  • The study of thermal effect on the structure is carried out in the case of Guss asphalt which is paved at the temperature of $240^{\circ}C$ or higher in the bridge pavement of the steel deck bridges. However, studies on the heat source data applicable to numerical analysis are insufficient, the temperature load is used as a joint load. In this study, the heat source equations that can be directly loaded on the plate elements, although limited, are presented using the measured temperature data in the Guss asphalt pavement and its validity is confirmed by a brief numerical analysis.

  • A major purpose of this study is to develop a drainage system that can quickly drain water penetrated into pavement layers to mitigate pot holes which is one of the major distress types in bridge deck pavements. This system can be established by applying a thin drainage layer between waterproof and pavement layers. The most important elements for this system are the performance of waterproof layer and construction technique for the thin drainage layer. The porous asphalt mix with the maximum aggregate size of 10mm is first developed based on the porous asphalt mix design guide proposed by NCAT, and various physical and mechanical tests are performed to confirm that the porous mix satisfies all the specification requirements. In addition, a series of laboratory tests including low-temperature bending and bonding strength tests for the MMA(Methyl Methacrylate) type of waterproofing material. It is observed from the tests that the MMA material satisfies all the specification requirements. To evaluate the Reld performance of the drainage system, a field study has been conducted on a relatively small size bridge. The QC/QA tests are conducted on the both waterproofing and pavement materials. It has been found that the drainage system works well to drain the water penetrated into the pavement layers.

  • After the 1990's, Guss asphalt has chosen in Korea for using in pavement of a steel deck bridge because of it's distinguish ability about water proof and so on. But on the other hand it may cause server stress and displacement on the bridge as it is treated using very high temperature ranging from 220℃ to 260℃. Therefore it is critical to estimate the thermal effect of Guss asphalt on the steel deck bridge before the width and pattern of the unit portion are decided to minimize impact. In this study, a serious of numerical tests of the some steel box bridges were idealized were conducted to verify the feasibility of numerical value analysis. The parametric study was performed to present design proposal about the Box section dimensions and the diaphragm spacing.

  • The dense graded asphalt concrete materials have been used for construction of pavement for a long time. The performance of asphalt concrete pavement, however, is influenced by various factors including high temperature and heavy axle loads which cause plastic deformation. The plastic deformation is one of the main functional disadvantages of flexble pavement. In this study, the semi-rigid pavement is considered to solve the problem. A set of experimental evaluation on semi-rigid pavement material has been coducted in laboratory to obtain it's physical properties and serviceabilities. The results of tests, including compressive strength, flexural strength, ravelling and wheel tracking, show that the semi-rigid pavement has a good mechanical properties and serviceabilities. Consequently, the semi-rigid pavement may be suitable to bridge deck, tunnel, slow lane and parking area pavements.

  • This study experimented to evaluate the environment friendly high performance ternary cement concrete deck overlay pavement using mineral admixture such as fly ash and ground granulated blast-furnace slag. It was measured to find best binder mixing according to replacement rate of mineral admixture with compressive strength and flexural strength. After finding best binder, it is also experimented to evaluate durability on chloride penetration resistance, freezing- thawing resistance, scaling resistance of deicing chemicals, abrasion resistance, alkali-silica reactivity test and bonded environment friendly high performance ternary cement concrete deck overlay pavement experimented to evaluate bonded old deck and new concrete overlay pavement using special polymer cement mortar. In additions, bonded environment friendly high performance ternary cement concrete deck overlay pavement by experimental construction was evaluated at interchange bridge of North Yeoju. Result, examination was indicated better binding with binder replacement of cement 70%, ground granulated blast-furnace slag 15% and fly ash 15%. And special polymer cement mortar used in old deck and new overlay concrete was indicated better bonding both laboratory and construction.

  • Longitudinal cracks due to traffic truck loadings that are caused by local deformations of steel orthotropic bridge decks are sometimes observed in the wearing surface. So, underlying causes of the longitudinal pavement crack induced by structural behaviors of steel decks are investigated in this study. For this purpose, The rational finite element model of the steel deck and the pavement having the box girder is developed and a parametric study is performed by varying thickness or elastic modulus ratios of both the steel deck plate and the pavement. As a result, a large tensile strain above the webs of the u-rib and the box girder, which becomes the main cause of the cracks of the pavement, is detected from variation of the normal strain component of the wearing surface in the transverse direction.

  • A method for repairing cracks using low-viscosity resins has been proposed as a construction method that can quickly repair roads from deterioration. However, when the viscosity of the epoxy resin is high, there is a limit in that it is difficult for the material to penetrate into microcracks and cracks in the concrete top plate. In this study, an epoxy thin-layer pavement repair method was developed using low-viscosity PMMA (Poly methyl methacrylate) to repair microcracks on the pavement surface and pavement layer and reinforce the pavement surface. Materials necessary for the thin-layer packaging method were developed, and performance was evaluated to meet the epoxy binder quality standards. As a result, all materials met the required performance.

  • RS-LMC (Rapid Setting Latex Modified Concrete) has been widely used as repair material for bridge deck overlay or rehabilitation, because the overlaid pavement could be opened to the traffic after 3 hours of curing. Although the field performance of RS-LMC generally indicates that it has an excellent bonding to the substrate and shows a long term performance, the crack by vibration of vehicles have been happened on the overlay of bridges in technical reports. In this study, experimental research was carried out to evaluate the vibration properties of RS-LMC overlays by using P.S.T (Pavement Shaking Table). Total 12 specimens were tested and the variables are Latex-cement ratio (L/C) and amplitude of vibration. The result shows that the number of cracks and the total length of cracks are reduced as the increase of Latex-cement ratio (L/C) until 15%. And the crack occurs at a very small strain than the proposed values by Walter, D, G and design codes.

  • The impact factor of bridges is analyzed based on experimental data to examine the characteristics of the dynamic responses of bridges. The experimental impact factors are compared with the impact factor of Korean Highway Design Specification and Japan T-load in terms of the span length. According to the superstructural types of bridges, the variation of the impact factor is analyzed. When vehicles are passing on a bridge, the dynamic effect acts on the bridge impact factor more than at the time of design because of the velocity of vehicles, the surface roughness reduction due to the deterioration of the bridge deck pavement, and the disconnection of the bridge entrance and the expansion joint. Because the actual value is greater than the expected value at the time of design, the dynamic response of the bridge accelerates the deterioration of the bridge due to the accumulation of fatigue, and the bridge's life-time is shortened and can have an influence on the serviceability and safety of the bridge.
