  • The purpose of this study is to establish the pressure/temperature curves of Reactor Coolant System for brittle fracture prevention. The pressure/temperature curve is the basis to select RC Pump and limits to operate the plant. Based on the plant operation experience, this curve should be re-generated periodically in order to ensure the structural integrity using data from the test of reactor vessel surveilance materials to compensate for the irradiation effects. This study provides the procedure of pressure/temperature curve generation in term of brittle fracture prevention of reactor vessel. Using the UCN 3&4 data, the sample pressure/temperature curve was generated, and it was compared with those of YGN 3&4 based on the stress and $RT_{NDT}$value.

  • Single-shot laser damage of thin Cr films on glass substrates has been studied to understand the cracking and peeling-off mechanism. A numerical model is developed for the calculation of transient heat transfer and thermal stresses in Cr films during excimer laser irradiation and cooling, the transient temperature, and the stress-strain fields are analyzed by using a three-dimensional finite-element model of heat flow. According to the numerical analysis for the experimentally determined cracking and peeling-off conditions, cracking is found to be the result of the tensile brittle fracture due to the excessive thermal stresses formed during the cooling process, while peeling-off is found to be the combined result of films bulging from the softened glass surface at higher temperature and the tensile brittle fracture during the cooling process.

  • In the previous report1), the grinding characteristics of quartz were investigated. In this paper, the grinding mechanisms of brittle materials including ceramics and quartz are modeled and a new parameter SDR(Surface roughness Direction Ratio) is proposed to characterize the grinding mechanisms of such materials. A set of experiments were performed to verify the effectiveness of the suggested parameter. The experimental results indicate that the plastic deformation is the dominant material removal mode at the grinding conditions which show the higher value of SDR. In the case of quartz, the material was removed by brittle fracture in a lower value of SDR and by plastic deformation in a higher value of it. SDR is not affected by wheel mesh size when brittle fracture occured. But in the plastic deformation case, SDR value increases with wheel mesh size.

  • Alumina composite reinforced by chopped alumina fiber was fabricated by filter-pressing the fiber slurry followed by the infiltration of alumina slurry. The chopped fiber was coated with nickel by electroless plating method. The green samples were densified by hot-pressing. Microstructures were studied by SEM and the mechanical properties such as bending strength and fracture toughness were measured. The resulting mechanical properties were analyzed in relation with processing parameters such as preform density and resulting microstructures. The load-displacement curve of the specimen with Ni interlayer but without Ni inclusion showed brittle fracture mode due to the direct contact between matrix and fiber. The load-displacement curve of the specimen with Ni interlayer and Ni inclusion in the matrix which is introduced by high applied pressure during specimen preparation showed non-brittle fracture mode due to the fiber pull-out and dutile phases in the matrix.

  • Single point diamond turning technique for optical crystals is reported in this paper. The main factors influencing the machined surface quality are discovered and regularities of machining process are drawn. Optical crystals have found more and more important applications in the field of modern optics. Optical crystals are mostly brittle materials of poor machinability. The traditional machining method is polishing which has many shortcomings such as low production efficiency, poor ability to be automatically controlled and edge effect of the workpiece. The purpose of our research is to find the optimum machining conditions for ductile cutting of optical crystals and apply the SPDT technique to the manufacturing of ultra precision optical components of brittle material.

  • Recently, atomic force microscope(AFM) with suitable tips is being used for nano fabrication/nanometric machining purposes. In this paper, acoustic emission(AE) was introduced to monitor the nanometric machining of brittle materials(silicon) using AFM. In the experiments, AE responses were sampled, as the tip load was linearly increased(ramped load), to investigate the machining characteristics during a continuous movement. By analyzing the experimental results, it can be concluded that measured AE energy is sensitive to changes in the mechanism of material removal including the ductile-brittle transition during the nanometric machining. The critical depth of cut value for the transition is evaluated and discussed.

  • The paper presents results of FE-calculations on shear localizations in quasi-brittle materials during both an uniaxial plane strain compression and uniaxial plane strain extension. An elasto-plastic model with a linear Drucker-Prager type criterion using isotropic hardening and softening and non-associated flow rule was used. A non-local extension was applied in a softening regime to capture realistically shear localization and to obtain a well-posed boundary value problem. A characteristic length was incorporated via a weighting function. Attention was focused on the effect of mesh size, mesh alignment, non-local parameter and imperfections on the thickness and inclination of shear localization. Different methods to calculate plastic strain rates were carefully discussed.

  • When the weight if a concrete member makes problems, or when the cost of the concrete is relatively high, it may be economical to use a hollow concrete member. But a hollow R.C Pier may have poor ductility because of the brittle failure at the inner face of the hollow R.C Pier. This brittle failure results from the absence of the confinement at the inner face of the hollow R.C Pier. To avoid this brittle failure an internally confined hollow R.C Pier was developed. Test results show that the energy ductility ratio of a internally confined hollow R.C Pier have a superior energy ductility ratio to a general hollow R.C Pier.
