Bridge deflection evaluation using strain and rotation measurements

  • Monitoring systems currently applied to concrete bridges include strain gauges, inclinometers, accelerometers and displacement transducers. In general, vertical displacements are one of the parameters that more often need to be assessed because their information reflects the overall response of the bridge span. However, the implementation of systems to continuously and directly observe vertical displacements is known to be difficult. On the other hand, strain gauges and inclinometers are easier to install, but their measurements provide no more than indirect information regarding the bridge deflection. In this context, taking advantage of the information collected through strain gauges and inclinometers, and the processing capabilities of current computers, a procedure to evaluate bridge girder deflections based on polynomial functions is presented. The procedure has been implemented in an existing software system - MENSUSMONITOR -, improving the flexibility in the data handling and enabling faster data processing by means of real time visualization capabilities. Benefiting from these features, a comprehensive analysis aiming at assessing the suitability of polynomial functions as an approximate solution for deflection curves, is presented. The effect of boundary conditions and the influence of the order of the polynomial functions on the accuracy of results are discussed. Some recommendations for further instrumentation plans are provided based on the results of the present analysis. This work is supported throughout by monitoring data collected from a laboratory beam model and two full-scale bridges.

Bridge Monitoring System based on LoRa Sensor Network (LoRa 센서네트워크 기반의 무선교량유지관리 시스템 구축)

  • The IoT-based sensor network is one of the methods that can be efficiently applied to maintain the facilities, such as bridges, at a low cost. In this study, based on LoRa LPWAN, one of the IoT communications, sensor board for cable tension monitoring, data acquisition board for constructing sensor network along with existing measurement sensors, are developed to create bridge structural health monitoring system. In addition, we designed and manufactured a smart sensor node for LoRa communication and established a sensor network for monitoring. Further, we constructed a test bed at the Yeonggwang Bridge to verify the performance of the system. The test bed verification results suggested that the LoRa LPWAN-based sensor network can be applied as one of the technologies for monitoring the bridge structure soundness; this is excellent in terms of data rate, accuracy, and economy.

Signal Analysis from a Long-Term Bridge Monitoring System in Yongjong Bridge (영종대교 계측시스템의 신호데이터 분석)

  • This paper presents schematically the monitoring system installed in Yongjong Bridge, a self-anchored suspension bridge located in the expressway linking Seoul and Incheon International Airport. Automatic measurement of instrumented civil engineering structures is now widely applied for behavior monitoring during construction in field as well as long-term monitoring for lifetime assessment of bridge structures. A representative example of results that can be acquired through structural health monitoring system is presented by means of data measured during a few years after the opening of the bridge. In order to effectively measure the tension force for hangers that have relatively short length or high tension force, a static tension measurement device has been explored. Newly equipped railway system on the existing bridge results in change of dead load, consequently dynamic characteristics have also been changed. This result can be detected by the monitoring system during and after railway construction.

Using multi-type sensor measurements for damage detection of shear connectors in composite bridges under moving loads

  • This paper proposes using the multi-type sensor vibration measurements, such as from a relative displacement sensors and a traditional accelerometer for the damage detection of shear connectors in composite bridge under moving loads. Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) spectra of these responses will be fused with a data fusion approach i.e., Dempster-Shafer method, to detect the damage of shear connectors. Experimental studies on a composite bridge model in the laboratory are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness and performance of using the proposed approach in detecting the damage of shear connectors in composite bridges. Both undamaged and damaged scenarios are considered. The detection results with the data fusion of multi-type sensor measurements show a more reliable and robust performance and accuracy, avoiding the false identifications.

  • The bridge health monitoring has become an important research topic in conjunction with damage assessment and safety evaluation of structures owing to the improvement of structural modeling techniques incorporating response measurements and the advancements in signal analysis and information processing capabilities. The bridge monitoring systems are generally composed of hardwares such as sensors, data acquisition equipment, data transmission systems, etc, and softwares such as signal processing, damage assessment, display and management, etc. In this paper, the research and development(R&D) activities on the information processing for structural health monitoring of bridges are reviewed. After a brief introduction to the process of bridge health monitoring, various information processing techniques including various signal processing and damage detection algorithms are introduced in detail. Several challenges addressing critical issues in the current bridge health monitoring system and future R&D activities are discussed.

  • A number of efforts had been sought to instrument bridges for the purpose of structural monitoring and assessment. The outcome of these efforts, as gauged by advances in the understanding of the definition of structural damage and their role in sensor selection as well as in the design of cost and data-effective monitoring systems, has itself been difficult to assess. The authors' experience with the design, calibration, and operation of a monitoring system for the Kishwaukee Bridge in Illinois has provided several lessons that bear upon these concerns. The systems have performed well in providing a continuous, low-cost monitoring platform for bridge engineers with immediate relevant information.

  • Recently, the application area of wireless LAN(Internet) and CDMA have been increased, rapidly. Bridge monitoring system using this ubiquitous Computing Technology can bring more convenience of bridge maintenance and management. This paper present a automatic data acquisition, control and processing technology through this concept, and check system applicability to the concrete bridge completed. Finally, The preventive bridge monitoring through the application of this system will progress in technology and make civil infrastructure more safe and useful.

Connection stiffness reduction analysis in steel bridge via deep CNN and modal experimental data

  • This study devises a novel approach, namely quadruple 1D convolutional neural network, for detecting connection stiffness reduction in steel truss bridge structure using experimental and numerical modal data. The method is developed based on expertise in two domains: firstly, in Structural Health Monitoring, the mode shapes and its high-order derivatives, including second, third, and fourth derivatives, are accurate indicators in assessing damages. Secondly, in the Machine Learning literature, the deep convolutional neural networks are able to extract relevant features from input data, then perform classification tasks with high accuracy and reduced time complexity. The efficacy and effectiveness of the present method are supported through an extensive case study with the railway Nam O bridge. It delivers highly accurate results in assessing damage localization and damage severity for single as well as multiple damage scenarios. In addition, the robustness of this method is tested with the presence of white noise reflecting unavoidable uncertainties in signal processing and modeling in reality. The proposed approach is able to provide stable results with data corrupted by noise up to 10%.

  • Many civil and infrastructures continue to be used despite aging and the associated potential for damage accumulation. Therefore, the ability to monitor the health of these systems is becoming increasingly important. The purpose of this paper is to propose a real-time health monitoring system of cable-stayed bridge, based-on non-destructive measurement. And also this paper focuses on the safety assessment for bridge from health monitoring system to accomplish this safety assesment. Using the proposed health monitoring system, it helps bridge maintenance and reduces the economic cost of a life-cycle costs. Also it give important data to develop the design and analysis method for cable-stayed bridges.

  • Scour means the erosion of bed material by flow change when a bridge is constructed in a stream. Scour is one of the critical factors of a bridge failure. There are several methods for the monitoring of scour near bridge foundations; Sounding rods, Magnetic sliding collar System, Sonar system, underwater camera system and so on. In general, Sonar system is preferred due to its convenience and good accuracy. In this study, the new scour monitoring system was developed using profiling sonar sensor. The new system can measure a line profile of a seabed and has small size due to the effectively designed data logger. The performance of the new scour monitoring system was evaluated at a bridge pier in tidal environment. The measured local scour depths were discussed with the result of the empirical formulas; CSU, Froehlich, Laursen and Neill.
