  • This paper studies a novel boost DC-DC converter operated high efficiency for discontinuous current mode (DCM) control. The converter worked in DCM eliminates the complicated circuit control requirement, reduces a number of components, and reduces the used reactive components size. In the general DCM converter, the switching devices are turned-on the zero current switching (ZCS), and the switching devices must be switched-off at a maximum reactor current. To achieve the zero voltage switching (ZVS) at the switching turn-off, the proposed converter is constructed by using a new loss-less snubber circuit. Soft-switched operation of the proposed boost converter is verified by digital simulation and experimental results. A new boost converter achieves the soft-switching for all switching devices without increasing their voltage and current stresses. The result is that the switching loss is very low and the efficiency of boost DC-DC converter is high.

  • This paper presents a new interleaved pulse-width modulation (PWM) boost-flyback converter to achieve power factor correction (PFC) and regulate DC bus voltage. The adopted boost-flyback converter has a high voltage conversion ratio to overcome the limit of conventional boost or buck-boost converter with narrow turn-off period. The proposed converter has wide turn-off period compared with a conventional boost converter. Thus, the higher output voltage can be achieved in the proposed converter. The interleaved PWM can further reduce the input and output ripple currents such that the sizes of inductor and capacitor are reduced. Since boundary conduction mode (BCM) is adopted to achieve power factor correction, power switches are turned on at zero current switching (ZCS) and switching losses are reduced. The circuit configuration, principle operation, system analysis, and design consideration of the proposed converter are presented in detail. Finally, experiments conducted on a laboratory prototype rated at 500W were presented to verify the effectiveness of the converter.

  • In this study, single-phase and three-level boost converters applied to the photovoltaic system were compared and analyzed in terms of efficiency and power density according to the input voltage and load conditions. For accurate analysis of efficiency, the losses in each device of the single-phase and three-level boost converters were derived using mathematical equations and simulations by using the PSIM thermal module. Then, the losses were compared with the efficiency confirmed through the actual experiments. Results confirmed that the efficiency and power density can be improved by applying the three-level boost converter to the system according to the selection of the switching frequency.

  • A new SPWM inverter using three-phase boost converter by auxiliary partial resonant with high power factor and high efficiency is proposed. The proposed boost converter is constructed by using a resonant network in parallel with the switch of the conventional boost converter. The devices are switched at zero voltage or zero current eliminating the switching loss. A new Partial resonant boost converter achieves zero-voltage switching (ZVS) or zero-current switching (ZCS) for all switch devices without increasing their voltage and current stresses. This paper introduces elimination of low-order harmonics compared with conventional SPWM inverter and SPWM inverter using three-phase boost converter by auxiliary Partial resonant.

  • This paper presents a control method for reducing the current distortion in an indirect matrix converter (IMC) operating in boost mode under unbalanced input conditions. IMCs operating in boost mode are useful in distributed generation (DG) systems. They are connected with renewable energy systems (RESs) and the grid to transmit the power generated by the RES. However, under unbalanced voltage conditions of the RES, which is connected with the input stage of the IMC operating in boost mode, the input-output currents are distorted. In particular, the output current distortions cause a ripple of the power, which is transferred to the grid. This aggravates the reliability and stability of the DG system. Therefore, in this paper, a control method using positive/negative sequence voltages and currents is proposed for reducing the current distortion of both side in IMCs operating in boost mode. Simulation and experimental results have been presented to validate effectiveness of the proposed control method.

  • This paper proposes a hybrid-boost Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) for the Medium-Voltage (MV) Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) employed in subsea applications, such as oil and gas recovery. In the presented architecture, a hybrid-boost MMC with a reduced number of semiconductor devices driving a multiphase Induction Machine (IM) is investigated. The stepped output voltage generated by the MMC reduces or eliminates the filtering requirements. Moreover, the boosting capability of the proposed architecture eliminates the need for bulky low-frequency transformers at the converter output terminals. A detailed illustration of the hybrid-boost MMC operation, the expected limitations/constraints, and the voltage balancing technique are presented. A simulation model of the proposed MV hybrid-boost MMC-based five-phase IM drive has been built to investigate the system performance. Finally, a downscaled prototype has been constructed for experimental verification.

  • In this paper, we design a DC-DC boost converter with RF noise immunity to supply a stable positive output voltage for OLED displays. For RF noise immunity, an input voltage variation reduction circuit (IVVRC) is adopted to ensure display quality by reducing the undershoot and overshoot of output voltage. The boost converter for a positive voltage Vpos operates in the SPWM-PWM dual mode and has a dead-time controller using a dead-time detector, resulting in increased power efficiency. A chip was fabricated using a 0.18 um BCDMOS process. Measurement results show that power efficiency is 30% ~ 76% for load current range from 1 mA to 100 mA. The boost converter with the IVVRC has an overshoot of 6 mV and undershoot of 4 mV compared to a boost converter without that circuit with 18 mV and 20 mV, respectively.

  • This paper explores the variation of DC-Link current ripple analysis in terms of duty cycle and phase angle of Multi-phase/Multi-stage boost converter. A 2-Stage/1-Stage boost converter DC-Link current is used to determine the difference between the 1st stage diode current and the 2nd stage inductor current. Each stage boost converter diode and inductor current is subordinate to the phase angle and duty cycle. The magnitude of the ripple current is variable according to phase angle and duty cycle. The analysis results are verified by variation of DC-Link current ripple using a 1kW typical 2-stage/1-stage boost converter.

  • In a classification problem, data imbalance occurs when the number of instances in one class greatly outnumbers the number of instances in the other class. Such data sets often cause a default classifier to be built due to skewed boundary and thus the reduction in the classification accuracy of such a classifier. This paper proposes a Geometric Mean-based Boosting (GM-Boost) to resolve the problem of data imbalance. Since GM-Boost introduces the notion of geometric mean, it can perform learning process considering both majority and minority sides, and reinforce the learning on misclassified data. An empirical study with bankruptcy prediction on Korea companies shows that GM-Boost has the higher classification accuracy than previous methods including Under-sampling, Over-Sampling, and AdaBoost, used in imbalanced data and robust learning performance regardless of the degree of data imbalance.

  • The face recognition has been used in a variety fields, such as identification and security. The procedure of the face recognition is as follows; extracting face features of face images, learning the extracted face features, and selecting some features among all extracted face features. The selected features have discrimination and are used for face recognition. However, there are numerous face features extracted from face images. If a face recognition system uses all extracted features, a high computing time is required for learning face features and the efficiency of computing resources decreases. To solve this problem, many researchers have proposed various Boosting methods, which improve the performance of learning algorithms. Mutual-Boost is the typical Boosting method and efficiently selects face features by using mutual information between two features. In this paper, we propose a GroupMutual-Boost method for improving Mutual-Boost. Our proposed method can shorten the time required for learning and recognizing face features and use computing resources more effectively since the method does not learn individual features but a feature group.
