  • An algorithm of fuzzy variable structrue control is proposed to design a closed loop fuel-injection system for the emission control of automotive gasoline engines. Fuzzy control is combined with sliding control at the switching boundary layer to improve the chattering of the stoichiometric air to fuel ratio. Multi-staged fuzzy rules are introduced to improve the adaptiveness of control system for the various operating conditions of engines, and a simplified technique of fuzzy inference is also adopted to improve the computational efficiency based on nonfuzzy micro-processors. The proposed method provides an effective way of engine controller design due to its hybrid structure satisfying the requirements of robustness and stability. The great potential of the fuzzy variable structure control is shown through a hardware-testing with an Intel 80C186 processor for controller and a typical engine-only model on an AD-100 computer.

  • A low cost PDP sustain power supply is proposed based on flyback topology. By using Boundary Conduction Method(BCM) to control input current regulation, DCM condition can be met under all load conditions. Another feature of the proposed method is that a excessive voltage stress due to the link voltage increase can be suppressed by removing link capacitor and suggest new 'Level-shifting switch driver'. this new gate driver is improved 66% of efficiency than switching loss of a existed push-pull amplifier. The proposed converter is tested with a 400W(200V-2A output) prototype circuit.

  • A control approach for the robust position control of induction motors based on the improved binary disturbance observer is described. The conventional binary disturbance observer is used to remove the chattering problem of a sliding mode disturbance observer. However, the steady state error may be existed in the conventional binary disturbance observer because it estimates external disturbance with a constant boundary layer. In order to overcome this problem, a new binary disturbance observer with an integral augmented switching hyperplane is improved. The robustness is achieved, and the continuous control is realised by employing the improved observer without the chattering problem and the steady state error. The effectiveness of the improved observer is confirmed by the comparative experimental results.

  • This paper proposes a primary side constant power control scheme for TRIAC dimmer compatible LED drivers. The LED driver is a Flyback converter operated in boundary conduction mode (BCM) to minimize the switching loss. With the proposed control scheme, the input power of the Flyback converter can be controlled by the TRIAC dimming angle, which is not affected by AC input voltage variations. Since the output voltage is almost constant for LED loads, the output current can be changed by controlling the input power with a given conversion efficiency. The isolated feedback circuit is eliminated with the proposed primary side control scheme, which dramatically simplifies the whole circuit. In addition, the input current automatically follows the input voltage due to the BCM operation, and the resistive input characteristic can be achieved which is attractive for TRIAC dimming applications. Experimental results from a 15W prototype verify the theoretical analysis.

  • A new dual-loop digital delay-locked loop (DLL) using a hybrid (binary + sequential) search algorithm is presented to achieve both wide-range operation and high delay resolution. A new phase-interpolation range selector (PIRS) and a variable successive approximation register (VSAR) algorithm are adopted to resolve the boundary switching and harmonic locking problems of conventional digital DLLs. The proposed digital DLL, implemented in a $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS process, occupies an active area of $0.19mm^2$ and operates over a wide frequency range of 0.15-1.5 GHz. The DLL dissipates a power of 11.3 mW from a 1.8 V supply at 1 GHz. The measured peak-to-peak output clock jitter is 24 ps (effective pk-pk jitter = 16.5 ps) with an input clock jitter of 7.5 ps at 1.5 GHz. The delay resolution is only 2.2 ps.

  • A fuzzy logic controller derived from the variable structure control (VSC) theory is designed. Unlike the conventional design of the fuzzy controller, we do not fuzzify the error and the rate of error, but fuzzify the sliding surface. After the fuzzy sliding surface is introduced, the fuzzy rules are defined based on the sliding control theory. It will be shown this sliding mode fuzzy controller is a kind of VSC that introduces the boundary layer in the switching surface and that the control input is continuously approximated in the layer. As a result we can guarantee the stability and the robustness by the help of VSC, which were difficult to insure in the past fuzzy controllers. Simulation results for the inverted pendulum will show the validity.

  • Dielectric property of Ba-modified 0.65Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.35PbTiO3 ceramics having compositions near the morphotropic phase boundary was investigated. For the specimens having Ba contents between 0 and 20 at%, the average transition temperature was decreased linearly with increasing Ba contents and the degree of hysteresis was also decreased with increasing Ba contents. The maximum dielectric constants (K), electric field induced polarization(P) and electrically-induced strain(S) were found to exihibit a maximum value at∼3 at% of Ba. The increase of S and the decrease of hysteresis by minor additions of Ba impurities indicated the development of new higher perfomance actuator materials. The composition of Ba-PMN-PT (10/65/35) may be appropriate for capacitor materials because of low hysteresis and high polarization.

  • Ferroelectric material properties are strongly governed by domain structures and their evolution processes, but the evolution processes of complex domain patterns during a macroscopic electrical poling process are still elusive. In the present work, domain-evolution processes in a PZT ceramic near the morphotropic phase-boundary composition were studied during a step-wise electrical poling using piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). Electron backscatter diffraction was used with the PFM data to identify the grain boundaries in the region of interest. In response to an externally the applied electric field, growth and retreat of non-$180^{\circ}$ domain boundaries wasere observed. The results indicate that ferroelectric polarization-switching nucleates and evolves in concordance with the pattern of the pre-existing domains.
