  • The feeding habits of Boleophthalmus pectinirostris were studied using 198 specimens collected monthly from April 2014 to March 2015 in the intertidal zone of Beolgyo, Korea. The size of B. pectinirostris ranged from 6.5 to 18.7 cm in total length (TL, cm). B. pectinirostris was herbivore that consumes mainly centric and pennate diatoms. Its diets also included small quantities of Prorocentrum dinoflagellates. and nematods. B. pectinirostris predominantly consumed diatoms (mainly Pleurosigma spp., Navicula spp., Nitzschia spp., Gyrosigma spp.) in all fish size classes, and all months, and thus there were no significant diet changes in relation to size and month.

  • This study was carried out to investigate seasonal changes in body composition in Boleophthalmus pectinirostris in Korea. B. pectinirostris collected in Gangjin, Jeonnam, consisted of 58.7-75.8% moisture content, 16.1-17.6% protein, 0.8-3.4% crude lipids, and 1.3-3.6% crude ash. Livers consisted of 15-17% moisture content, 14.0-16.8% crude protein, 34.4-71.2% crude lipids, and 0.5-1.2% crude ash. Calcium, iron, potassium, etc., content in B. pectinirostris muscle averaged 267.5-599.8 mg/100 g, 1.98-28.3 mg, 160.7-327.9 mg, 20.6-60.2 mg, 0.4-2.2 mg, 0.23-0.46 mg, 66.5-192.9 mg, and 1.32-3.8 mg, respectively. (Please clarify: the list of measured values must correspond directly with what was measured, not just "etc.") The major amino acids in B. pectinirostris muscle, in proportional order, were glutamic acid, isoleucine, and leucine; whereas the major amino acids in the liver were glutamic acid, lysine, aspartic acid, and leucine. The major saturated fatty acids in the muscle were palmitic acid (15-19%) and stearic acid (8-11%). The major monoenes and polyenes were palmitoleic acid (C16:1) and oleic acid (C18:1), and EPA and DHA, respectively. The major saturated fatty acids and polyenes in the liver were the same as in muscle, but the monoenes were palmitoleic acid (C16:1) and cis-10-hepta-decenoic acid (C17:1). Seasonal changes in B. pectinirostris body composition may be attributable to differential accumulation of fat and nutrients in comparison to the spawning and hibernation period.

  • A survey was performed in order to determine the infection status of the metacercariae of heterophyid fluke in two goby species, Boleophthalmus pectinirostris and Scartelaos sp., collected from Gangjin-gun, and Shinangun, Sooncheon-shi, Jeollanam-do, Republic of Korea. A total of three metacercariae of Heterophyopsis continua was found in only one B. pectinirostris $(10.0\%)$ from Gangjin-gun. Heterophyes nocens metacercariae were detected in 24 B. pectinirostris $(96.0\%)$ and 14 Scartelaos sp. $(63.6\%)$ from Shinan-gun. Heterophyopsis continua metacercariae were found in 11 B. pectinirostris $(44.0\%)$ and 21 Scartelaos sp. $(95.5\%)$ from Shinan-gun. Stictodora fuscata metacercariae were detected in 18 B. pectinirostris $(72.0\%)$ from Shinan-gun. No metacercariae were detected in 20 B. pectinirostris from Sooncheon-shi. From the above results, this study is the first to prove that B. pectinirostris and Scartelaos sp. serve as the second intermediate hosts of some heterophyid flukes in Korea.

  • For the study of the reproductive mechanism associated with the process of vitellogenesis, oocyte development and vitellogenesis during oogenesis in female Boleophthalmus pectinirostris were investigated by electron microscopic observations. The ovary consists of a pair of saccular structures with many ovarian lobules. In the early vitellogenic oocyte, the Golgi complex plays an important role leading to the formation of yolk vesicles containing carbohydrate yolks. At this time many pinocytotic vesicles containing yolk precursors are observed in the cytoplasm near the region of initial formation of the zona radiata. In the late vitellogenic oocytes, the multivesicular bodies, which are formed by modified mitochondria, are involved in the formation of the primary yolk granules. Precursors of yolk granules and multivesicular bodies develop to primary yolk globules with participation of pinocytotic vesicles. After primary yolk globules mix with each other, they develop into secondary and tertiary yolk globules. Based on these findings, vitellogenesis of B. pectinirostris occurs by way of the processes of endogenous autosynthesis and exogenous heterosynthesis. The process of autosynthesis involves the combined activity of the Golgi complex, mitochondria, and multivesicular bodies. However, the process of heterosynthesis involves pinocytotic incorporation of extraovarian precursors into the zona radiata of vitellogenic oocytes by way of the thecal cell layers and granulosa cells.

  • Phylogenetic relationships and DNA polymorphism among local populations of two Korean gobiidae species: Boleophthalmus pectinirostris and Scartelaos gigas were investigated based on 12S and 16S mitochondrial DNA and mitochondrial cytochrome b DNA sequences. DNA polymorphisms of B. pectinirostris between Suncheon and Gunsan populations were 100% identity from 434 bp segment of 12S rRNA gene and from 444 bp segment of mitochondrial cytochrome b genes, and 99.6% (2 bp different) identity from 484 bp segments of 16S rRNA genes. These results indicated the long period of geographic isolation between two populations of B. pectinirostris in Korea caused such high degrees of DNA polymorphisms. Based on the phylogenetic tree constructed from the two gobiid species in Korea, two genetically distinct groups of B. pectinirostris and S. gigas groups were recognized.

  • Age and growth of the blue spot mudskipper (Boleophthalmus pectinirostris) were studied using the samples caught in the mud flats of southwestern Korea during April-October, 2001. The value of the marginal index of the second actinost bone was the lowest in July and October and indicated by rings that was analysis of formed teice a year. The relationship between body weigt (BW) and total length (TL) was expressed as BW=0.000005 $TL^{3.12}\;(r^2=0.92)$ for females and BW=0.000476 $TL=^{2.18}\;(r^2=0.62)$ for males. Regression analysis of TL-BW between sexes showed a significant difference (P<0.01). Relationship between total length (TL) and actinost radius (R) were expressed as TL=16.9+33.4 R $(r^2=0.62)$ for females and TL=45.8+26.2 R $(r^2=0.41)$ for males. Growth parameters, $L\infty,t_0$ and K were estimated as 165.2 mm, -0.23, and 1.07 for females and 155.3 mm, -0.35, and 1.39 for males.

  • The present study observed the ultrastructure of testis of bluespotted mud hopper(Boleophthalmus pectinirostris), and sperrnatogenesis was discussed also. The testis was surrounded by a thin adventitia, inside which spermatocyst composed the parenchyma of testis. Each lobule was enwrapped by many spermatocysts, which were filled with different kinds of spermatogenic cell clusters at the same developmental stage. In the lobule lumen there are large numbers of spermatozoa The thin adventitia(outer wall) of testis was composed of outer epithelium, and the underlying layers, such as collagen fiber layer, and myoid tissue. The myoid tissue elongated into the inside of testis, became the main componentof interstitium between spermatocyst where sperrnatogenesis occurred. In addition interstitial cells containing dense homogeneous nucleus and abundant mitochondria were observed. Spermatogonia contained round nucleus with diffuse chromatin and nucleolus, and dense nuclear bodies surround by mitochondria in cytoplasm. The synaptonemal . complex was observed in primary spermatocytes clearly. Early spermatid presented larger round nucleus composed of granular chromatin, which was located in the center of cytoplasm. The nucleus of mid-spermatid composed of finely granular chromatin lied on one side of spermatid, and abundant mitochondria had migrated another side. A nuclear fossa appeared in the site near mitochondria in late-spermatid, and the centriole was formed in nuclear fossa.

  • Ecology and life History of the mudskipper, Boieophthaimus pectinirostris were investigated based on the specimens collected from the Korean roasts from 1978 to 1994. The spawning of this species takes place during the period from June to August. Prolarva hatched from egg was 3.3mm in total length, and began to bottom life in TL 16.0mm of 40 days after hatching. The stomach contents were principally diatoms. In the foraging behavior, this species were conducted at the wet soft mud on the upper tidal zones. The burrowing observed in the intertidal mud flat was YL type. B. pectinirostris is restricted to western and southwestern coast of Korea, but their habitats and individuals are being reduced by the result of reclimation to tide land.
