  • The rate of the bromine-exchange reaction between gallium bromide and i-butyl bromide in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene or nitrobenzene was measured at 19, 25 and $40^{\circ}C$, using i-butyl bromide labelled with Br-82. The results indicated that the exchange reaction was second order with respect to gallium bromide and first order with respect to i-butyl bromide. The third-order rate constant determined at $19{\circ}C$ was $3.28{\times}10^{-2}l^2{\cdot}mole^{-2}{\cdot}sec^{-1}$ in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene and $9.25{\times}10^{-3}l^2{\cdot}mole^{-2}{\cdot}sec^{-1}$ in nitrobenzene. The activation energy, the enthalpy of activation and the entropy of activation for the exchange reaction were also determined.

  • The solubilities of ethyl bromide in aniline and o-chloroaniline have been measured at 5, 15$^{\circ}$ and 25$^{\circ}$C in the presence and the absence of gallium bromide. When gallium bromide does not exist in the system, the solubility of ethyl bromide in o-chloroaniline is greater than in aniline, indicating a stronger interaction of ethyl bromide with o-chloroaniline than that with aniline. It could be thought that ethyl bromide forms unstable complex with gallium bromide in the presence of gallium bromide in the system. This complex has been assumed in various ways and evaluated, that instability constant (K value) is relatively constancy under the assumption of 1 : 1 complex, $C_2H_5Br{\cdot}GaBr_3$. Therefore, the complex forms the following equilibrium in the solution: $C_2H_5Br{\cdot}GaBr_3\;{\rightleftharpoons}\;C_2H_5Br +1/2Ga_2Br_6$ The instability of the complex of ethyl bromide with gallium bromide is compared with similar complexes of gallium bromide with methyl bromide. The changes of enthalpy, free energy and entropy fcor the dissociation of the complex are also calculated.

  • The solubility of i-butyl bromide in nitrobenzene have been measured at 19, 25 and $40^{\circ}C$ in the presence and absence of gallium bromide. In the presence of gallium bromide, 1 : 1 complex, $i-C_4H_9Br{\cdot}GaBr_3$ is formed in the solution. The instability constant K of the complex formation was evaluated from the following equilibrium equation. $i-C_4H_9Br{\cdot}GaBr_3{\rightleftharpoons}C_4H_9Br + 1/2Ga_2Br_6.$ From these result, it seems that the stabilities of the complex formation, gallium bromide with alkyl bromide, are directly related with those of the carbonium ions of alkyl bromide.

  • The solubilities of hydrogen bromide and methyl bromide in nitrobenzene and in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene have been measured in the presence and absence of gallium bromide. When gallium bromide does not exist in the system, the solubilities of HBr and MeBr in nitrobenzene are greater than in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene, indicating the greater basicity of nitrobenzene than 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene. When there exists gallium bromide in the system, the addition compounds, GaBr3·HBr and GaBr3·CH3Br, have been found to exist in solution. The addition compound of GaBr3·HBr is stable in nitrobenzene but unstable in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene. On the other hand the addition compound of $GaBr_3{\cdot}CH_3Br$ is unstable in both solvents. All of these unstable addition compounds dissociate into components to large extents according to one of the following equilibria or both: $$GaBr_3{\cdot}RBr{\leftrightarrows}GaBr_3+RBr\;GaBr_3{\cdot}RBr{\leftrightarrows}1}2\;Ga_2Br_6+RBr$.$ where R denotes either hydrogen atom or methyl group.

  • The solubilities of n-propyl bromide in nitrobenzene and in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene have been measured at 19, 25 and $40^{\circ}C$ in the presence and absence of gallium bromide. When gallium bromide does not exist in the system, the solubility of n-propyl bromide in nitrobenzene is greater than in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene, indicating a stronger interaction of n-propyl bromide with nitrobenzene than with 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene. In the presence of gallium bromide, 1: 1 complex $n-C_3H_7Br\cdotGaBr_3$ is formed in the solution. The instability constant K of the complex was evaluated. $$n-C_3H_7Br\cdotGaBr_3 \rightleftarrows n-C_3H_7Br + \frac{1}{2Ga_2Br_6 }$$The change of enthalpy, free energy and entropy for the dissociation of the complex were also calculated. It seems that the stabilities of the complex, gallium bromide with alkyl bromide, are relatively concerned with the stabilities of the alkyl ion.

  • Surfactants can be used as a cosmetics and chemical dispersants. The variation of critical micelle concentration(CMC) with temperature for hexadecyl pyridinium bromide over the range $40^{\circ}C$ to $60^{\circ}C$ has been measured by drop methods. Thermodynamic quantities for micellization of hexadecyl pyridinium bromide in water have been calculated by polynominal equation.

  • A thermal desorption-gas chromatography/mass spectrometric method was developed for the determination of methyl bromide in fumes formed during preservation of cultural materials from insects. Methyl bromide in lunes was collected by drawing 10ι of air through the adsorbent tube filled with a solid adsorbent (Chromosorb). The air samples were analyzed by using a special thermal desorption device and GC/MS determination. The recovery of methyl bromide by air sampling was 88% and the detection limit of the assay was 0.1 pptv based upon assayed air of 10ι. The method was applied to the determination of fumed methyl bromide used for the preservation of papers in a library. The mean concentration of methyl bromide determined in a library was 280.2 $\pm$ 25.4 pptv.

  • Kinetics of reactions of chloride and bromide ions with benzyl chloride and bromide have been investigated in 90% ethanol solution. Semi-quantitative analysis of the results shows that the bond-formation is more important than the bond-breaking and furthermore in bond-formation the energy gain due to bond-formation is less than the increase in electron affinity of the nucleophile.

  • Six year-old female shihtzu was presented as primary epileptic seizure. We had been treated with high dose phenobarbital sodium (6.5 mg/kg), but could not achieved adequate control seizures. In an add-on therapy, the dog was given potassium bromide at a dose of 20 to 40 mg/kg daily for a period of 24 months. This dog has showed a greater than 50% reduction in seizure frequency. The therapeutic range of serum concentration of potassium bromide was from 0.7 to 1.3 mg/ml at 6weeks after treatment. To begin an add-on therapy with potassium bromide it can be recommended at a daily dose of 20 to 40 mg/kg.
