The goal of this study is to show the way to increase the safety of deteriorated PSC beam bridges by the to-box reinforcing method. This method is to change the open girder section into the closed box section by connecting bottom flanges of neighboring PSC girders with the precast panels embedding PS tendons at the anchor block. The box section is composed of three concrete members with different casting ages, RC slab, PSC beam, precast panel. This different aging requires a time-dependent analysis considering construction sequences. Reliability index and failure probability are produced by the AFOSM reliability analysis. Transversely five schemes and longitudinally two schemes are considered. The full reinforcing scheme, transversely and longitudinally, shows the highest reliability index, but it requires more cost for retrofit. The partial reinforcing scheme 4, 4-1 are recommended in this study as the economically best scheme.
In the past few years, the nondestructive inspection technology has greatly developed due to the increased necessity to gain a complete understanding of the bridge behavior. Especially, the deformations of bridges contain a lot of informations about its health state. By measuring these deformations it is possible to analyze the loading and aging behavior of the structure. However, the current methods (such as LVDT, dial gage, optical displacement tranceducer, etc) are often of changeable application on site and have the limitations of installation. In this paper, the classical beam theory was reviewed and the deflections of structure are estimated using measured strain which is easy to acquire. The applicability of this algorithm is verified by a preliminary steel beam test and two types of concrete beam tests. Also fiber optic sensors as well as resistive strain gages were installed in the concrete beams to establish the applicability of fiber optic sensors in the field of civil engineering.
Large turbine generator(rated 22kV) has failed in the stator winding area during normal operation. The capacitance and tan${\delta}$ were measured by Schering bridge in the zone 1, 2 and zone 3-6 stator windings. The capacitance and tan${\delta}$ in the zone 1, 2 of stator winding were higher than those of zone 3-6 in the stator winding. Experiments on microstructure property were conducted in the zone 1, 2 and zone 3-6 insulations, which were drawn out from stator windings of the large turbine generator. Microstructure analysis was characterized using scanning electron microscope(SEM). SEM results indicated that several isolated delaminations occurred at the interface of mica/epoxy insulations. Both thermal and mechanical aging cause the delamination.
The emerging sensor-based structural health monitoring (SHM) technology has a potential for cost-effective maintenance of aging civil infrastructure systems. The author proposes to integrate continuous and global monitoring using on-structure sensors with targeted local non-destructive evaluation (NDE). Significant technical challenges arise, however, from the lack of cost-effective sensors for monitoring spatially large structures, as well as reliable methods for interpreting sensor data into structural health conditions. This paper reviews recent efforts and advances made in addressing these challenges, with example sensor hardware and health monitoring software developed in the author's research center. The hardware includes a novel fiber optic accelerometer, a vision-based displacement sensor, a distributed strain sensor, and a microwave imaging NDE device. The health monitoring software includes a number of system identification methods such as the neural networks, extended Kalman filter, and nonlinear damping identificaiton based on structural dynamic response measurement. These methods have been experimentally validated through seismic shaking table tests of a realistic bridge model and tested in a number of instrumented bridges and buildings.
Emerging sensor-based structural health monitoring (SHM) technology can play an important role in inspecting and securing the safety of aging civil infrastructure, a worldwide problem. However, implementation of SHM in civil infrastructure faces a significant challenge due to the lack of suitable sensors and reliable methods for interpreting sensor data. This paper reviews recent efforts and advances made in addressing this challenge, with example sensor hardware and software developed in the author's research center. It is proposed to integrate real-time continuous monitoring using on structure sensors for global structural integrity evaluation with targeted NDE inspection for local damage assessment.
