We have investigated the electro-optical characteristics and reliability of LEDs with the Indium-Tin-Oxide (ITO) electrodes formed by different deposition methods: electron beam evaporation, sputtering, and hybrid method of electron beam evaporation and subsequent sputtering. The deposition method of the ITO electrode has significant influence on the electro-optical characteristics and reliability of LEDs. The LEDs with the ITO electrodes formed by sputtering and electron beam evaporation have problems caused by sputtering damage and increased electrical resistance, respectively, and the problems have been solved by the hybrid method.
The purpose of this study was to determine optimum conditions for the cultivation of Tetraselmis suecica (T. suecica) under illumination of four different types of LEDs (i.e., blue, red, white, and mixed). Initial cell concentration was $4{\times}10^4$ cells/mL and temperature of reactor was maintained between 21-$24^{\circ}C$. Specific growth rates were 0.72 $day^{-1}$(white), 0.58 $day^{-1}$(red), 0.49 $day^{-1}$(mixed), and 0.49 $day^{-1}$(blue). Thus, white LEDs was used for the cultivation of T. suecica. Tests with white LEDs under different light intensity, which was conducted to determine optimum light intensity of white LEDs, showed that 9,000 lux of illumination resulted in fastest cell growth and greatest cell concentrations. To avoid shadow effects by dense cell populations, aeration was performed. Cell concentration increased 3.8 times when aeration was used.
BACKGROUND: Plant factory system of an artificial light type using Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs), fluorescent light, or metal halide lamp instead of sun light is an ultimated method for plant production without any pesticides regardless of seasonal changes. The plant factory is also completely isolated from outside environmental conditions such as a light, temperature, or humidity compared to conventional greenhouse. Light-environment control such as a quality or quantity in the plant factory system is essential for improving the growth and development of plant species. However, there was little report that the effects of various light qualities provided by LEDs on Ledebouriella seseloides growth under the plant factory system. METHODS AND RESULTS: Ledebouriella seseloides seedlings transplanted at urethane sponge were grown in the plant factory system of a horizontal type with LED artificial lights for 90 days. Yamazaki solution for hydroponic culture of the seedlings was regularly irrigated by the deep flow technique (DFT) system on the culture gutters. Electrical Conductivity (EC) and pH of the solution was recorded at 1.4 ds/m and 5.8 in average, respectively during the experimental period. Number of unfolded leaves, leaf length, shoot fresh and dry weight of the seedlings were three times measured in every 30 days after beginning of the experiment. Blue LEDs, red LEDs, and fluorescent lights inside the plant factory were used as light sources. Conventional fluorescent lamps were considered as a control. In all the treatment, light intensity was maintained at $100{\mu}mol/m^2/s$ on the culture bed. Fresh weight of the seedlings was 3.7 times greater in the treatment with the mixture radiation of fluorescent light and blue+red LEDs (1:3 in energy ratio; Treatment FLBR13) than in fluorescent light treatment (Treatment FL). In FLBR13 treatment, dry weight per seedling was two times greater than in FL or BR11 treatment of blue+red LEDs (1:3 in energy ratio; Treatment BR11) during the culture period. Increasing in number of unfolded leaves was also significantly affected by the FLBR13 treatment comparing with BR11 treatment. CONCLUSION(S): Hydroponic culture of Ledebouriella seseloides seedlings was successfully achieved in the plant factory system with mixture lights of blue, red LEDs and fluorescent lights. Shoot growth of the seedlings was significantly promoted by the FLBR13 with the mixture radiation of fluorescent light, blue, and red LEDs under 1:3 mixture ratio of blue and red LEDs during the experimental period compared to conventional light conditions.

Bacillus subtilis B22, a chemotrophic and aerobic bacterial strain was isolated from homemade kimchi, identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. B22 was primarily screened by biochemical, carbon source utilization tests. B22 was used to produce pectinase and ${\beta}$-glucosidase by submerged fermentation under different light sources. B22 was incubated in pectin media and basal media (pH 7.0) under blue, green, red and white light-emitting diodes (LEDs), fluorescent white light, and in darkness at $37^{\circ}C$, orbital shaker 150 rpm for 24 hours. Fermentation under blue LEDs maximized pectinase production ($71.59{\pm}1.6U/mL$ at 24 h) and ${\beta}$-glucosidase production ($56.31{\pm}1.6U/mL$ at 24 h). Further, the production of enzyme increased to pectinase ($156{\pm}1.28U/mL$) and ${\beta}$-glucosidase ($172{\pm}1.28U/mL$) with 3% glucose as a carbon source. Activity and stability of the partially purified enzymes were higher at pH 6.0 to 8.0 and $25-55^{\circ}C$. The effect on the metal ions $Na^+$ and $K^+$ and (moderateactivity) $Mn^{2+}$ and $Ni^{2+}$ increased activity, while $Hg^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Fe^{2+}$, and $Fe^{2+}$ inhibited activity. EDTA, phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride and 5,5-dithiobis (2-nitrobenzoicacid) reduced activity, while tetrafluoroethylene and 1,10-phenanthroline inhibited activity. The amylase was highly tolerant of the surfactants TritonX-100, Tween-20, Tween-80 and compatible with organic solvents methanol, ethanol, isoamylalcohol, isopropanol, t-butylalcohol and the oxidizing agents hydrogen peroxide, sodium perborate and sodium hypochlorite, although potassium iodide and ammonium persulfate reduced activity. These properties suggest utility of pectinase and ${\beta}$-glucosidase produced by B. subtilis B22 under blue LED-mediated fermentation for industrial applications.

In order to understand the influence of light artifact discoloration, priority must be given to the reaction characteristics of the light the materials constituting the product. In this study, we focus on two representative medium, animal glue and linseed oil which constitute the colored layer of the painting relics. This study is based on an accelerated degradation test using two types of light emitting diods (LEDs) with different wavelength characteristics. In the experiments, discoloration appeared markedly in the animal glue and linseed oil under accelerated aging test conditions using Blue LED. Among the two types of LEDs, the degree of discoloration of the material was much higher with the Blue LED having the total radiation flux (mW). This indicates that the discoloration of painting artifacts such as animal glue and linseed oil is more significantly influenced by the total radiation flux (mW) of the light source than the total luminous flux (lm).
Various light sources including LEDs (Light emitting diodes) affecting on shoot growth was examined using in vitro shoots of E. pellita. Generally, it appeared that ventilation treatment was the most important factor affecting on normal shoot growth, irrespective of irradiation sources. Ventilation resulted in better performance of the cultures under 100% blue LED radiation. These include better shoot growth, more number of leaves, more number of internodes, more number of axillary buds, and heavier dry matters. The highest total chlorophyll content was obtained under both cool-white fluorescent lamps and R5B5 (50% red LED + 50% blue LED). The value was $24.5{\mu}g/g$ and $20.1{\mu}g/g$, respectively. In addition, ventilation resulted in higher carotenoid content in all irradiation sources except 100% red LED radiation. In conclusion, shoot growth of E. pellita could be reached maximum by ventilation under R5B5 (50% red LED + 50% blue LED).
The demand for the fresh leaf of hooker chive, which is mainly used as functional roots and contains dietary sulfur or saponin, is increasing, but the leaves are only harvested 3-4 times per year under conventional field conditions. A plant factory system with different light qualities or intensities was applied for year-round production of the fresh leaves. Hooker chive (Allium hookeri) roots were hydroponically cultured under the plant factory with a mixture of blue plus red LEDs (Light-Emitting Diodes) and fluorescent lights for 50 weeks. Maximum leaf growth was attained with the 1.5 dS/m EC in the culture medium under the plant factory. The average leaf and shoot numbers of hooker chive grown hydroponically under a mixture of 200 µmol/m2/s LEDs increased by 147% and 140%, respectively compared to those under 100 µmol/m2/s LEDs at the 10th harvest. The leaf length of hooker chive grown under the LEDs treatment with the lowest light intensity significantly increased by 27% compared with the natural light treatment at the 10th harvest. However, there was no significant difference in leaf pigmentation between natural and 200 µmol/m2/s LEDs treatments. Plant factory with the mixture LEDs of blue and red lights can be applied for year-round production of hooker chive fresh leaves to ensure a stable supply of leafy vegetable throughout the year.
The effects of red, blue, and far-red light by illumination of light emitting diodes (LEDs) on growth, morphogenesis and eleutheroside contents of in vitro plantlets of Eleutherococcus senticosus were examined. As a control, plantlets were grown under a broad spectrum white fluorescent lamp (16/8 h illumination). The length of plantlets grown under the red/blue LEDs was taller than those under fluorescent lamps. Leaf area, root length and fresh weight of plantlets were highest under blue light compared to other kinds of light sources. Chlorophyll contents in plantlets grown under fluorescent lamps were higher than those in plantlets grown under LED illumination. Production of eleuthroside B and E in plantlets was highest under blue LED. However, production of eleuthroside E1 was highest under fluorescent lamps. These results suggest that plant growth and eleuthroside accumulation can be controlled by wave length of light under LED illumination system.

This study examined the criteria for efficient LEDs used throughout the experiment of an LED with another light color growth to be used in a plant factory. The experiment was confirmed by measuring the Red-LED, Blue-LED, plant growth, and amount of carbon reduction in a White-LED environment. The white-LED showed a similar growth trend to the Red-LED. Blue-LED showed the lowest growth. Measurements of the carbon dioxide levels, showed that the Red-LED and blue LED produced the lowest levels. The combination of the ratio of the LED showed four Red-LEDs and one blue LED to be the higher of the two. In addition, three Red-LED and one Blue-LED produced equal growth to that of the white-LED. In addition, as much as possible, red is the light color that obtains the result suitable for plant factories.
