  • These days, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission method is widely used for broadband communication systems. The OFDM, which uses sine waves as orthogonal basis functions, is one of the orthogonal waveform modulation techniques. In this paper, we investigate a wavelet packet modulation method which uses wavelet packets instead of sine waves as the basis functions. The wavelet packets may have different patterns in two dimensional time-frequency domain, and we can design the packets appropriate for the channel environments with much flexibility. In this paper, we investigate the characteristics of the wavelet packet modulation as one of the multicarrier modulation methods, And we illustrate by simulations that narrowband interference can be reduced effectively by control the bandwidth of the wavelet packets.

  • The detection of ship wakes image can demonstrate substantial information regarding on a ship, such as its tonnage, type, direction, and speed of movement. Consequently, the wake target recognition is a favorable way for ship identification. This paper proposes a Local Binary Pattern (LBP) approach to extract image features (wakes) for training an Improved Back Propagation Artificial Neural Network (IBPANN) to identify ship speed. This method is applied to sort and recognize the ship wakes of five different speeds images, the result shows that the detection accuracy is satisfied as expected, the average correctness rates of wakes target recognition at the five speeds may be achieved over 80%. Specifically, the lower ship's speed, the better accurate rate, sometimes it's accuracy could be close to 100%. In addition, one significant feature of this method is that it can receive a higher recognition rate than the nearest neighbor classification method.

  • MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play roles in the clinic, both as diagnostic and therapeutic tools. The identification of relevant microRNAs is critically required for ovarian cancer because of the prevalence of late diagnosis and poor treatment options currently. To identify miRNAs involved in the development or progression of ovarian cancer, we analyzed gene expression profiles downloaded from Gene Expression Omnibus. Comparison of expression patterns between carcinomas and the corresponding normal ovarian tissues enabled us to identify 508 genes that were commonly up-regulated and 1331 genes that were down-regulated in the cancer specimens. Function annotation of these genes showed that most of the up-regulated genes were related to cell cycling, and most of the down-regulated genes were associated with the immune response. When these differentially expressed genes were mapped to MiRTarBase, we obtained a total of 18 key miRNAs which may play important regulatory roles in ovarian cancer. Investigation of these genes and microRNAs should help to disclose the molecular mechanisms of ovarian carcinogenesis and facilitate development of new approaches to therapeutic intervention.

  • Iron-doped $Sn_{1-x}Fe_xO_2$ (x = 0.0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.33) thin films on Si(100) substrates and powders were prepared by a chemical solution process. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of the $Sn_{1-x}Fe_xO_2$ thin films and powders showed a polycrystalline rutile tetragonal structure. Thermo gravimetric (TG) - differential thermal analysis (DTA) showed the final weight loss above $430{^{\circ}C}$ for all powder samples. According to XRD Rietveld refinement of the powders, the lattice parameters and unit cell volume decreased with increasing Fe content. The magnetic properties were characterized using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy. The thin film samples with x = 0.1 and 0.2 showed paramagnetic properties but thin films with x = 0.33 exhibited ferromagnetic properties at room temperature. Mossbauer studies revealed the $Fe^{3+}$ valence state in the samples. The ferromagnetism in the samples can be interpreted in terms of the direct ferromagnetic coupling of ferric ions via an electron trapped in a bridging oxygen deficiency, which can be explained using the F-center exchange model.

  • The occurrence variations of decapods by season and depth off Oryuk Islets, Busan were investigated at seven stations in April and October 2009, July 2010 and January 2011. Decapods were collected by SCUBA diving at 5 m and 10 m depths. 46 species belonging to 18 families in 3 orders were identified. Pilumnus minutus, Pugettia intermedia, Pachycheles stevensii, and Paguristes japonicus were dominant species, comprising 73.0% of total decapods. P. minutus and P. intermedia were abundant in all seasons (except summer) while P. stevensii and P. japonicus were abundant in fall and summer. Dominant species were divided into three groups (resident species, seasonal species and temporary species) on the basis of their occurrence patterns. P. minutus and P. intermedia were resident species while P. stevensii, P. japonicus were temporary species. The species number, density and biomass of decapods were fluctuated by seasons. They were highest in fall and lowest in winter. This study implied that the variations of species number and density of decapods were significantly related with seasonal change of water temperature.

  • We propose a digital watermarking technique using a computer generated hologram. The proposed method uses two random patterns separated from the computer generated hologram (CGH). One of those is embedded into the original image as hidden watermark information and then the reconstructed image can be obtained by an optical decoding algorithm with the other one as a decoding key. We analyze an occlusion of the watermarked image that is the original image containing the hidden pattern. The embedding process is performed digitally and reconstruction optically Computer simulation and an optical experiment are shown in support of the proposed technique.

  • To obtain some information on the change of antioxidant components of seeds during grain filling stage as affected by the sowing dates, lignan compounds were investigated according to days of flowering under different sowing dates. Sesamin and sesamolin contents showed significantly different by days of flowering and varieties. Both of sesamin and sesamolin content increased after flowering and reached highest at 40 days of flowering, but they started to decrease thereafter, Sesamin and sesamolin contents of sesame seeds changed with sowing dates. Generally, late sowing date of May 30 showed relatively higher accumulation rate of sesamin and sesamolin contents rather than other sowing dates, but overall patterns were a little different by varieties and lignan compounds. In Yangbaekkae, sesamin and sesamolin contents showed relatively higher at sowing date of May 30, but Yanghuckkae showed higher sesamin and sesamolin contents till 20 days of flowering when sowing date of May 30, but it showed to change that both lignan contents were relatively higher under sowing date of May 10.

  • It is well knowns that based on the CSP (Common Spatial Pattern) algorithm, the linear projection of an EEG (Electroencephalography) signal can be made to spaces that optimize the discriminant between two patterns. Sharing disadvantages from linear time invariant systems, CSP suffers from the non-stationary nature of EEGs causing the performance of the classification in a BCI (Brain-Computer Interface) system to drop significantly when comparing the training data and test data. The author has suggested a simple idea based on the parallel model of CSP filters to improve the performance of BCI systems. The model was tested with a simple CSP algorithm (without any elaborate regularizing methods) and a perceptron learning algorithm as a classifier to determine the improvement of the system. The simulation showed that the parallel model could improve classification performance by over 10% compared to conventional CSP methods.

  • Osteocalcin (OC), a marker of bone turnover, displays patterns in relation to physiological and genetic factors. Here, we present an association study in a population of Chinese Holstein cattle (n = 24) with OC serum concentration as a phenotypic trait. We hypothesised that OC status is associated with phylogeny, vitamin D serum level and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was used as an unlinked marker to examine phylogeny and linkage to measured phenotypic traits of vitamin D and OC status. Following an association study with OC serum variability as the trait, genotyping of SNPs (n = 27) in OC-related genes was performed. Candidate SNPs were chosen in genes with an emphasis on the vitamin D and vitamin K pathways. Multivariant factor analysis revealed a correlation between vitamin D serum concentration and a SNP in the gene GC (rs43338565), which encodes a vitamin D-binding protein, as well as between a SNP in NFATc1 (rs42038422) and OC concentration. However, univariate analysis revealed that population structure, vitamin D serum levels and SNPs were not significant determinants of OC status in the studied group.
