Effects of Thorax Mobility Exercise on the Thorax Mobility, Breathing Pattern and Respiratory Capacity in Subject With Restricted Thorax Mobility: A Case Series (가슴 가동성 제한을 가지고 있는 대상자에게 가슴 가동성 운동이 가슴가동성, 호흡패턴 및 호흡량에 미치는 효과: 사례 시리즈)

  • Objective : To investigate the effects of thorax mobility exercises on thorax mobility, breathing pattern, and respiratory capacity in subjects with restricted thorax mobility. Methods : Thirteen subjects with restricted thorax mobility participated in this study. Measurement of thorax circumference using a tape measure (difference between inhalation and exhalation), breathing pattern (distance of rib cage elevation during breathing), and respiratory capacity was performed. Paired t-test was used to compare the thorax mobility, breathing pattern, and respiratory capacity between before and after thorax mobility excercise. Statiscal significance was set at .05. Results : There were significant differences in thorax mobility and breathing pattern, but no significant difference in respiratory capacity (p < .05). Conclusion : Based on the results of this study, thorax mobility exercise using the rib mobilization technique is considered to be a method that can improve thorax mobility and normalize abnormal breathing patterns that cause rib cage elevation.

The Effects of Abdominal Breathing on the Preoperative Anxiety and Blood Pressure of Upper and Lower Limbs Surgical Patients (복식호흡이 상.하지 수술 환자의 수술 전 불안과 혈압에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study were to examine the effects of abdominal breathing on preoperative anxiety and blood pressure. Methods: The research was a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The subjects were 60 patients that operated on under local anesthetic. Thirty subjects in the experimental group and 30 subjects in the control group. Data on anxiety and blood pressure for this study were collected from them. The collected data were analyzed by t-test, $X^2$-test, paird t-test. Results: After abdominal breathing, there was a statistically significant decline in the psychological anxiety level of the experimental group. With regard to the physical anxiety level, no statistically significant drop was detected in blood pressure. Conclusion: The findings of the study confirmed that abdominal breathing reduced preoperative anxiety of upper and lower limbs surgical patients.

  • This paper describes the new modal analysis method to detect the presence of the breathing crack in a general rotor system with disk asymmetry and stator anisotropy. It is proposed that the modal analysis using directional frequency response functions (dFRFs), which, accounting for the directivity in modes, clears the heavily over-lapping of other harmonics occurring from non-isotropic properties in addition to those due to crack, can provide an effective method to detect the modes by a crack. The simulations from the simple general rotor model show that the r-dFRFs (reverse dFRFs) for asymmetry confirms a good indicator of the presence of the breathing crack and the instability is primarily influenced by the shaft asymmetry than the breathing crack.

  • Objectives : Insomnia, depression and anxiety disorder are widespread in elderly patients. Mood disorder and insomnia share complex theoretical and clinical relationships. We investigated if traditional Korean medical treatment and breathing meditation are effective in patient with insomnia, depression and anxiety disorder. Methods : We treated one patient with traditional Korean medical treatment such as accupuncture, herb-medication, moxa and breathing meditation Results : After Treatment, the chief complaint and accompanying symptoms were improved, and the score of BAI, SADS, BDI, PSQI, IQ were decresed. Conclusions : According to this study traditional Korean medical treatment is effective for the cure of insomnia, depression and anxiety disorder and breathing meditation forifies the traditional Korean medical treatment.

  • Air-breathing polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) are highly promising particularly for small-power applications up to tens watts class. A distinctive feature of the air-breathing PEMFC is its simple system configuration in which axial fans operate for dual purposes, supplying both oxidant and coolant in a single manner. In the present study, a nominal SOW air-breathing PEMFC system is developed and investigated to determine the optimal operating strategy through parametric studies (i.e., reactant humidity, and fan-blowing flow rate). The cell voltage distributions are examined as a function of time to evaluate the system performance under various operating conditions.

The Effect of a Breathing Exercise Intervention on Pulmonary Function after Lung Lobectomy (폐절제술을 받은 환자의 호흡운동중재가 폐기능에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a breathing exercise intervention by measuring pulmonary function test (PFT) three times; preoperative, 3rd and 5th day after operation. Methods: This study was designed as a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. A total of 55 patients with lung cancer were recruited from a Chonnam university hospital in Hawsun-gun, Korea from January to December 2008. Results: 'Forced Vital Capacity (FVC)' and 'Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second $(FEV_1)$' were significantly improved in the experimental group than those in the control group (p<.05). Conclusion: Breathing exercise intervention was found to be effective in improving pulmonary function among lung cancer patients underwent lung lobectomy. Thus, the breathing exercise can be applied in hospitals and communities for patients with lung cancer as one of the nursing intervention modalities for their better postoperative rehabilitation.

  • All singers can often develop voice trouble secondary to vocal abuse and overuse, but it is well known that traditional Korean singer (pansori) develop voice disorders more frequently than western style sunger. While laryngological concern for voice disorders arising in professional singers has received some attention, empirically motivated investigations of the underlying acoustic features of the singing voice have been relatively limited. Since all singers have a good knowledge of the voice and voice training, they would hardly give consent for treatment to a doctor unless he understood their desire to maximize their voice quality. The components of this report are composed of breathing, basic ekement, and vocalization, essencial fact, for getting a perfect voice for pansori. The breathing is based on hypogastric breathing. The main functions of breathing are energy and power of utterence, tempo of rhythm and seperating paragraph and controlling feelings according to dramatic situation. Vocalization is based on general vocalization. Main uses of it are maintaining singer's tone and harmony of cosmetic dual force.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was carried out to review for the importance of breathing pattern training for the spinal stabilization. Methods : This is a literature study with books and thesis. Results : Breathing with normal respiratory mechanics has a potent role in neuro-musculo-skeletal system. The evaluation of respiratory mechanics should be a routine part of every physical examination. And respiratory mechanics must be intact for both normal posture and spinal stabilization to be possible. Conclusion : The spinal stabilization exercise with the breathing pattern training is more efficient therapeutic exercise program for the patient with neuro-musculo-skeletal system disorder.

A Study on EMG Activation Changes of Spinal Stability Muscles during Forced Respiratory Maneuvers

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether changes in electromyography (EMG) activations of spinal stability muscles with respiratory demand change were due to changes in respiratory demand or in postural demand. Methods: Forty healthy subjects (19male, 21female, $20.8{\pm}1.9$years old) performed quiet breathing and four different forced respiratory maneuvers (FRM) (Pulsed Lip Breathing, Diaphragmatic Breathing, Combination breathing, and respiratory muscle endurance training breathing) while in sitting and standing positions. EMG data for four muscles (TrA/IO, EO, RA, and ES) were collected and filtered using a band pass filter (20~200Hz) and a notch filter (60, 120, 180Hz). Results: There were no significant differences on percentage of change on %MVIC between QB and FRM (PLB, CB, DB, and RMET) between positions (all p>0.05).
