  • The applicability of the ultrafiltration process for color removal from dye-containing water has been examined in this study. The optimization of major process variables, such as dye concentration, chitosan concentration and transmembrane pressure on permeate flux and color removal efficiency was investigated. To find the most appropriate results for the experiment, the Box-Wilson experimental design method was employed. The results were correlated by a response function and the coefficients were determined by regression analysis. Permeate flux variation and color removal efficiency determined from the response functions were in good agreement with the experimental results. The optimum conditions of chitosan concentration, dye concentration and pressure were 50 mg/l, 50 mg/l and 3 bars, respectively for the highest permeate flux. On the other hand, optimum conditions for color removal efficiency were determined as 50 mg/l of dye concentration, 50 mg/l of chitosan concentration and 1 bar of pressure.

  • Generally, diaphragms are installed in the box girder to prevent or decrease the distortion of the cross section. In engineering practice, diaphragms are spaced in 5m intervals without reasonable basis. the usual diaphragm type is solid-plate type. It is considered to be noneconomical design to the almost design engineers. In this paper, the parametric study was performed to present the design proposal about the diaphragm stiffness and spacing only in the single cell box girder. For that, the distortional warping normal stress, bending normal stress and transverse bending normal stress were analyzed using finite element program 'SMB' for the accurate structural analysis.

  • In this study, the elimination of $Ni^{2+}$ using 13X sorbent due to an electrostatic interaction was reported. The significant factors including pH, time and 13X sorbent amount were investigated using Box-Behnken design (BBD). In the optimum experimental conditions, the linear rang and limit of detection of the proposed method were 0.1-20 and $0.102mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively. The precision as RSD% was 1.3% for concentration of $2mg\;L^{-1}$. Concerning the excellent recoveries in a short time with highly efficient sample clean-up and removal, this method may be a very powerful and innovative future sample removal technique. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on using BBD for optimizing the parameters affected the removal of $Ni^{2+}$ by 13X zeolite sorbent.

  • The program which could determine cross-sectional dimension of the prestressed concrete box girder bridges at the stage of preliminary design was developed using the optimal technique in this study. It could minimize the cost required in the design of box girder bridges and the construction with the full staging method. Objective cost function consisted of six independent variables such as height of cross-section, jacking force and thickness of web and bottom flange. The SUMT(Sequntial Unconstrained minimization Technique) was used to solve the constrained nonlinear minimization optimal problem. Using the program developed in this study, optimum design was performed for existing bridges with one cell cross section of constant depth. The result verify the compatibility of the program.

  • Rigorous FE(Finite Element) analyses of the cable-stayed bridge with steel-box girder, the main construction method of which is FCM (Free Cantilever Method), are presented in this paper. The analysis and the checking of design for a derrick crane under several loading conditions are performed using the software MIDAS/Civil and the beam elements are used to model the main structure. Among all the construction stages, special construction stages are chosen and considered to ensure the safety of segments of box girder The stress analysis for lifting of a segment of box girder is performed using the software SAP2000 and the shell elements of which having 6 DOF(Degrees Of Freedom) per nodes are successfully used to model the segment of box girder for the purpose of capturing the detailed behaviors on the folded-plates in the segment. Finally, concluding remarks are given to improve a design of the derrick crane and the segment based on the results from this study.

  • Flow through the culvert is very complex depending on the characteristics of hydraulic conditions. A design method using a monograph is normally employed due to the wide range of flow characteristics and the difficulty of calculating inlet water depth. The present study suggests the method for determining the inlet water depth of box culvert using Bernoulli's equation. By employing the explicit equation of inlet water depth, a standard design method of box culvert is developed for a wide range of flow characteristics. Explicit solution techniques are proposed to determine the width and height, slope and discharge of box culvert.

  • An overhead travelling crane structure of two doubly symmetric welded box beams is designed for minimum cost. The rails are placed over the inner webs of box beams. The following design constraints are considered: local buckling of web and flange plates, fatigue of the butt K weld under rail and fatigue of fillet welds joining the transverse diaphragms to the box beams, fatigue of CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced plastic) laminate, deflection constraint. For the formulation of constraints the relatively new standard for cranes EN 13001-3-1 (2010) is used. To fulfill the deflection constraint CFRP strengthening should be used. The application of CFRP materials in strengthening of steel and concrete structures are widely used in civil engineering applications due to their unique advantages. In our study, we wanted to show how the mechanical properties of traditional materials can be improved by the application of composite materials and how advanced materials and new production technologies can be applied. In the optimization the following cost parts are considered: material, assembly and welding of the steel structure, material and fabrication cost of CFRP strengthening. The optimization is performed by systematic search using a MathCAD program.

  • Underwater vehicles play a very important role in underwater engineering. Water-tight junction box (WJB) is one of the key components in underwater vehicle. This paper puts forward a pressure self-adaptive water-tight junction box (PSAWJB) which improves the reliability of the WJB significantly by solving the sealing and pressure problems in conventional WJB design. By redundancy design method, the pressure self-adaptive equalizer (PSAE) is designed in such a way that it consists of a piston pressure-adaptive compensator (PPAC) and a titanium film pressure-adaptive compensator (TFPAC). According to hydro-mechanical simulations, the operating volume of the PSAE is more than or equal to 11.6 % of the volume of WJB liquid system. Furthermore, the required operating volume of the PSAE also increases as the gas content of oil, hydrostatic pressure or temperature difference increases. The reliability of the PSAWJB is proved by hyperbaric chamber tests.

  • The Purpose of this study is to develop landscape Preference and define elements of difference in landscape preference of the 1-span Steel Box Girder Bridge by Bridge Shape Parameters(BSP) through Design of Experiments. Lately, the 1-span Steel Box Girder Bridge is dominations much component ratio and the Steel Box Girder Bridge has strong Points that is economically Profitable and management has easy when construct. but landscape preference of the 1-span Steel Box Girder Bridge was evaluated low because impression of landscape is being surfeited and dulled. Do to consider optimization in design that give change to Bridge Shape Parameters(BSP) to supplement this shortcoming in this study. Therefore, this study changes Bridge Shape Parameters(BSP) and extract elements that influence in landscape preference of the 1-span Steel Box Girder Bridge. and based on the design that consider landscape Preference of the 1-span Steel Box Girder Bridge, some essential guidelines for rational design of the 1-span Steel Box Girder Bridge suggested.
