We performed this study to determine the effect of Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang, as a prescription of traditional Oriental medicine, and its major ingredients on jejunal crypt survival, endogenous spleen colony formation, apopotosis in jejunal crypt cells, lethality and hematological change of mice irradiated with high and low dose of Y-radiation. Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang administration before irradiation protected the jejunal crypts (p<0.0001), increased the formation of endogenous spleen colony (p<0.05) and reduced the frequency of radiation-induced apoptosis (p<0.05). The survival rate and mean survival time of the groups treated with Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang within 30 days after the treatment were far better than the irradiation control group. In the experiment on the effect of ingredients of Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang, the result indicated that the extract of Rensan (Panax ginseng), Danggui (Angelica sinensis), Shengma (Cimicifuga heracleifolia) and Chaihu (Bupleurum falcatnosa) might have a major radioprotective effect. Although the mechanisms of this inhibitory effect remain to be elucidated, these results indicated that BU-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang might be a useful radioprotector, especially since it is a relatively nontoxic natural product. Further studies are needed to characterize better the protective nature of Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang extract and its ingredients.

Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi- Tang extracts is a traditional oriental medicine in a mixture type exhibiting strong anti-bacterial, analgesic, and chemopreventive activities. In this study, we have evaluated effects of the total and polysaccharide fraction of Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi- Tang extracts on the T cell proliferation, cytokine production, and induction of IL-2 receptor and MHC class n. For this experiment, we established CD4$^{+}$ CD8$^{[-10]}$ T cell line producing IL-2 and IFN-${\gamma}$ when stimulated with ovalbumin antigen in the presence of antigen presenting cells. The significant effect of Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang on antigen-induced T cell proliferation in the presence of antigen presenting cells was observed. The proliferation and IFN-${\gamma}$ production of T cells was increased in a dose dependent manner, and expression of IL-2 receptor on T cells and MHC class n molecule on antigen presenting cells was also induced in the presence of Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang polysaccharide fraction. It was demonstrated that polysaccharide fraction of Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang stimulates the antigen-induced T cell proliferation and the production of IFN-${\gamma}$ possibly through the increase of IL-2 receptor and MHC class n expression. Therefore Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang can be regarded as a natural and useful immunomodulator having a relatively nonotoxic property. Further studies are needed to better characterize the nature of Bu-Zhong- Yi-Qi-Tang extract.

This study was designed to evaluate the effect of Bu -Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang extracts, a prescription of traditional oriental medicine, on development of the B cells. In the bone marrow cell cultures, progenitors viability, expressions of particular cell- surface proteins and production of immunoglobulins were investigated in the presence of Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang extracts. The administration of Bu-Zhong -Yi-Qi-Tang polysaccharide fraction increased the viable cell numbers of the precursor B cells, and elevated expression levels of CD19/CD40 specific for pre-B cells after 10 days culture were demonstrated by flow cytometry analysis. The production of immunoglobulin M in the presence of polysaccharide fraction increased progressively in the culture supernatant, and preferentially induced class switching to IgG1, IgG2a and IgG3. These results indicated that Bu -Zhong -Yi-Qi -Tang strong1y correlated with the development of precursor B cells in the bone marrow cell culture. Therefore the polysaccharide fraction of Bu-Zhong-Yi -Qi-Tang might be a useful radioprotector, especially since it is a relatively non-toxic natural product. Further studies are needed to better characterize the protective nature of Bu-Zhong-Yi -Qi -Tang extract.
The purpose of this study reported here was to investigate the ability of Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang (BZYQT), known to elevate hematopoietic functions, to protect mice undergoing treatment with whole body single gamma-irradiation. BZYQT was given (25 mg/kg B.W.) intraperitoneally at 36 and 12 hours before irradiation and 30 minute and 24 hours after irradiation. Recovery of neutrophil and lymphocyte counts was significantly stimulated by extract of BZYQT. Stimulated recovery by the extract from the BZYQT was also observed in thrombocyte. However, the anti-radiation effect of erythrocyte, hemoglobin and hematocrit was not as significant as that of leukocyte. Further studies are needed to better characterize the protective nature of BZYQT extract and its ingredients.

We have investigated the effects of Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi- ang on the differentiation of murine bone marrow cells in methylcellulose culture. GM-CSF and IL-3 supported primarily the formation of granulocyte/mac-rophage colony formation. However, the addition of Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang extract yielded a significant increase in the numbers of colonies and differentiated cells in the presence of GM-CSF and IL-3. We have analyzed CD11b (Mac-1) expression of differentiated cells from bone marrow by staining with monoclonal anti-CD11b antibody. The majority of colony-forming cells were in CD11b/sup +/ population. Also Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang extract promoted the production of IL-6 and nitric oxide by macrophages. These results demonstrate that extract of Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang, a prescription of traditional oriental medicine, is effective in supporting macrophage potential of the primary colonies.
We performed this study to determine the late biological effect of gamma radiation and effect of Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang (BZYQT), a prescription of traditional Oriental medicine, on radiation-induced late biological effect (survival, hematological change, carcinogenesis) of mice irradiated with 3 Gy of gamma-radiation. There were little difference in body weights between normal and irradiated mice. Survival rate were decreased in irradiated mice and the survival rate and mean survival time of the groups treated with BZYQT were far better than the irradiation control group. A significant elevation of total leukocyte or lymphocyte counts was seen at week 4 and 12 of the group treated with BZYQT. Stimulated recovery by the extract from BZYQT was also observed in thrombocyte. Main gross findings of irradiated mice were appeared as enlargement of spleen, thymus and liver, tumorous nodules of lung and cyst or mass of ovary. Microscopically, there were various findings including hematopoietic and lymphoid tumor, lung cancer, ovarian cancer and cancer of other lesions. BZYQT reduced the incidence of tumor development. Further studies are needed to characterize better the protective nature of ingredients and active compounds.

I researched clinically one patient with Hypothyroidism who was hospitalized in DongShin Univ Shunchun Oriental Hosp. from the 4th, November, 2000 to the 13th, December, 2000. The results were obtained as follows. 1. Hypothyroidism corresponds to edema of instep (浮腫), consumption (虛勞), infantile retardation of walking (行遲), retardation in speech (語遲), inactivity of Yang-Qi(결양증). It is caused to deficiency of both Qi and blood (氣血兩虛), insufficiency of Yang of the spleen and kidneys (脾腎陽虛), decline of the fire from the vital gate (命門火衰), deficiency of yang of the heart and kidneys (心腎陽虛) 2. In internal medication, it was thought that Yi qi bu xue tang(益氣補血湯). Shao yin ren Bu zhong yi qi tang(少陰人補中益氣湯), Jia wei ta bu tang (加味大補湯) were effective. 3. In acupunture therapy, zu san li(足三里), san yin jiao(三陰交), Ren ying (人迎), Fu tu (扶突), Tian tu(天突) were used frequently and in moxibustion therapy. qi hai(氣海), zhong wan(中脘). Guan yun(關元) were used for Hypothyroidism.
Background: Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang (BZYQT) has long been used for the treatment of severe weakness caused by general fatigue, loss of appetite, or indigestion. The aim of this feasibility study is to assess the effectiveness and safety of BZYQT for the treatment of functional dyspepsia (FD) with spleen qi deficiency. Methods: This study will be conducted at a single center as a prospective, nonrandomized, nonblinded, single-arm feasibility study. A total of 30 participants diagnosed with FD in accordance with the Rome III criteria will be enrolled. All patients will receive BZYQT for 4 weeks. The primary outcome is the change in the Nepean Dyspepsia Index-Korean version (NDI-K) scores between the baseline and 4-week images. The secondary outcomes include the tongue coating thickness, blood parameters, and BZYQT Questionnaire score. The NDI-K score will be acquired four times, at Weeks 0 (baseline), 2 (during treatment), 4 (after treatment), and 8 (after follow-up). Written informed consent will be obtained from all study participants prior to enrollment. This study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board of Kyung Hee University Korean Medicine Hospital. This study protocol is registered with the national clinical trial registry of the World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry Platform. Results will be published in a journal and will be disseminated both electronically and in print. Discussion: The results of this study may serve as a guide for researchers seeking to effectively evaluate the effects of BZYQT.
A high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method for the determination of glycyrrhizic acid was developed for the quality control of traditional herbal medicinal preparation Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang (BZYQT), which is well-known herbal medicine used as tonic. RP-HPLC analysis was carried out using Capcell pak $C_{18}$ MG column $(5\;{\mu},\;150{\times}4.6\;mm)$ and a mobile phase consisting of acetonitrile and water containing 0.03% phosphoric acid (pH 2.46) at a flow rate of 1.0 ml/min. The optimum wavelength for the detection of the glycyrrhizic acid was found at 250 nm using diode-array UV/VIS detector. The glycyrrhizic acid in BZYQT shows good linearity $(r^2>0.999)$ in the range of $15\;{\mu}g/ml$ to 500 ${\mu}g/ml$. The limit of detection (LOD) was less than 5 ng and R.S.D for intra-day and inter-day reproducibility was less than 7%. The mean recovery of the glycyrrhizic acid was $97.3{\sim}113.0%$. These results suggest that the developed HPLC method is simple and efficient, and could be contributed for the quality control of commercial BZYQT products.
