Purpose : Obesity is associated with disturbances of ventilatory functions in adults. But few studies have evaluated the pulmonary complications of obesity in the pediatric population. The purpose of this study is to clarify the effects of obesity on pulmonary function and body composition in obese children. Methods : Forty seven obese children whose ages ranged from nine to twelve years were evaluated for their body composition(intracellular fluid, extracellular fluid, protein mass, mineral mass, soft lean mass, fat mass, percent body fat, fat distribution) by bioelectrical impedance analysis. Hemoglobin, serum glucose, aspartate aminotransferase(AST), alanine aminotransferase(ALT), total cholesterol and triglycerides were measured. Pulmonary function test was performed by spirometer. Results : Intracellular fluid, protein mass, fat mass, percent body fat and fat distribution were significantly higher in severely obese children with an obesity index of more than 150 percent compared with those with an index of less than 150 percent. Peak expiratory flow rate(PEFR) was significantly lower in severely obese children with obesity index of more than 150 percent compared with those with less than 150 percent($241.7{\pm}14.6L/sec$ vs $276.8{\pm}64.3L/sec$). PEFR, forced expiratory flow 25 percent($FEF_{25}$), mid expiratory flow rate(MEFR), forced expiratory flow 50 percent($FEF_{50}$), forced expiratory volume in 1st second($FEV_1$) and forced vital capacity(FVC) were decreased in 37.0 percent, 14.8 percent, 14.8 percent, 11.1 percent, 3.7 percent and 3.7 percent of obese children, respectively. Conclusion : PEFR was significantly decreased in obese children. Pulmonary function test must be performed in severely obese children and more extended study is needed in other age groups.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of dietary fat inclusion on nutrient intake, body weight, milk production, return to estrus, pregnancy and lambing of winter-lambing, postpartum Awassi ewes. Thirty multiparous, winter-lambing Awassi ewes (body weight=51${\pm}$7.0 kg) were randomly assigned to three dietary treatments (n=10) for 62 days using a completely randomized design. Experimental diets were isonitrogenous, and were formulated to contain 0 (CON), 2.5 (MF), and 5% (HF) added fat, and 33% of the dietary crude protein (CP) as undegradable intake protein (UIP). On day 26 postpartum (day 0=parturition), ewes and their lambs were housed in individual pens for 28 days. Feed offered and refused was recorded daily. At the end of this period, ewes and their lambs within each treatment were combined into one group and fed their respective diet ad libitum. One fertile Awassi ram fitted with a marking harness was allowed with each group for 34 days. No significant (p>0.05) differences in dry matter intake, organic matter intake, and crude protein intake were observed for ewes fed the three experimental diets. No difference was observed in metabolizable energy intake (MEI) for ewes fed the CON and the MF diets (average 8.3 Mcal/d) diet. However, ewes fed the HF diet had greater(p<0.05) MEI compared with the rest of the treatments. Ewe body weights increased throughout the study, unaffected by the experimental diets. No significant differences in milk production were found among ewes fed the three experimental diets. No significant differences were observed in pregnancy rate (6/10, 5/10, 6/10 for CON, MF and HF diets, respectively), lambing rate and the number of lambs per ewe among the three treatments. postpartum reproductive performance of well-fed, winter-lambing Awassi ewes.
A high molecular ar weight water-soluble chitosan (WSC) with an average molecular weight of 300 kD and a deacethylation level of over 90% was produced using a simple multi-step-membrane separation process. It is known that WSC prevents obesity induced by a high-fat diet. Consequently, this study investigated whether or not WSC improved the ovarian dysfunction caused by obesity in mice. The mice were fed a high density protein and lipid diet for weeks, followed by the administration of WSC at 480 mg/kg body weight per day for 4 days. Thereafter, the changes in body weight, ovulation rate, in vivo and in vitro fertilization and emboryonic development were measured . WSC markedly reduced the body weight of obese mice fed with a high-fat diet, but not in mice fed with a normal diet. WSC had siginificant effects on the ovulation rate, both the in vivo and in vitro fertilization rates and embryonic development. These results indicate an improvement in the ovarian and oviduct dysfunction caused by obesity, and suggest an adjustment in the internal secretions and metabolic functions.
This study was conducted to evaluate the weight reduction effect of yeast hydrolysate-SR101. Thirty female college students participated in a 6 week weight control program. All subjects were randomly assigned to either the placebo group, YH-SR101 (yeast hydrolysate-SR101) group, or eX diet (product of yeast hydrolysate-SR101) group. The mean energy intake of the placebo group was 1445.2${\pm}$364.0 kcal (carbohydrate: 60.1%, protein: 25.6%, fat: 14.3%), while those of the YH-SR101 and the eX diet group were 1505.6${\pm}$296.2 kcal (carbohydrate: 60.5%, protein: 22.2%, fat: 14.8%) and 1353.8${\pm}$326.3 kcal (carbohydrate: 63.2%, protein: 20.9%, fat: 15.9%), respectively. The placebo group lost 0.19${\pm}$1.14 kg of body weight, while the treatment groups (YH-SR101 and eX diet) lost 1.13${\pm}$0.83 and 1.54${\pm}$0.74 kg of body weight, respectively. There were significant differences in the decrease in body weight between the placebo and the treatment group (p<0.05). There were also significant differences in the decrease in fat mass between the placebo and treatment group (p<0.05). Furthermore, the BMI of the YH-SR101 and the eX diet groups also differed significantly before and after the diet program (p<0.05). Additionally, the BMI and waist size reduction of the treatment groups (YH-SR101 and eX diet group) differed significantly when compared to the placebo (p<0.05). The reduction of the resting metabolic rate (RMR) blood glucose, total-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and triglyceride did not differ significantly among groups. Taken together, these findings indicate that consumption of yeast hydrolysate-SR101 and eX Diet may lead to decreased body weight and fat.
Day-old male and female broilers obtained from commercial strain (Hubbard) were used in this study. At 7 days of age, all chicks were weighed individually (female 0.11 kg and male 0.12 kg in average) and divided into 5 group of 45 birds each group with no replicate in each treatment group as follows: 1. fed ad libitum; 2. fed 75% ad libitum; 3. fed 65% ad libitum; 4. fed 55% ad libitum; 5. fed 45% ad libitum. Chicks were restricted for 10 days (d 7 through 17) of a 56-day trial. Chicks were fed a commercial starter diet (crude protein (CP) 23.8% and metabolizable energy (ME) 3,070 kcal/kg) for 21 days, and commercial finisher diet (CP 20% and ME 3,160 kcal/kg) from 22 to 56 days of age. When chicks were feed-restricted at an early age, compensatory growth did not immediately occur following refeeding. Body weights of restricted chicks were not equal to the ad libitum chicks before 49 days of age. At 56 dyas of age, body weights of restricted chicks were heavier (p<0.01). Abdominal fat values of female chicks fed ad libitum was not significantly different from those fed 45% to 75% ad libitum. Carcass fat values of restricted female chicks were lower than those of control chicks when female chicks were fed either 55% or 45% ad libitum. Furthermore, feed efficiencies of restricted chicks were better. The response of chicks to early feed restriction might depend on the degree of feed restriction, and sex. Factors contributing carcass fat included energy loss, fat protein ratio of carcass, fatty acid synthesis in the liver and triglyceride content of the liver. The heavier body weights in the restricted chicks might be correlated with the lower growth rate during period of feed restriction.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to provide the basic materials to form sense of value for health and to emphasize the importance of physical education by comparative analysis of physique, physical fitness, body composition and blood. Methods: The subjects were 188 female college students and they were classified 3 groups by BMI: lower weight group (LWG), normal weight group (NWG), and over weight group (OWG). In the elderly, a lower muscle mass and higher body fat mass are induced by a lower level of physical activity. A negatively changed body composition with an advanced age can lead to a higher falling risk and rate of diseases. On the other hand, aerobic-type exercise positively influences the body composition and hyperlipidemia in the elderly. Therefore, this study examined the effects of aquarobic training for 12 weeks on the body composition and blood lipid levels in obese old women. The subjects (n = 31, body fat: 33.42%) completed a 12 week water based aerobic training at 12 - 13 of Borg Scale of intensity (three times per week, each session: an hour). The body composition was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (Inbody 770-Biospace, Seoul, Korea) and the concentrations of blood lipids (high-density lipids cholesterol (HDL), low-density lipids cholesterol (LDL), triglyceride (TG) total cholesterol (TC)) were determined at pre and post training. A paired t-test was used for data analysis with ${\alpha}=0.05$. In the results, the body composition (% body fat (p < 0.05) and waist circumference (p < 0.05)) were reduced significantly. The LDL (p < 0.05), TG (p < 0.001) and TC (p < 0.05) were reduced significantly. In conclusion, a 12 week aquarobic exercise program helps improve the body composition and concentrations of serum lipids. Therefore, aquarobic exercise can enhance lipolysis using fat as energy to induce an improvement of the body composition and induce hyperlipidemia.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of smartphone apps applying BodyThink program on BMI, percentage of body fat, skeletal muscle rate, body image, and self-esteem of adolescent girls. Methods: Sixty-eight high school girls with a BMI of over $25kg/m^2$ were recruited to participate in this study. Girls from four schools were divided into two groups: the experimental group, which used the smartphone apps applying BodyThink program, and the control group, which used smartphone apps and small group counseling. The experimental group received the BodyThink program 6 times, scheduled once a week, with each session lasting 40~50 minutes. Test measures were completed before and after the 6 week intervention period for all participants. Collected data was analyzed using Shapiro-Wilk test, descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2$ test, independent t-test, Mann-Whitney U test with the SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. Results: The girls in the experimental group significantly improved their results in BMI(Z=-1.67, p=.042), percentage of body fat (Z=-3.01, p=.001), skeletal muscle rate (t=-3.50, p<.001), and self-esteem (t=2.66, p=.005) after the program, compared to the girls in the control group. Conclusion: Mobile applications applying psychological and emotional intervention programs have the potential to be effective alternative methods to improve the body composition and self-esteem of obese adolescent girls.
The obesity is the matter of the energy balance in essential. The energy balance in human body is energy expenditure subtracted from energy intake. The energy intake is mainly supplied by carbohydrates, proteins and lipids in food, and the energy expenditure is composed of basal metabolic rate or resting energy expenditure, physical activity and thermogenesis including diet-induced thermogenesis. The resting energy expenditure is measured by direct calorimetry and indirect calorimetry. Generally we can simply use predictive equation with the variables of weight, height, age and fat-free mass to yield metabolic rate. But there is discrepancy between the estimate and real metabolic rate because the equations can not reflect individuality and environments. The resting energy expenditure is influenced by many factors but the fundamental factor is fat-free mass. We briefly reviewed the concept and evaluation of the energy balance, intake and expenditure, which are important parts in the study of obesity. Finally, we surveyed the correlation between metabolic rate and obesity and suggested applicable herb medication to increase metabolic rate.
The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate the Self Efficacy Promotion and Exercise Program to prevent of obesity and cardiovascular diseases for the kidney transplant recipients. The subjects were selected randomly among the patients who underwent kidney transplantations at one major transplantation hospital in Seoul, Korea. This study ws carried out between November 23, 1999 and February 15, 2000. The subjects in this study consisted of 16 patients who had kidney transplantations between 1 month and 12 months ago prior to this study. They were all on steroids therapy and did not take any physical exercise regularly. The subjects received the self efficacy promotion and exercise program for 12 weeks which contained self efficacy promotion education and exercise program. The weight, body fat rate, exercise time and cardiopulmonary function were evaluated before the experiment and after the experiment. The results were as follows: 1. After the experiment, the weight was significantly decreased than that of before the experiment(p=.0001). 2. After the experiment, the body fat rate was significantly decreased than that of before the experiment(p=.0010). 3. After the experiment, the exercise time was significantly increased than that of before the experiment(p=.0002). 4. After the experiment, the absolute VO2 was significantly increased than that of before the experiment(p=.0008). 5. After the experiment, the relative VO2 was significantly increased than that of before the experiment(p=.0002). This study showed that the self efficacy promotion and exercise program was effective. So it would be expected that this self efficacy promotion and exercise program could be applied as an effective independent nursing intervention widely in prevention of obesity and cardiovascular diseases for kidney transplant recipients.
