  • In this work, we investigated kaolinite raw materials from China, Vietnam, and Seongju (Korea) used for the manufacture of porcelain products in Korea. According to chemical analysis results, for the kaolinites from Seongju, more feldspar components containing CaO, K2O, and Na2O are found than in those from China or Vietnam, of which the composition is close to that of pure kaolinite. Through X-ray Rietveld quantitative analysis, kaolinite and muscovite are found to be the main phases for all the raw materials. Halloysite, quartz, gibbsite, and andesine are found at more than 5% for KM-85 (China), LKC-60 (Vietnam), KC-009 (China), and WA (Seongju). Absorption rate is on order of LKC-60 < KC-009 < KM-85 < PA < WA, and the sample, sintered in reductive atmosphere, exhibits the lowest absorption rate. Comparing the color of the sintered samples, kaolinites of KM-85, LKC-60, and KC-009 (L*: 94 - 97%) show higher whiteness value than those of WA and PA (L*: 82 - 91%).

  • We consider a generalized problem of the continuous multiple choice knapsack problem and study on the LP relaxation of the candidate problems which are generated in the branch and bound algorithm for solving the generalized problem. The LP relaxed candidate problem is called the generalized continuous multiple choice linear knapsack problem and characterized by some variables which are partitioned into continuous multiple choice constraints and the others which only belong to simple upper bound constraints. An efficient algorithm of order O($n^2logn$) is developed by exploiting some structural properties and applying binary search to ordered solution sets, where n is the total number of variables. A numerical example is presented.

  • Fecal examination for survey of natural prevalence of Balantidium coli was performed on 1080 healthy bred pigs in Korea, and the positive rate was 56.2%. In order to observe if Balantidium coli might be a secondary invader after certain initiation of the intestinal lesions, the piglet groups preinfected with the protozoa experimentally were treated with Salmonella cholerasuis, Trichuris. cold stress, HCI, and immunosuppressive drug respectively, but no relation was found between them. Also the protozoa were not detected from the intestinal lesions spontaneously formed of 107 pigs which were checked in the slaughter house. According to the above results, Balantidium coli is not directly associated with the formation of any lesions in the pig's large intestine.

  • From Nov. 1987 to Aug. 1989, 12 patients with coronary occlusive disease underwent coronary bypass surgery at the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Catholic University Medical College. The results were as follows: 1. There were 9 males and 3 females ranged in age from 25 to 69 years with a mean of 50.4 years. 2. The prevalent locations of coronary artery stenosis were left anterior descending branch [9 cases], right coronary artery[4 cases], first diagonal branch[3 cases], left circumflex artery [2 cases] in order of frequency. 3, Among 12 cases, 5 cases had an episode of previous myocardial infarction respectively. 4. We performed triple bypass operation in 3 cases, double bypass in 2 cases and single bypass in 7 cases using great saphenous vein. 5. Postoperative complications were cerebral embolism[1, died], pleural effusion[1], temporary cardiac arrest[1], supraventricular tachycardia[1] and late gastric ulcer bleeding[1]. 6. The follow up periods were ranged from 8 months to 30 months and all survivors were on antiplatelet medication showing free of angina.

  • This paper deals with the problem of the optimal location of warehouses in the two stage distribution system, i.e., the distribution system where the product is transported from plants to customer areas via warehouses. The Problem is formulated with a zero-one mixed integer programming and an efficient branch and bound algorithm is then used to solve the problem. In order to obtain the solution of this problem, this paper shows the procedure of conversion of two stage distribution system into one stage distribution system. An improved method of solving the linear programming at the nodes and branching decision rule is also showed by this study.

  • This paper considers a scheduling problem to minimize the sum of the associated scheduling (production/delivery times) cost and the delivery cost for an integrated system of a single production machine and various transportation vehicles with transportation mode selection allowed. Each transportation mode is provided with a fixed number of vehicles at the associated delivery time and cost. The proposed problem is characterized as being NP-hard. Some solution properties are also characterized. Therewith, three heuristic algorithms (called SPT-based, LWF-based and WSPT-based heuristic) and a branch-and-bound algorithm are derived. In order to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithms, computational experiments are made with some numerical instances.

  • If for every elements x and y of an associative algebraic structure (S, ${\cdot}$) there exists a positive integer r such that $ab=b^ra$, then S is called quasi-commutative. Evidently, every abelian group or commutative semigroup is quasi-commutative. Also every finite Hamiltonian group that may be considered as a semigroup, is quasi-commutative however, there are quasi-commutative semigroups which are non-group and non commutative. In this paper, we provide three finitely presented non-commutative semigroups which are quasi-commutative. These are the first given concrete examples of finite semigroups of this type.

  • This paper deals with a novel shunt circuit, which is capable of suppressing multimode vibration amplitudes by using a pair of piezoceramic patches. In order to describe the characteristic behaviors of a piezoelectric damper connected with a series and a parallel resistor-negative capacitor branch circuit, the stiffness ratio and loss factor with respect to the non-dimensional frequency are considered. The mechanism of the shunt damper is also described by considering a shunt voltage constrained by shunt impedance. To obtain a guideline model of the piezo/beam system with a negative capacitive shunting, the governing equations of motion are derived through the Hamilton's principle and a piezo sensor equation as well as a shunt-damping matrix is developed. The theoretical analysis shows that the piezo/beam system combined with a series and a parallel resistor-negative capacitor branch circuit developed in this study can significantly reduce the multiple-mode vibration amplitudes over the whole structural frequency range.

  • As concrete is most usable material in construction industry it's been required to improve its quality. Nowadays, nanotechnology offers the possibility of great advances in construction. For the first time, the nonlinear buckling of straight concrete columns armed with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) resting on foundation is investigated in the present study. The column is modelled with Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam theories. The characteristics of the equivalent composite being determined using mixture rule. The foundation around the column is simulated with spring and shear layer. Employing nonlinear strains-displacements, energy methods and Hamilton's principal, the governing equations are derived. Differential quadrature method (DQM) is used in order to obtain the buckling load of structure. The influences of volume percent of SWCNTs, geometrical parameters, elastic foundation and boundary conditions on the buckling of column are investigated. Numerical results indicate that reinforcing the concrete column with SWCNTs, the structure becomes stiffer and the buckling load increases with respect to concrete column armed with steel.

  • This paper deals with the free vibration analysis of a dynamical coupled system: flexible gravity dam- compressible rectangular reservoir. The finite element method is used to compute the natural frequencies and modal shapes of the system. Firstly, the reservoir and subsequently the dam is modeled by classical 8-node elements and the natural frequencies plus modal shapes are calculated. Afterwards, a new 21-node element is introduced and the same procedure is conducted in which an efficient method is employed to carry out the integration operations. Finally, the coupled dam-reservoir system is modeled by solely one 21-node element and the free vibration of dam-reservoir interaction system is investigated. As an important result, it is clearly concluded that the one high-order element treats more precisely than the eight-node elements, since the first one utilizes fifth-degree polynomials to construct the shape functions and the second implements polynomials of degree two.
