An analytical model about lateral crack occurring in abrasive wear of brittle solids is developed. Stress field around the lateral crack and stress intensity factor at the crack tip are analytically modeled. Abrasive wear by abrasive particle is experimentally studied. In soda-lime glass, it is observed that chipping by lateral crack occurs and produces the greatest material removal when normal load applied by the abrasive particle is about 1.5∼3.0 N. The prediction of lateral crack length from the model is compared with the experimentally measured length in soda-lime glass.
In this article, the dynamic fracture instability characteristics, including dynamic crack propagation and crack branching, in PMMA brittle solids under dynamic loading are investigated using the discrete element method (DEM) simulations. The microscopic parameters in DEM are first calibrated using the comparison with the previous experimental results not only in the field of qualitative analysis, but also in the field of quantitative analysis. The calibrating process illustrates that the selected microscopic parameters in DEM are suitable to effectively and accurately simulate dynamic fracture process in PMMA brittle solids subjected to dynamic loads. The typical dynamic fracture behaviors of solids under dynamic loading are then reproduced by DEM. Compared with the previous experimental and numerical results, the present numerical results are in good agreement with the existing ones not only in the field of qualitative analysis, but also in the field of quantitative analysis. Furthermore, effects of dynamic loading magnitude, offset distance of the initial crack and initial crack length on dynamic fracture behaviors are numerically discussed.

Usually, the failure of quasi-brittle materials is numerically difficult to describe because of the localization process with softening behavior. In this study, ADLE(Axial Deformation Link Elements) with stochastic material properties are developed to simulate the quasi-brittle material failure behavior. The ADLE method is adopted both Fictitious Crack Model and stochastic method to implement the fracture behavior with the localization behavior of quasi-brittle materials. The main objective of this paper is to show the mash independency and the capability of ADLE for the failure behavior of a quasi-brittle materials.

A brittle fracture is one of the source of structural damage and can bring a fatal accident. The inner shell of LNG storage tank should be designed and applied to construction by ensure that no brittle crack will occur under -162℃ condition. In point of view of fracture mechanics brittle fracture in the structure could be referred as crack initiation and crack arrest. It should be designed no crack initiation. However, in the unlikely event of a brittle fracture occurring, a back-up function of arresting the brittle crack should be included for the design. In this paper investigated the characteristics of 9% Ni steel thick plates of having a capability of arresting brittle cracks under the thickness of 33 mm, 37mm, 40 mm. First, charpy test has performed to evaluate the fundamental brittle impact fracture property of 9% Ni steel under the temperature of 24℃, -162℃ and -196℃. In addition, Duplex ESSO tests were also performed under -196℃ to evaluate the capability of crack arrest for 9% Ni steel. From the experiments results, it was confirmed that all the thickness of 9% Ni steel plates exhibits sufficient brittle crack arrest fracture toughness for the application of LNG storage tank as a inner shell.

Recently, there have been the increase of ship size and the development of oil and gas in arctic region. These trends have led to the requirements such as high strength, good toughness at low temperature and good weldability for prevent of brittle fracture at service temperature. There has been the key issue of crack arrestability in large size structure such as container ship. In this report for the first time, crack arrest toughness of thick steel plate welds was evaluated by large scale ESSO test for estimate of brittle crack arrestability in thick steel plate. For large structures using thick steel plates, fracture toughness of welded joint is an important factor to obtain structural integrity. In general, there are two kinds of design concepts based on fracture toughness: crack initiation and crack arrest. So far, when steel structures such as buildings, bridges and ships were manufactured using thick steel plates (max. 80~100mm in thickness), they had to be designed in order to avoid crack initiation, especially in welded joint. However, crack arrest design has been considered as a second line of defense and applied to limited industries like pipelines and nuclear power plants. Although welded joint is the weakest part to brittle fracture, there are few results to investigate crack arrest toughness of welded joint. In this study, brittle crack arrest designs were developed for hatch side coaming of large container ships using arrest weld, hole, and insert technology.

The size of container ships is increasing to increase the cargo loading capacity. However, container ships are limited in terms of the hull longitudinal strength. To overcome this limitation, brittle crack arrest steel can be used. This study was aimed at examining the influence of the heat input on the welding procedures of flux cored arc welding and submerged arc welding. In the experiment, the crack tip opening displacement test, which pertains to a parameter of fracture mechanics, was performed, and a 3-point bending tester was adopted. Based on the results, the crack measurement method was presented, and the stress expansion coefficient value for the pre-fatigue crack length was derived according to the heat input after the pre-cracking length was measured. It was noted that the heat input affected the crack tip opening displacement of brittle crack arrest steel.

Brittle materials such as glasses and ceramics, which are very weak under impact loading, show fragile failure mode due to their low fracture toughness and crack sensitivity. When brittle materials are subjected to impact by small spheres, high contact pressure occurs at the impacted surface causing local damage on the specimen. This damage is a dangerous factor in causing the final fracture of structures. In this research, the crack propagation process of soda-lime glass by the impact of small spheres is explained and the effects of several constraint conditions for impact damage were studied by using soda-lime glass; that is, the effects for the materials and sizes of impact ball, thickness of specimen and residual strength were evaluated. Especially, this research has focused on the damage behavior of ring cracks, cone cracks and several other kinds of cracks.

In recent time there is vigorous requirement for the use of thick steel plate in various industrial fields including shipbuilding industry. Especially, with the continual increases in marine transportation volumes on a global scale, the steel of container ships has become thicker and thicker with the increased size of ships. In addition, the brittle crack arrestability of heavy thick plates was big issue, in recently. In this study, crack arrest test were conducted in order to investigate the crack arrestability of thick plates for shipbuilding steels, where test plate thicknesses were 50mm and 80mm. This paper introduces the brittle crack arrestability of heavy thick plates with thickness effect for shipbuilding.
Applications of fracture mechanics in the strength analysis of ceramic materials have been lately studied by many researchers. Various test specimens have been proposed in order to investigate the fracture resistance of cracked bodies under mixed mode conditions. Double Cleavage Drilled Compression (DCDC) specimen, with a hole offset from the centerline is a configuration that is frequently used in subcritical crack growth studies of ceramics and glasses. This specimen exhibits a strong crack path stability that is due to the strongly negative T-stress term. In this paper the maximum tensile stress (MTS) criterion is employed for investigating theoretically the initiation of brittle fracture in the DCDC specimen under mixed mode conditions. It is shown that the T-stress has a significant influence on the predicted fracture load and the crack initiation angle. The theoretical results suggest that brittle fracture in the DCDC specimen is controlled by a combination of the singular stresses (characterized by KI and KII) and the non-singular stress term, T-stress.

Brittle materials such as ceramics and glasses show fragile fracture due to the low toughness and the crack sensitivity. When brittle materials are subjected to impact loading by small spheres, high contact pressure occurs to the surface of the specimen. Local damage is subsequently generated in the specimen. This local damage is a dangerous factor which gives rise to the final fracture of structures. In this research, impact damage of soda-lime glass plates by small spheres was evaluated by considering the effects of impact directions of indenter, pressure condition of specimen and residual strength after impact loading.
