the humidity controlling capability. The result showed that target humidity was reached in 10~17 hours in case of using corresponding amount of ART-SORB to the cubic volume and in 5~6 hours in case of excessive use of cassette type ART-SORB. And it also showed that humidity can be controlled in the range of RH 50~70%. In addition, ART-SORB was excellent at raising humidity at low humidity and poor at high humidity. Therefore, ART-SORB turned out to be an effective humidity buffer for controlling micro-environment of such artifacts as wooden ware, lacquer ware and paintings, which require high humidity. However, unfortunately, there are some difficulties in applying this result to real condition, given the fact that this study was conducted under firm air-tight case. Therefore, ART-SORB can be fully effective only in firm air-tight case.

The effect of calcium metaphosphate bone graft materials on bone regeneration (생분해성 Calcium Metaphosphate골이식재의 골조직재생효과에 관한 연구)

  • Periodontal regeneration therapy with bone-substituting materials has gained favorable clinical efficacy by enhancing osseous regeneration in periodontal bony defect. As bone-substituting materials, bone powder, calcium phosphate ceramic, modified forms of hydroxyapatite, and hard tissue replacement polymer have demonstrated their periodontal bony regenerative potency. Bone-substituting materials should fulfill several requirements such as biocompatibility, osteogenecity, malleability, biodegradability. The purpose of this study was to investigate biocompatibility, osteo-conduction capacity and biodegradability of $Na_2O$, $K_2O$ added calcium metaphosphate(CMP). Beta CMP was obtained by thermal treatment of anhydrous $Ca_2(H_2PO_4)_2$. $Na_2O$ and $K_2O$ were added to CMP. The change of weight of pure CMP, $Na_2O$-CMP, and $K_2O$-CMP in Tris-buffer solution and simulated body fluid for 30 days was measured. Twenty four Newzealand white rabbits were used in negative control, positive control(Bio-Oss), pure CMP group, 5% $Na_2$-CMP group, 10% $Na_2O$-CMP goup, and 5% $K_2O$-CMP group. In each group, graft materials were placed in right and left parietal bone defects(diameter 10mm) of rabbit. The animals were sacrificed at 3 months and 6 months after implantation of the graft materials. Degree of biodegradability of $K_2O$ or $Na_2O$ added CMP was greater than that of pure CMP in experimental condition. All experimental sites were healed with no clinical evidence of inflammatory response to all CMP implants. Histologic observations revealed that all CMP grafts were very biocompatible and osseous conductive, and that in $K_2O$-CMP or $Na_2O$-CMP implanted sites, there was biodegradable pattern, and that in site of new bone formation, there was no significant difference between all CMP group and DPBB(Bio-Oss) group. From this result, it was suggested that all experimental CMP group graft materials were able to use as an available bone substitution.

VLSI Design of DWT-based Image Processor for Real-Time Image Compression and Reconstruction System (실시간 영상압축과 복원시스템을 위한 DWT기반의 영상처리 프로세서의 VLSI 설계)

  • In this paper, we propose a VLSI structure of real-time image compression and reconstruction processor using 2-D discrete wavelet transform and implement into a hardware which use minimal hardware resource using ASIC library. In the implemented hardware, Data path part consists of the DWT kernel for the wavelet transform and inverse transform, quantizer/dequantizer, the huffman encoder/huffman decoder, the adder/buffer for the inverse wavelet transform, and the interface modules for input/output. Control part consists of the programming register, the controller which decodes the instructions and generates the control signals, and the status register for indicating the internal state into the external of circuit. According to the programming condition, the designed circuit has the various selective output formats which are wavelet coefficient, quantization coefficient or index, and Huffman code in image compression mode, and Huffman decoding result, reconstructed quantization coefficient, and reconstructed wavelet coefficient in image reconstructed mode. The programming register has 16 stages and one instruction can be used for a horizontal(or vertical) filtering in a level. Since each register automatically operated in the right order, 4-level discrete wavelet transform can be executed by a programming. We synthesized the designed circuit with synthesis library of Hynix 0.35um CMOS fabrication using the synthesis tool, Synopsys and extracted the gate-level netlist. From the netlist, timing information was extracted using Vela tool. We executed the timing simulation with the extracted netlist and timing information using NC-Verilog tool. Also PNR and layout process was executed using Apollo tool. The Implemented hardware has about 50,000 gate sizes and stably operates in 80MHz clock frequency.

Green Tea Extract Decreases the Lymphatic Absorption of Trans Fat in Rats (흰쥐에서 녹차추출물의 트랜스 지방 소장 흡수 억제 작용)

  • Excessive intake of trans fats is known to be a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Previously, we have shown that green tea extract (GTE) lowers the intestinal absorption of lipids and lipid-soluble compounds in rats. This study was conducted to investigate a possible role of GTE on the lymphatic absorption of elaidic acid, a major trans fat in the diet. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats with lymph duct cannula were infused via an intraduodenal catheter at 3.0 mL/hr for 8 hr with a lipid emulsion containing $180.0{\mu}mol$ elaidic acid, $400.0{\mu}mol$ triolein, $20.7{\mu}mol$ cholesterol, $3.1{\mu}mol$ ${\alpha}$-tocopherol, and $396.0{\mu}mol$ sodium-taurocholate with or without (control) GTE in a 24 mL PBS buffer (pH, 6.4). Simultaneously, lymph was collected hourly for 8 hr via the lymph duct cannula. There was a significant difference in lymph flow by GTE. Also, the lymphatic absorption of elaidic acid for 8 hr was significantly lower in rats infused with GTE than in those not infused with GTE. Similarly, GTE infusion decreased the lymphatic outputs of cholesterol, oleic acid, and phospholipids, compared with the controls. These findings provide clear evidence that GTE has an inhibitory effect on the intestinal absorption of elaidic acid and other lipids. Our work here provides the foundation for further studies to examine and evaluate dietary strategies to ameliorate dietary trans fats from the diet.
