This paper demonstrates the development of optical temperature sensor based on the etched planar waveguide Bragg grating. Topics include design and fabrication of the etched planar waveguide Bragg grating, investigation of the grating reflection characteristics, and temperature measurement capabilities. The typical bandwidth and reflectivity of the surface etched grating has been ~0.2nm and ~7%, respectively, at a wavelength of ~1552nm. The temperature-induced wavelength change of the optical sensor is found to be slightly non-linear over ~20$0^{\circ}C$ temperature range. Theoretical models for the grating response of the sensor based on waveguide and plate deformation theories agree with experiments to within acceptable tolerance.
Among many fabrication methods of composite materials, filament winding is the most effective method for fabricating axis-symmetric structures such as pressure tanks and pipes. Filament wound pressure tanks are under high internal pressure during the operation and it has the complexity in damage mechanisms and failure modes. For this reason, it is necessary to monitor the tank through its operation as well as whole fabrication process. A large number of sensors must be embedded into multi points of the tank from its fabrication step for monitoring the whole tank. Fiber optic sensors, especially fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensors are widely used for various applications because of good multiplexing capabilities. However, we need to develop the embedding technique of FBG sensors into harsh inner environment of the tank far the successful embedment. In this paper, we studied the embedding technique of a number of FBG sensors into filament wound pressure tanks considering multiplexing.

FBG sensors have been studied more actively than any other fiber optic sensor because of good multiplexing capabilities among many fiber optic sensors. The demodulation method of FBG sensors is based on the detection of wavelength shift of their sensor peaks and properties such as strain and temperature can be measured by detecting them. However, the signal stability of FBG sensors can be influenced by the strain gradient induced by structural geometry or cracks on the surface when FBG sensors are embedded into or attached on the structure. In this study, the signal characteristics of reflected spectra of FBG sensors under strain gradient were verified and the relations between the grating length of FBG sensors and the amount of strain gradient were investigated. From the experimental results, the recommended working range of FBG sensors under strain gradients was shown quantitatively with respect to grating lengths of them.

In-situ structural health monitoring of filament wound pressure tanks were conducted during water-pressurizing test using embedded fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. We need to monitor inner strains during working in order to verify the health condition of pressure tanks more accurately because finite element analyses on filament wound pressure tanks usually show large differences between inner and outer strains. Fiber optic sensors, especially FBG sensors can be easily embedded into the composite structures contrary to conventional electric strain gages (ESGs). In addition, many FBG sensors can be multiplexed in single optical fiber using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) techniques. We fabricated a standard testing and evaluation bottle (STEB) with embedded FBG sensors and performed a water-pressurizing test. In order to increase the survivability of embedded FBG sensors, we suggested a revised fabrication process for embedding FBG sensors into a filament wound pressure tank, which includes a new protecting technique of sensor heads, the grating parts. From the experimental results, it was demonstrated that FBG sensors can be successfully adapted to filament wound pressure tanks for their structural health monitoring by embedding.
Biophotonic sensors based on polymer waveguide with Bragg reflection grating are demonstrated in this work. Waveguide Bragg reflectors were designed by using the effective index method and the transmission matrix method. The grating pattern was formed by exposing the laser interference pattern on a photoresist. On top of the inverted rib waveguide, the Bragg reflection grating was inscribed by the O2 plasma etching. In order to perform the bio-molecule detection experiment, a calixarene molecule was self-assembled on top of thin Au film deposited on the waveguide Bragg reflector. To measure the response of the sensor, several PBS solutions with different concentrations of potassium ion from 1 pM to $100\;{\mu}M$ were dropped on the sensor surface. The shift of Bragg reflection wavelength was observed from the fabricated sensor device, which was proportional to the concentration of potassium ion ranging from 1 pM to 108 pM.

Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) Sensors as advanced measuring system are introduced and actively being applied to establish a smart monitoring system for bridge maintenance. This study develops FBG sensors and suggests a smart monitoring system. As for its first step, to verify the reliability of FBG sensors that developed, a specimen is made FBG sensors and electric sensor are attached. Then, Static test is conducted on the specimen on the specimens to check reliability. In addition, this study estimates the optimum deflection curve that converts strain curve data measured by FBG sensors into deflection.
We have proposed and demonstrated an gas-flow sensor using optical fiber bragg grating(FEG). The flow sensor has no electronics and no mechanical parts in its sensing part and the structure is th11s simple and immune to electromagnetic interference(EMI). The FEG sensor was consisted qf the sensing element and a coil heater. The metal coil was used to supply the current to the FEG. While some currents supply to the coil, the refractive index of the FEG under the coil is changed and thus the wavelength shift of fiber optic sensor was induced In this work, the wavelength shift according to flow-rate was experimentally studied and was used to evaluate the gas flow-rate in a gas tube. As a result, it was possible to measure the flow-rate in a linear range from 5 to $20{\ell}/min$ with a resolution of approximately $1{\ell}/min$ at the applied currents of 100 mA and 120 mA. The measured sensitivities were $15.3\;pm/\ell/min$ for 100 mA and $20.2\;pm/\ell/min$ for 120 mA.

Strain-gauges have been dominantly used to measure strain at various points on a rotor, however, either a slip ring or telemetry has to be used to send sensor signals to data acquisition instruments at stationary side. Both slip ring and telemetry have numerous inherent problems which force severe limitations in real applications. This paper introduces a new rotor condition monitoring system using FBG(Fiber Bragg Grating) sensors and a rotary optical coupler. A single optical fiber with many FBG sensors is installed on the rotor and an optical dynamic interrogator is installed at stationary side. The sensor signal connection between rotating part and stationary part is made by the rotary optical coupling method which makes use of light's unique characteristic-light travels through space. Broad band light source from the interrogator travels to the optical fiber on the rotor and reflected FBG sensor signals travel back to the optical fiber on stationary side and are connected to the interrogator. Rotary optical coupler's insertion loss change due to rotation is compensated by using a reference sensor installed at the center of the rotor. The proposed system's performance has been successfully demonstrated by accurately measuring strains at 5 points on a blade rotating at high speed.

Recently, the interests in structural monitoring of civil infrastructures are increased. Especially, as the civil infrastructures such as bridges, tunnels and buildings become large-scale, it is necessary to monitor and maintain the safety state of the structures, which requires smart systems that can supply long-term monitoring during the service time of the structures. In this paper, we investigated the possibilities of fiber optic sensor application to the various structures. We investigate the possibility of using fiber optic Bragg grating sensors to joint structure. The sensors show good response to the structural behavior of the joint while electric gauges lack of sensitivity, durability and long term stability for continuous monitoring. We also apply fiber optic structural monitoring to the composite repaired concrete beam structure. Peel-out effects is detected with optical fiber Bragg grating sensors and the strain difference between main structure and repaired carbon sheets is observed when they separate each other. The real field test was performed to verify the behaviors of fiber Bragg grating sensors attached to the containment structure in Uljin nuclear power plant in Korea as a part of structural integrity test which demonstrates that the structural response of the non-prototype primary containment structures. The optical fiber Bragg grating sensor smart system which is the probable means for long term assessments can be applicable to monitoring of structural members in various civil infrastructures.
