  • The fresh fruit juice powder of Coccinia indica W.&A., (Cucurbitaceae, CJP) was studied for the possible activities of antiinflammatory and antinociceptive to rationalize the folkloric use of the plant juice as rasayana. CJP at the doses of 50-200 mg/kg caused a significant (P<0.05 to P<0.001) inhibition of paw edema induced by ${\lambda}$ carrageenin (1%) and histamine $(10^{-3}\;g/ml,\;0.1\;ml)$ in rats. The effect was comparable to the standard cycloxygenase inhibitor brufen at 100 mg/kg and protective percentages were 63.41% and 65.78% respectively. Administration of CJP (50-200 mg/kg) exhibited a moderate increase of the pain threshold on analgesy-meter induced mechanical pain. However CJP significantly prevented the writhing induced by acetic acid in mice and the percentages of inhibitions were 16.98%-35.47%, which is equivalent to 36.67% produced by brufen. These data indicate that the fruit juice of Coccinia indica rationalizes the traditional system of medicine.

  • Pygmaeopremna herbacea (Roxb.) Mold. (Verbenaceae) is a small herb or sometimes an undershrub arising from a perennial rootstock. The dry roots are dark muddy brown in colour having root nodules. Its extensively developed roots are widely used in tribal medicine. They are used as an aphrodisiac and for the treatment of gout, rheumatism and ulcers. This study deals with the detailed pharmacognostical evaluation of the dried roots and root nodules of P. herbacea which includes macro and microscopic studies, determination of physicochemical parameters and chemoprofiling of the extract using HPTLC fingerprint profiles. It was observed that the roots consist of a well developed cortical region consisting of tangentially elongated thin walled parenchymatous cells and contain polygonal stone cells as well as compound starch grains. Also the pith was parenchymatous. The HPTLC fingerprint profile of the methanolic extract showed the presence of seven major bands. Such an analysis may thus be utilized in identifying P. herbacea and in differenciating it from other species which are similar to it or are used as its adultrants/substitutes under the same vernacular name of Bharangi.

  • This study aims to investigate the distribution of the useful resources plants and the flora of Deogyusan. The flora of Deogyusan was investigated from April in 2002 to November in 2003. Vascular plants of this area consist of total 549 taxa; 9 forma, 64 varieties, 476 species, 281 genera, 90 families. It corresponds to $13.5\%$ of totally 4,071 taxa appeared in Korea. Useful plants of this area were investigated 399 taxa. It corresponds to $72.5\%$ of collected plants in this area under our study. Among the useful plants, there are 205 taxa of edible source, 179 taxa of pasture source, 159 taxa of medicinal source, 70 taxa of ornamental source, 15 taxa of timber, and 17 taxa of industrial raw materials. Korean endemic plants were composed 18 families, 23 genera, 19 species, 4 varieties and totaling 25 taxa.

  • This study was carried out to determine the effects of sowing methods after herbicide application on botanical composition, forage yield and chemical contents in the pasture dominated Hypochoeris radicata in Jeju area over two years. It was arranged as a randomized block design with five treatrnents(contro1: none, TI : herbicide application, T2 : herbicide application + oversowing, T3 : herbicide application + overdrilling, T4 : herbicide application + cultivation). In the pasture dominated Hypochoeris radicata, the herbicide (dicamba) treatments improved grass rate with orchardgrass and perennial ryegrass by 97%. The DM yield per ha were much higher(p<0.05) in T2(7,152kg), T3(7,608kg) and T4(8,010kg) than that of control. The chemical compositions of grass (% of DM basis) were not different among treatments, but the overdrilling and cultivation treatments tended to increase the forage crude protein(CP). These results indicate that oversowing or overdrilling after herbicide application can efficiently improve botanical compositions and forage productivity in the pasture dominated Hypochoeris radicata. (Key words : Herbicide, Sowing methods, Botanical composition, Forage production)

  • This experiment was carried out to study the effect of pure nitrogen fertilization on botanical composition of grassland in 1987~ 1988 under practical conditions at the " Federal Institute for Agriculture in the Alps" in Austria. The application rates were 0, 30, 60, 90 and 120kg/ha/cut, the cutting regimes 3-, 4 , 5- and 6-cuts/year. The results were as follows: 1. Only PK fertilization resulted in higher botanical composition of Trifolium repens among legumes in grassland, which was increased by cutting frequency .2. Nitrogen fertilization on three-cut areas resulted in higher existence of generally valuable tall grasses such as Arrhenotherum elatius Trisetum flavescens and Dactylis glomerata . On the other hand, nitrogen fertilization on four-, five- and six-cut areas showed mainly Doctylis glomerato and Poa pratensis appearance. 3.For some cases, appearance of less valuable grasses, herbs and weeds such as Agropyron repens, Poa trivialis, Poa annua, Setoria viridis, Aegopodium podagra rio, Men landrium rubrum, Taraxacum officlnale, Achillea millefolium, Rorippa sylvestris and Polygonum ocleulare was *Bundesanstalt fur alpenlandische Landwirtschaft Gumpenstein(A-8952 Irdning, 6sterreich) increased on medium and high rates of N fertilized areas. 4.Reduction of sward density may also diminish the advantages of nitrogen fertilization and may be threatened by mainly high dressings of nitrogen combined with too late utilization of the sward. 5.Location altered the efficiency of nitrogen fertilization on botanical composition.mposition.

  • Germanium in various botanical drugs was determined by flameless atomic absorption spectro-photometry with a graphite tube atomizer. The amounts of Ge in Zingiberis Rhizoma and Angelicae Radix were $169{\mu}g/g$ and $146{\mu}g/g$, respectively. The amounts of Ge in some other drugs ranged from $70{\mu}g/g$ to $130{\mu}g/g$. There is much more Ge in botanical drugs than in foods.

  • The Korean folk medicine has been used to cure several diseases among the peoples and the folk remedy has so deep root. But the botanical origin of the folk medicine has been no pharmacognostical confirmation on it. It was investigated from March, 1986 to June, 1993 in order to verify its origin by describing botanical name, commercial name, and scientific name.
