  • This paper deals with electromagneitc characteristics analysis of high-speed brushless DC motor. First, under same rated and restricted conditions, four models which have different slot combinations each other are designed using 2-d finite element (FE) analyses. Designed models are analyzed and compared in terms of core loss, copper loss, eddy-current loss, etc. On the basis of analysis results, it is found that the motor with a 2-pole PM rotor and a 6-slot stator has most outstanding performances in electromagnetic aspects.

  • This paper presents a sensorless speed control of Brushless DC motor using terminal voltage of one phase. Rotor position information is extracted by indirectly sensing the Back-EMF from only one of the three terminal voltages for a three phase BLDC motor. This is a advantage for the cost saving and size reduction. Also, it can be substituted for conventional Hall-IC or encoder applied to position control.

  • This paper deals with the design of a inner rotor type Brushless DC (BLDC) motor for Electric Power Steering to reduce the cogging torque. The effect of the design parameters on the characteristic and cogging torque is analyzed by Finite Element Method (FEM). The considered design parameters are as follows : the number of pole and slot. dead-zone and skew angle. and teeth shape. The winding resistance of each motor is calculated and the characteristic curve is derived from considering reactance drop voltage for original model.

  • Brushless DC motor is a motor which is modified form DC brush motor and it does not have brushes. BLDCM is easy to centre, has wide speed range, high efficiency. However it needs speed sensor like encoder which increases the motor price and cause some faults in poor surroundings.. In this paper, for the sensorless control, the driving techniques for the initial stable start and the steady state are studied For the steady state the rotor position is determined using the measured back-EMF. To enhance the initial stating performance, the current signal from the free-wheeling diode is used. The results are conformed through the experiments.

  • This paper proposes a fast fault detection algorithm under open-circuit fault of a switch for a brushless DC(BLDC) motor drive system. This proposed method is configured without the additional devices for fault detection and identification. The fault detection and identification are achieved by a simple algorithm using the operating characteristic of the BLDC motor. After the fault identification, the drive system is reconfigured for continuous operation. This system is reconfigured by four-switch topology connecting a faulty leg to the middle point of DC-link bidirectional switches. This proposed method can also be embedded into existing BLDC motor drive systems as a subroutine without excessive computational effort. The feasibility of a the proposed fault detection algorithm is validated in simulation and experiment.

  • A new control method for precision robust position control of a brushless DC (BLDC) motor using asymptotically stable adaptive load torque observer is presented in the paper. Precision position control is obtained for the BLDC motor system approximately linearized using the field-orientation method Recently, many of these drive systems use BLDC motors to avoid backlashe. However, the disadvantages of the motor are high cost and complex control because of nonlinear characteristics. Also, the load torque disturbance directly affects the motor shaft. The application of the load torque observer is published in [1] using fixed gain. However, the motor flux linkage is not exactly known for a load torque observer. There is the problem of uncertainty to obtain very high precision position control. Therefore a model reference adaptive observer is considered to overcome the problem of unknown parameter and torque disturbance in this paper. The system stability analysis is carried out using Lyapunov stability theorem. As a result, asymptotically stable observe gain can be obtained without affecting the overall system response. The load disturbance detected by the asymptotically stable adaptive observer is compensated by feedforwarding the equivalent current which gives fast response. The experimenta results are presented in the paper.

  • In Brushless DC Motor, there are Permanent Magnets (PMs) with driving circuit and sensor for detecting to rotor position and rotation speed. In the case of using hall IC sensor which response to magnetic flux, that is required to additional sensor magnet for rotor position detecting. Most of BLDC motor, However, take asymmetrical overhang of PM in rotor instead of additional sensor magnet for operating of hall IC sensor. The asymmetrical overhang of PM occur rotor thrust to z-axis direction that is lead to not only damage of bearing but also intensive noise and vibration. Therefore, the analysis of magnet overhang effect in the side of vibration and drive to hall If sensor is required to precise. In this paper, 2-D Finite Element Method is used to solve precise field computation and thrust of z-axis direction considering asymmetrical magnet overhang. And also the z-axis thrust from the analysis result is compared to experimental result. In conclusion, the purpose of this paper minimize to noise and vibration of BLDC Motor as analyzes to asymmetrical magnet overhang effect.

  • Brushless DC motors have trapezoidal back-EMF waveform. Theoretically it should be fed with rectangular phase current in order to produce torque ripple free. Because it is drived by a voltage source inverter, perfect rectangular phase current can not available and therefore produce torque ripple. In this paper, the torque ripple due to commutation is analyzed and the practical method that can reduce the torque ripple is proposed. Experimental and simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • This paper is about the development of the 300W underwater thrusting system driven by a brushless DC motor (BLDC) for underwater robots. A design of the structure such as the structure analysis on the thrusting system using FEM and the design of the propeller using the fluid analysis has been performed. Also, a new structure such as decoupling and non-gear structure has been explained. The performance test of the designed and developed thrusting system in water and in air was undertaken and its results were compared with an existing product with high performance. The comparison results show that the developed thrusting system has better performance by 16% in forward thrusting force and by 12% in backward thrusting force.
