T형 교각의 겹침이음을 고려한 콘크리트 교량의 지진취약도 분석 (Seismic Fragility Analysis of Concrete Bridges Considering the Lap Splices of T-type Column)

  • 교량은 지진에 의해 붕괴가 일어나면 많은 수의 인명피해와 재산피해가 발생할 수 있어 정확한 지진거동 예측과 대비가 필요하다. 특히, 교각은 교량의 지진거동에 있어서 지배적인 역할을 한다. 또한, 교각의 겹침이음 길이 부족과 같은 설계적인 문제가 있다면 지진에 대한 위험성이 더욱 증대하게 된다. 본 연구에서는 교각에서 겹침이음 특성을 분석하기 위해, 겹침이음 길이가 부족한 교각의 수치해석 모델을 정의하고 실험데이터를 통해 검증하였다. 제시된 교각 모델을 일반적으로 사용되는 RC 슬래브 교량에 적용하였다. 교각의 비선형 정적해석을 수행하여 겹침이음에 따른 성능점 변화를 평가하였다. 또한, 지진취약도 곡선을 산정하여 교각의 겹침이음 길이에 따른 지진취약도 비교분석을 수행하였다.

Application of power spectral density function for damage diagnosis of bridge piers

  • During the last two decades, much joint research regarding vibration based methods has been done, leading to developing various algorithms and techniques. These algorithms and techniques can be divided into modal methods and signal methods. Although modal methods have been widely used for health monitoring and damage detection, signal methods due to higher efficiency have received considerable attention in various fields, including aerospace, mechanical and civil engineering. Signal-based methods are derived directly from the recorded responses through signal processing algorithms to detect damage. According to different signal processing techniques, signal-based methods can be divided into three categories including time domain methods, frequency domain methods, and time-frequency domain methods. The frequency domain methods are well-known and interest in using them has increased in recent years. To determine dynamic behaviours, to identify systems and to detect damages of bridges, different methods and algorithms have been proposed by researchers. In this study, a new algorithm to detect seismic damage in the bridge's piers is suggested. To evaluate the algorithm, an analytical model of a bridge with simple spans is used. Based on the algorithm, before and after damage, the bridge is excited by a sine force, and the piers' responses are measured. The dynamic specifications of the bridge are extracted by Power Spectral Density function. In addition, the Least Square Method is used to detect damage in the bridge's piers. The results indicate that the proposed algorithm can identify the seismic damage effectively. The algorithm is output-only method and measuring the excitation force is not needed. Moreover, the proposed approach does not need numerical models.

차량의 충돌을 고려한 지하차도 기둥의 손상 평가 (Damage Evaluation for the Column of Underpass Considering the Collision of a Vehicle)

  • 교량의 교각 설계시에는 설계기준에 의거하여 차량의 충돌에 대비한 적절한 방호시설 등이 고려되고 있으나, 지하차도의 기둥 설계시에는 차량의 충돌과 관련된 규정이 없다. 또한 지하차도의 기둥은 상대적으로 폭이나 두께가 작아서 차량의 충돌에 의하여 큰 손상이 발생할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 지하차도 기둥에 대한 충돌해석을 통하여 차량의 충돌에 의한 구조물의 손상을 평가하였다. 충돌해석에서는 지하차도 기둥의 물성과 형태 그리고 차량의 속도와 종류 등이 매개변수로 고려되었다. 수치해석 결과 지하차도 기둥이 심하게 손상되는 경우가 있었으며 따라서 지하차도의 기둥 설계시에는 차량 충돌에 대한 적절한 고려가 필요하다.

Experimental study on ductile crack initiation in compact section steel columns

  • In order to develop a verification method for extremely low cycle fatigue (ELCF) of steel structures, the initiation mechanism of ductile cracks is investigated in the present study, which is the first step of brittle fracture, occurred in steel bridge piers with thick-walled sections. For this purpose, a total of six steel columns with small width-thickness ratios were tested under cyclic loading. It is found that ductile cracks occurred at the column base in all the specimens regardless of cyclic loading histories subjected. Moreover, strain history near the crack initiation location is illustrated and an index of energy dissipation amount is proposed to evaluate deformation capacity of structures.

  • The behavior of bridge column under multi-directional loading as well as uni-directional loading need to be studied because bridge columns will be subjected to the multi-directional cyclic loading during a strong earthquake. To evaluate the capacity of columns, uni-axial cyclic loading tests and bi-axial alternate cyclic loading tests were carried out. The number of cycles of alternate bi-axial loading were determined considering the ratio of natural frequencies in two orthogonal directions. From the test results, strength degradation and ductility reduction were observed in biaxial loading conditions. Their rates were found to be more rapid in the loading pattern that was determined considering the different natural frequencies.

  • The current seismic design criteria of the Korea Design Specifications for Highway Bridge (KDSHB 2000) adopted the seismic design concept and requirements of the AASHTO specifications. In order to obtain full ductile behavior under seismic loads, i.e. when applied seismic force is larger than design flexural strength of column section, a response modification factor is used. For the moderate seismicity regions, a design based on required ductility and required transverse reinforcement might be a reasonable approach. Ductility demand design or performance based design might be an appropriate approach especially for regions of moderate seismic risk. The procedure and application of this design approach are presented in this paper.

서해대교 PSM교 교각의 내진성능 (Seismic performance of Piers in Seohae Grand Bridge)

  • 서해대교는 국내에 교량구조물에 관한 내진설계가 도입되기 전 설계된 교량으로서 현재 내진설계 규준에 적합하지 않은 종방향철근 및 횡방향 철근이 겹침이음된 중공육각형 단면의 철근콘크리트 기둥으로 이미 시공이 완료된 상태이다. 최근, 지진에 대한 사회적 관심이 대두됨으로서 내진 설계 규준에 적합하지 않은 철근상세를 가지 서해대교 PSM교 교각의 내진성능이 의문시되었다. 따라서, 비내진 철근상세를 가진 서해대교 PSM교 교각의내진성능 평가를 위하여 교각의 축소모형 실험을 수행하였으며, 실험결과 종방향철근 겹침이음이 교각의 전체적인 내진거동에는 큰 영향을 미치지 않으며 기대 이상의 연성을 발휘할 수 있는 것으로 나타났다. 본 논문에서는 축소모형 실험결과에 의한 시험체의 파괴양상, 유효강성, 연성, 응답수 정계수 및 등가점성감쇠비를 분석하였으며, 아울러 가속도변위 응답스펙트럼을 이용하여 서해대교 PSM교 교각의 내진성능을 평가하였다.

Effects of Pounding at Expansion Joints of Concrete Bridges

  • This paper presents the results of a study on the effects of pounding at expansion joints of concrete bridges under earthquake ground motions. An engineering approach, rather than continuum mechanics, is emphasized. First, the sensitivity analysis of the gap element stiffness is performed. Second, usefulness of the analysis method for simulation of pounding phenomena is demonstrated. Third, the effects of pounding on the ductility demands measured in terms of the rotation of column ends are investigated. Two-dimensional FE analysis using a bilinear hysterestic model for bridge substructure joints and a nonlinear gap element for the expansion joint is performed on a realistic bridge with an expansion joint. Effects of the primary factors on the ductility demand such as gap sizes and characteristics of earthquake ground motion are investigated through a parametric study. The major conclusions are that pounding effect is generally negligible on the ductility demand for wide practical ranges of gap size and peak ground acceleration, but is potentially significant at the locations of impact.

  • For structural engineers, design of pile cap causes difficulties since design of this member is not specifically addressed by codes. In general, pile cap is considered as deep beam and designed for shear and moment at specified critical section. This is called as traditional section method. However, many international design codes suggest the application of strut tie method for better design of this member. In this paper, a brief application of strut tie method to the design check of pile cap structure designed by section method is presented. Unlike well known pile cap with single column, the example pile cap has two columns. In order to find out proper load path under various load condition, three dimensional finite element method was carried out. The result indicates that provided reinforcement by traditional section method has sufficient capacity to meet the design requirements.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the damage of the reinforced concrete bridge piers. For the purpose of this research, twelve reinforced concrete specimens were fabricated and experimented with quasi-static test method. The selected test parameters are lap splice, axial load ratio, confinement steel ratio and number of loading cycle. The method of evaluate of damage index is the model proposed by Park and Ang. In accordance with this research, the most effective test parameter is lap splice of longitudinal steel. Therefore, the retrofit scheme of reinforced concrete bridge piers with lap splice of longitudinal steel, which was constructed before 1992, must be settled without delay. Otherwise, the effect of axial force is trivial. The more confinement steel is less damage index and more loading cycle lead to raise damage. The damage statement proposed Park and Ang is the same with experimental results.
