  • One complication related to local anesthesia in the dental clinic is a broken needle. Although rare, a broken needle may be difficult to retrieve. Dental radiographs and 3D CT have been used in the past to confirm the location of a broken needle. We present the case of a broken needle, which was successfully removed using a careful, microscopic approach.

  • Frontier (1976) suggested a criterion based on the expected length of ordered random intervals under the Broken-stick model (Barton and David, 1956) to determine the optimal number of principal components retained. It is considered to be one of the methods that provide the most consistent simulation results (Jackson, 1993). This study is aimed to propose a method using the distribution of ordered random intervals to evaluate the contribution of principal components. We also examine several types of Gini indices along with the corresponding Lorenz curves to visualize the overall equivalence of those contributions.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of cell-wall broken spores of Ganoderma lucidum on the lipid accumulation and body weight reduction in C57BL/6J mice. Six-week-old C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into 5 groups and assigned to one of these groups; normal chew diet(Nor) group, high-fat diet(HFD) group, HFD plus spores of Ganoderma lucidum 800 mg/kg/day (HFD + GS/B) group, HFD plus cell-wall broken spores of Ganoderma lucidum 400 mg/kg/day (HFD + BGS/A) group and finally HFD plus cell-wall broken spores of Ganoderma lucidum 800mg/kg/day (HFD + BGS/B). The experimental groups which were treated oral co-administration with cell-wall broken(or original) spores of Ganoderma lucidum and HFD significantly attenuated accumulative body weight gain, compared with HFD group. Administration of these experimental materials also resulted in significant reduction not only the serum levels of total cholesterol, homocysteine but also the lipid accumulation in liver tissue. But in the almost of results the cell-wall broken spores of Ganoderma lucidum were evaluated superior than the original one. These results indicate that cell-wall broken spores of Ganoderma lucidum may inhibit the lipid accumulation in blood as well as liver tissue. Therefore it may be a valuable candidate for the therapy preventing obese induced hyperlipidemic symptoms.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence of curet fracture and its contributing factors. Material and Methods: Fifty-eight periodontal curets which were broken during periodontal treatment in Kangnung National University Dental Hospital for 1 year were used as study materials. The blade thickness of new curets and broken ones was measured using a digital micrometer. Types of treatment procedures, clinical experience of operators, point of breakage, and method of removal of broken fragments were recorded for each broken curet. Results: The incidence of curet fracture in root planing (16.4 curets per 1,000 procedures) was higher than those in flap surgery (7.5) or supragingival scaling (2.7). No curet was broken during supportive periodontal treatment. The incidence of fracture did not seem to be related with clinical experience of operators. The most frequent breakage point of the curets were upper 1/3 of blades. Fifty-six of 58 broken fragments were removed by non-surgical methods. Two broken tips which could not removed non-surgically were left in the pockets, and proved to be removed spontaneously 1 week later. Conclusion: Root planing showed higher incidence of curet fracture than any other type of periodontal treatment. Most of the fractured fragments were removed by non-surgical method. Further study is needed to develop methods of removal of the fragments which can not be removed non-surgically.

  • Broken rotor bars in induction motors can be detected by monitoring any abnormality of the spectrum amplitudes at certain frequencies in the motor current spectrum. Broken rotor bar fault detection schemes should rely on multiple signatures in order to overcome or reduce the effect of any misinterpretation of the signatures that are obscured by factors such as measurement noises and different load conditions. Multiple Discriminant Analysis (MDA) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) provide appropriate environments to develop such fault detection schemes because of their multi-input processing capabilities. This paper describes two fault detection schemes for broken rotor bar fault detection with multiple signature processing, and demonstrates that multiple signature processing is more efficient than single signature processing.

  • New methodology for mass and energy release assessment in LBLOCA post blowdown is needed and, first of all, the phenomenologically improved and quantitative assessments through experiment are essential. For tile experiment of a hot leg break LBLOCA in post blowdown, the test facility was set and its feature is that tile broken hot leg has two broken sections in the tore side and in the SG side respectively and a separation valve between the two in order to measure the release rate dividedly. Specially it was focused on whether the mass release through the SG side broken section happened or not. The mass release through the core side broken section is dependent on tile safety injection flow and that through the SG side broken section varies depending on several factors. The principal factor is the primary system pressure and the subfactors such as SI flow rate, SI temperature and initial primary pressure, may contribute, too.

  • This paper describes the electrical breakdown characteristics of broken toughened glass stem insulators by comparing with those of sound ones. The broken toughened glass stem insulators were taken from the electric railway field. According to the international standards, the sound and broken toughened glass stem insulators were tested in electrical strength. In the test, the power frequency voltage and the impulse voltage with a standard waveform were applied to the insulators. The power frequency voltage tests were carried out under both dry and wet condition and the impulse voltage tests under only dry condition. The acquired results were compared one another and discussed in electrical breakdown characteristic by analyzing the flashover progress pictures. As a result, the electrical strength of the broken toughened glass insulators was acquired and the processes of the surface breakdown on the toughened glass insulators were confirmed.

  • In this paper, a new approach for detecting broken rotor bars in a squirrel-cage induction motor is proposed. The air-gap flux variation analysis was done using search coils inserted in stator slots when broken rotor bar occurs. An accurate modeling and analysis of air-gap flux variation in the induction motor are developed using finite-element (FE) software packages, and measurement of the flux are made using search coils. The simulation was done for the induction motor with 380 [V], 5 [HP], 4 Poles, 1,742 [rpm] ratings using the commercial FE analysis tool. The simulation and experiment results can be useful for detecting the broken rotor bar of an induction motor.

  • In particle or short-fiber reinforced composites, cracking of the reinforcements is a significant damage mode because the broken reinforcements lose load carrying capacity. This paper deals with elastic stress distributions and load carrying capacity of intact and cracked ellipsoidal inhomogeneities. Three dimensional finite element analysis has been carried out on intact and broken ellipsoidal inhomogeneities in an infinite body under pure shear. For the intact inhomogeneity, as well known as Eshelby(1957) solution, the stress distribution is uniform in the inhomogeneity and non-uniform in the surrounding matrix. On the other hand, for the broken inhomogeneity, the stress in the region near crack surface is considerably released and the stress distribution becomes more complex. The average stress in the inhomogeneity represents its load carrying capacity, and the difference of average stresses between the intact and broken inhomogeneities indicates the loss of load carrying capacity due to cracking damage. The load carrying capacity of the broken inhomogeneity is expressed in terms of the average stress of the intact inhomogeneity and some coefficients. It is found that the broken inhomogeneity with higher aspect ratio still maintains higher load carrying capacity.
