Image saliency detection is the basis of perceptual image processing, which is significant to subsequent image processing methods. Most saliency detection methods can detect only a single object with a high-contrast background, but they have no effect on the extraction of a salient object from images with complex low-contrast backgrounds. With the prior knowledge, this paper proposes a method for detecting salient objects by combining the boundary contrast map and the geodesics-like maps. This method can highlight the foreground uniformly and extract the salient objects efficiently in images with low-contrast backgrounds. The classical receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve, which compares the salient map with the ground truth map, does not reflect the human perception. An ROC curve with distance (distance receiver operating characteristic, DROC) is proposed in this paper, which takes the ROC curve closer to the human subjective perception. Experiments on three benchmark datasets and three low-contrast image datasets, with four evaluation methods including DROC, show that on comparing the eight state-of-the-art approaches, the proposed approach performs well.

This paper proposes the image segmentation algorithm to extracts a fish object from a fish image for fish image retrieval. The conventional algorithm using gray level similarity causes wrong image segmentation result in the boundary area of the object and the background with similar gray level. The proposed algorithm uses the reinforced edge and the adaptive block-based threshold for the boundary area with weak contrast and the virtual object to improve the eroded or disconnected object in the boundary area without contrast. The simulation results show that the percentage of extracting the visual-fine object from the test images is under 90% in the conventional algorithm while it is 97.7% in the proposed algorithms.

In this paper, we studied about the extraction of the parameter and implementation of speechreading system to recognize the Korean 8 vowel. Face features are detected by amplifying, reducing the image value and making a comparison between the image value which is represented for various value in various color space. The eyes position, the nose position, the inner boundary of lip, the outer boundary of upper lip and the outer line of the tooth is found to the feature and using the analysis the area of inner lip, the hight and width of inner lip, the outer line length of the tooth rate about a inner mouth area and the distance between the nose and outer boundary of upper lip are used for the parameter. 2400 data are gathered and analyzed. Based on this analysis, the neural net is constructed and the recognition experiments are performed. In the experiment, 5 normal persons were sampled. The observational error between samples was corrected using normalization method. The experiment show very encouraging result about the usefulness of the parameter.

One major and time-consuming task in fish production is obtaining an accurate estimate of the number of fish produced. In most Nigerian farms, fish counting is performed manually. Digital image processing (DIP) is an inexpensive solution, but its accuracy is affected by noise, overlapping fish, and interfering objects. This study developed a catfish recognition and counting algorithm that introduces detection before counting and consists of six steps: image acquisition, pre-processing, segmentation, feature extraction, recognition, and counting. Images were acquired and pre-processed. The segmentation was performed by applying three methods: image binarization using Otsu thresholding, morphological operations using fill hole, dilation, and opening operations, and boundary segmentation using edge detection. The boundary features were extracted using a chain code algorithm and Fourier descriptors (CH-FD), which were used to train an artificial neural network (ANN) to perform the recognition. The new counting approach, based on the geometry of the fish, was applied to determine the number of fish and was found to be suitable for counting fish of any size and handling overlap. The accuracies of the segmentation algorithm, boundary pixel and Fourier descriptors (BD-FD), and the proposed CH-FD method were 90.34%, 96.6%, and 100% respectively. The proposed counting algorithm demonstrated 100% accuracy.
Soil vapor extraction (SVE) is an effective and cost efficient method of removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and petroleum hydrocarbons from unsaturated soils. Incorporating PVDs in an SVE system can extend the effectiveness of SVE to lower permeability soils by shortening the air flow-paths and ultimately expediting contaminant removal. With this approach, the real bounded system is replaced for the purposes of analysis by an imaginary system of infinite areal extent. The boundary conditions for the contaminant remediation model test include constant head and no flow condition. Due to these parallel boundaries conditions, image wells should be developed in order to maintain the condition of no flow across the impermeable boundary. It is also assumed that the flow is drawdown along the constant head boundary condition. The factors contributing to the difference between the theoretical and measured pressure heads were also analyzed. The flow factor increases as the flow rate is increased. The flow rate is the most important factor that affects the difference between the measured and theoretical pressure heads.

Distance Fourier descriptors of local target boundary and feature information fusion using multiple MLPs (Multilayer perceptrons) are proposed. They are used to identify nonoccluded and partially occluded targets in natural FLIR (forward-looking infrared) images. After segmenting a target, radial Fourier descriptors as global shape features are defined from the target boundary. A target boundary is partitioned into four local boundaries to extract local shape features. In a local boundary, a distance function is defined from boundary points and a line between two extreme points. Distance Fourier descriptors as local shape features are defined by using distance function. One global feature vector and four local feature vectors are used as input data for multiple MLPs to determine final identification result of the target. In the experiments, we show that the proposed method is superior to the traditional feature sets with respect to the identification performance.

This paper aims at improving the accuracy and computational efficiency in reconstructing building boundaries from airborne Lidar points. We proposed an adaptive convex hull algorithm, which is a modified version of local convex hull algorithm in three ways. The candidate points for boundary are first selected to improve efficiency depending on their local density. Second, a searching-space is adjusted adaptively, based on raw data structure, to extract boundary points more robustly. Third, distance between two points and their IDs are utilized in detecting the seed points of inner boundary to distinguish between inner yards and inner holes due to errors or occlusions. The practicability of the approach were evaluated on two urban areas where various buildings exist. The proposed method showed less shape-dissimilarity(8.5%) and proved to be two times more efficient than the other method.

A series of images whose sized and resolutions differ by a constant factor are called an image pyramid. Because the images at high levels are small, large object can be detected on high levels of the pyramid at low cost, But in this way, the boundaries of objects are not accurately localized. Therefore the pyramid algorithms extracte the objects by segmentation the constructed image using bottom-up method and description it in an original resolution using inverse bottom-up method. In this paper, we can project an object down to the next lower level of the pyramid and apply to the boundary adjustment algorithm at that level to localize it more precisely. We repeat the process at successively lower levels. In this paper, we present a method of boundary adjustment using an image pyramid to obtain optimal boundary. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared to those of the conventional method in term of subjective quality of object boundary.

For each character constituting learning data, different fonts are added in pixel unit to create MASK, and then pixel values belonging to the MASK are divided into three groups. The experimental data are modified into skeletal forms, and then regional boundary operation is used to create a boundary that distinguishes the background region adjacent to the skeleton of the character from the background of the modified experimental data. Discordance values between the modified experimental data and the MASKs are calculated, and then the MASK with the minimum value is found. This MASK is selected as a finally recognized result for the given experiment data. The recognition algorithm using skeleton of the character and the regional boundary operation can easily extend the learning data set by adding new fonts to the given learning data, and also it is simple to implement, and high character recognition rate can be obtained.
In this paper, we propose effective boundary line extraction algorithm for moving objects by matching error image and moving vectors, and fast tracking algorithm for moving object by partial boundary lines. We extracted boundary line for moving object by generating seeds with probability distribution function based on Watershed algorithm, and by extracting boundary line for moving objects through extending seeds, and then by using moving vectors. We processed tracking algorithm for moving object by using a part of boundary lines as features. We set up a part of every-direction boundary line for moving object as the initial feature vectors for moving objects. Then, we tracked moving object within current frames by using feature vector for the previous frames. As the result of the simulation for tracking moving object on the real images, we found that tracking processing of the proposed algorithm was simple due to tracking boundary line only for moving object as a feature, in contrast to the traditional tracking algorithm for active contour line that have varying processing cost with the length of boundary line. The operations was reduced about 39% as contrasted with the full search BMA. Tracking error was less than 4 pixel when the feature vector was $(15\times{5)}$ through the information of every-direction boundary line. The proposed algorithm just needed 200 times of search operation.
