Design of a Miniaturized 5.3 GHz 360° Analog Phase Shifter (소형화된 5.3 GHz 대역 360° 아날로그 위상천이기 설계)

  • In this paper, a design and fabrication of miniaturized 5.3 GHz reflection type $360^{\circ}$ analog phase shifter with branch line coupler and $360^{\circ}$ variable reactance load. In order to miniaturize phase shifter, novel branch line coupler is proposed. The novel branch line coupler is miniaturized using transformation of transmission line to T and ${\pi}$ type equivalent circuit. The miniaturized branch line coupler has small size of above 50 % compared with conventional branch line coupler. For wide phase shift range, $360^{\circ}$ variable reactance load structure is adopted. Especially, the structure was improved for linear phase shift by adding transmission line which acts as an impedance transformer. The improved structure was miniaturized using the equivalent lumped-element of transmission line. The fabricated phase shifter with $15{\times}15mm^2$ shows wide phase shift of above $480^{\circ}$, the insertion loss of -4~-6 dB and the reflection loss of below -20 dB at 5.3 GHz under 0~10 V control voltage range.

Dual-Band Branch-Line Coupler Using Shorted Stubs (단락 스터브를 이용한 이중대역용 브랜치 라인 커플러의 설계)

  • This letter presents a shorted-stub tapped branch-line coupler for dual-band applications. In the new design, a shorted stub is used to realize 90 phase change at two frequencies. Closed-form design equations are derived to find the characteristic impedance and electrical length of the proposed branch lines using the ABCD-matrix. To verify the design concept, a microstrip coupler operating at 0.8 and 1.85 GHz is fabricated and measured.

  • A broad-band 3-dB directional coupler is implemented by using cascaded exponential transmission line as branch lines. Compared with that of the uniform transmission line, the bandwidth of the proposed 3-dB branch-line directional cpoupler increases 2.96 times.

  • In this paper, the six-port phase correlator using $90^{\circ}$ hybrid branch-line coupler and three-arm branch $90^{\circ}$ hybrid coupler were designed. The performances for two six-port phase correlators were analyzed by using ADS2003A tool. Three-arm six-port phase collerator provides more wide dynamic frequency range than that of six-port using the conventional hybrid coupler in range of circa five times. Six-port phase correlators were fabricated to evaluate the performance of two six-port phase correlators. The measured performances for two six-port phase correlators show the good accordance with the simulation data.

Analysis and Design of Branch Line Coupler using Microstrip Lines with Overlay (덮개층이 있는 마이크로스트립 선로를 이용한 브랜치 선로 결합기 해석 및 설계)

  • A method of miniaturizing branch line coupler is presented. The method utilizes the microstrip line with overlay(or superstrate). The frequency dependent characteristics, dispersion and characteristic impedance, of this line are obtained by Immitance method in spectral domain and Method of Line. The relevant spectral domain Green's function is given and used to obtain numerical results. The branch line couplers with overlays are designed and fabricated at 2 GHz. The experimental results show that the size of coupler with overlay(${epsilon}_r$=10.2) is 31.4 precent smaller than conventional coupler. This minimized coupler is suitable for Butler Matrix as feeder for mobile communication beam forming antenna.

  • We report the 94 GHz CPW branch-line bandpass filter for planar integrated millimeter-wave circuits. The branch-line coupler operates as a transversal filtering section by connecting the coupling ports to the open load stubs and taking the isolation port as the output node. For design of the 94 GHz branch-line bandpass filter, we built the CPW library and optimized the characteristic impedances and the lengths of the branch-line coupler and the open load stubs. The fabricated 94 GHz bandpass filter exhibits an insertion loss of 2.5 dB with an 11.7 % 3 dB relative bandwidth and the return loss is -18.5 dB at a center frequency of 94 GHz.

  • In this paper, we introduce the advanced compact transmission line with periodic stepped stubs. They are more effective than normal stubs in ATL. The short stepped stubs loading of transmission line work as effective shunt capacitance and that was proved by equivalent circuit based on transmission line theory and quasi-static analysis. And the compact branch-line coupler and the compact rat-race coupler via proposed compact microstrip line were designed at 1.8 ㎓. They have 677 ㎟ and 913 ㎟, respectively, and they are 62% and 45% of normal design.

  • A new microwave transmission line frequency discriminator in MIC is described, which is composed of a branch-line hybrid 3dB coupler, a λ/2-short stub and a λ/4-opcn stub. It is experimentally verified that the discriminator is linear in a 400 MHz bandwidth at center frequency 4.94 GHz and has return loss more than 15dB in that range.

A Low-loss Phase Shifter with Harmonics Suppression Using Compact Hybrid Coupler (소형 하이브리드 커플러를 이용한 고조파가 억압된 저손실 위상 변위기)

  • In this paper, a compact low-loss reflector-type phase shifter with harmonic suppression using meander T-shaped branch-line coupler is suggested. The compact coupler for the phase shifter has a size of $22.2{\times}14.9mm^2$ while a conventional branch coupler has a size of $32.6{\times}27.8mm^2$. The phase shifter shows insertion losses of 0.19-0.28 dB at the center frequency of 2.1 GHz, and a measured maximum phase shift of $137^{\circ}$.

  • This paper presents the modified design that can reject the harmonic signals in the branch-line coupler. After adding open stubs at the center of quarter-wavelength lines of the traditional design, all network parameters can be determined by network equivalence, in order to maintain the conventional function at the operating frequency and suppress its harmonic terms to de chosen. Experimental results show the second and third harmonic suppressions to be -37.5 and -42.7dBs, while maintaining conventional performance at the fundamental frequency.
