  • This study investigates the roles of decomposition methods on high accuracy in daily rainfall prediction from light gradient boosting machine (LightGBM) algorithm. Here, empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and singular spectrum analysis (SSA) methods were considered to decompose and reconstruct input time series into trend terms, fluctuating terms, and noise components. The decomposed time series from EMD and SSA methods were used as input data for LightGBM algorithm in two hybrid models, including empirical mode-based light gradient boosting machine (EMDGBM) and singular spectrum analysis-based light gradient boosting machine (SSAGBM), respectively. A total of four parameters (i.e., temperature, humidity, wind speed, and rainfall) at a daily scale from 2003 to 2017 is used as input data for daily rainfall prediction. As results from statistical performance indicators, it indicates that the SSAGBM model shows a better performance than the EMDGBM model and the original LightGBM algorithm with no decomposition methods. It represents that the accuracy of LightGBM algorithm in rainfall prediction was improved with the SSA method when using multivariate dataset.

  • It is believed that the anomalies or diseases of human organs are identified by the analysis of the patterns. This paper proposes a new classification technique for the identification of cancer disease using the proteome patterns obtained from two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis(2-D PAGE). In the new classification method, three different classification methods such as support vector machine(SVM), multi-layer perceptron(MLP) and k-nearest neighbor(k-NN) are extended by multi-boosting method in an array of subclassifiers and the results of each subclassifier are merged by ensemble method. Genetic algorithm was applied to obtain optimal feature set in each subclassifier. We applied our method to empirical data set from cancer research and the method showed the better accuracy and more stable performance than single classifier.

  • This paper proposes an effective method using Adaptive Boosting to track a person's head in complex background. By only one way to feature extraction methods are not sufficient for modeling a person's head. Therefore, the method proposed in this paper, several feature extraction methods for the accuracy of the detection head running at the same time. Feature Extraction for the imaging of the head was extracted using sub-region and Haar wavelet transform. Sub-region represents the local characteristics of the head, Haar wavelet transform can indicate the frequency characteristics of face. Therefore, if we use them to extract the features of face, effective modeling is possible. In the proposed method to track down the man's head from the input video in real time, we ues the results after learning Harr-wavelet characteristics of the three types using AdaBoosting algorithm. Originally the AdaBoosting algorithm, there is a very long learning time, if learning data was changes, and then it is need to be performed learning again. In order to overcome this shortcoming, in this research propose efficient method using cascade AdaBoosting. This method reduces the learning time for the imaging of the head, and can respond effectively to changes in the learning data. The proposed method generated classifier with excellent performance using less learning time and learning data. In addition, this method accurately detect and track head of person from a variety of head data in real-time video images.

  • The goal of this paper is to compare classification performances and to find a better classifier based on the characteristics of data. The compared methods are CART with two ensemble algorithms, bagging or boosting and SVM. In the empirical study of twenty-eight data sets, we found that SVM has smaller error rate than the other methods in most of data sets. When comparing bagging, boosting and SVM based on the characteristics of data, SVM algorithm is suitable to the data with small numbers of observation and no missing values. On the other hand, boosting algorithm is suitable to the data with number of observation and bagging algorithm is suitable to the data with missing values.

  • In this paper, we propose boosting algorithms when data are very large or coming in batches sequentially over time. In this situation, ordinary boosting algorithm may be inappropriate because it requires the availability of all of the training set at once. To apply to large scale data or data batch stream, we modify the AdaBoost and Arc-x4. These algorithms have good results for both large scale data and data batch stream with or without concept drift on simulated data and real data sets.

  • In this paper, we propose forward stagewise algorithm when data are very large or coming in batches sequentially over time. In this situation, ordinary boosting algorithm for large scale data and data batch stream may be greedy and have worse performance with class noise situations. To overcome those and apply to large scale data or data batch stream, we modify the forward stagewise algorithm. This algorithm has better results for both large scale data and data batch stream with or without concept drift on simulated data and real data sets than boosting algorithms.

  • Although machine learning (ML) techniques have been widely used in various fields of engineering practice, their applications in the field of wind engineering are still at the initial stage. In order to evaluate the feasibility of machine learning algorithms for prediction of wind loads on high-rise buildings, this study took the exposure category type, wind direction and the height of local wind force as the input features and adopted four different machine learning algorithms including k-nearest neighbor (KNN), support vector machine (SVM), gradient boosting regression tree (GBRT) and extreme gradient (XG) boosting to predict wind force coefficients of CAARC standard tall building model. All the hyper-parameters of four ML algorithms are optimized by tree-structured Parzen estimator (TPE). The result shows that mean drag force coefficients and RMS lift force coefficients can be well predicted by the GBRT algorithm model while the RMS drag force coefficients can be forecasted preferably by the XG boosting algorithm model. The proposed machine learning based algorithms for wind loads prediction can be an alternative of traditional wind tunnel tests and computational fluid dynamic simulations.

  • There are two important problems in improving text classification systems based on machine learning approach. The first one, called "selection problem", is how to select a minimum number of informative documents from a given document collection. The second one, called "composition problem", is how to reorganize selected training documents so that they can fit an adopted learning method. The former problem is addressed in "active learning" algorithms, and the latter is discussed in "boosting" algorithms. This paper proposes a new learning method, called AdaBUS, which proactively solves the above problems in the context of Naive Bayes classification systems. The proposed method constructs more accurate classification hypothesis by increasing the valiance in "weak" hypotheses that determine the final classification hypothesis. Consequently, the proposed algorithm yields perturbation effect makes the boosting algorithm work properly. Through the empirical experiment using the Routers-21578 document collection, we show that the AdaBUS algorithm more significantly improves the Naive Bayes-based classification system than other conventional learning methodson system than other conventional learning methods

  • in information retrieval, lack of positive examples is a main cause of poor performance. In this case most learning algorithms may not characteristics in the data to low recall. To solve the problem of unbalanced data, we propose a boosting method that uses linear perceptrons as weak learnrs. The perceptrons are trained on local data sets. The proposed algorithm is applied to text filtering problem for which only a small portion of positive examples is available. In the experiment on category crude of the Reuters-21578 document set, the boosting method achieved the recall of 80.8%, which is 37.2% improvement over multilayer with comparable precision.

  • This paper describes a low frequency electrical nerve stimulator for muscle care. The developed system consist of 8bit low power consumed MPU, voltage boosting circuit converting 9V input to 120V output, repairing circuit for distorted output pulse, LED and buttons for I/O, and electro-chemical pad. The pulse generation algorithm for the muscle care effect is developed with basic pulses such as a single phase rectangle pulse, symmetric rectangle pulse, and depolarized interrupt pulse.
