  • Lighting emitting diodes of n-ZnO/MQW/p-GaN structure are fabricated and investigated. To realize this LED structure, n-ZnO/MQW/p-GaN are grown by MOCVD. At several bias voltages, blue-green light is emitted from the ZnO mesa edge. However, the emission is restricted near the mesa edge. It is seen that the hole current does not spread well. It is because conductivity of p-GaN is extremely small. The break down voltage of the device is small compared to conventional InGaN/GaN LEDs. It is seen that ZnO columnar grain boundaries act as leakage current paths and non-radiative recombination center.

  • Flame spray pyrolysis was applied to improve the photoluminescence characteristics of blue-emitting $Sr_5(PO_4)_3Cl:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor particles with high brightness for the application to LED phosphor. $Sr_5(PO_4)_3Cl:Eu^{2+}$ prepared from conventional spray pyrolysis had poor PL intensity than that of commercial products under long-wavelength ultraviolet(UV). $Sr_5(PO_4)_3Cl:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor particles prepared by flame spray pyrolysis had PL intensity as same as that of commercial products under long-wavelength UV. Hollow morphology and porous structure of the particles prepared by the flame spray pyrolysis disappeared after posttreatment. Even though the $Sr_5(PO_4)_3Cl:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor particles prepared by the flame spray pyrolysis had irregular shape, the particles had dense structure and clear surface property.

  • We report on white light emission from a light emitting diode(LED) prepared by blending a red emitting copolymer, m-SiPh PPV-co-MEH PPV, and a blue emitting polyvinylcarbazole (PVK). White light emission was realized when the weight ratio of the m-SiPh PPV-co-MEH PPV : PVK equals to 1 : 30, in which the commission Internationale de L'Eclairage coordinates were x=0.3266 and y=0.3438.

  • The sapphire wafer was polished by the implementation of the surface machining technology based on nano-tribology, The removal process has been performed by grinding, lapping and chemical-mechanical polishing. For the chemical mechanical polishing process, the chemical reaction between the slurry and sapphire wafer was investigated in terms of the change of Zeta-potential between two materials. The Zeta-potential was -4.98 mV without the slurry in deionized water and was -37.05 mV for the slurry solution. By including the slurry into the deionized water the Zeta-potential -29.73 mV, indicating that the surface atoms of sapphire become more repulsive to be easy to separate. The average roughness of the polished surface of sapphire wafer was ranged to 1∼4$\AA$.

  • The effect of n-electrode patterns on the current distribution in active region is investigated in GaN-based blue vertical light emitting diodes (VLEDs). A 3-dimension circuit model is adopted to analyze the current flow patterns in VLEDs. We had fabricated VLEDs having different n-electrode patterns, measured their current-voltage characteristics, and compared to the numerical simulation. It turns out that the current spreading in VLEDs is strongly dependent on the n-electrode pattern. Some design guidelines for n-electrode patterns to produce uniform current injection are presented.

  • BaMg$Al_{10}O_{17}$ (BAM) co-doped with $Eu^{2+}$ and $Mn^{2+}$ was synthesized in a solid-state reaction and their luminescence properties were investigated as functions of the concentrations of the sensitizer and activator. BAM:$Eu^{2+}$ had a broad blue emission band at 450 nm and BAM:$Mn^{2+}$ exhibited green emission at 514 nm. The energy transfer from $Eu^{2+}$ to $Mn^{2+}$ was mainly of the resonance-type via an electric dipole-quadrupole interaction. Additionally, the addition of various fluxes such as $AlF_3$ and $BaF_2$ in the synthesis improves the moist and thermal stability. This is particularly important for the phosphor in white light emitting diodes (LEDs).

  • Recently, display technology has been focused in regard with with color reproduction, contrast ratio, image resolution and color bit. Among these technologies, the color reproducibliity of White, Red, Green, and Blue is associated with the TV plaform and is expressed as a major technology. Major TV platforms are divided into three categories since 2015, including LCD-based phosphor coverted LED BLU technology, QD sheet technology using nano-sized quantum dots, and OLED technology. In this paper, we describe the color reproducibility definition and background, luminescent materials with wide color gamut, color reproducibility of TV display performance, and discuss about next luminescent materials.

  • The objective of this study was carried out to elucidate the effect of LEDs (light emitting diodes) irradiation in relation to early growth and inorganic elements in leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. 'Chung Chi Ma'). In morphological changes of leaves, shoot elongation and hypocotyl length showed poor growth in red light irradiation, while the red+blue light irradiation induced shorter plant height and much greater leaf numbers resulting in increased fresh weight. In change of the Hunter's color and SPAD values, lettuce seedlings grown under in red+blue and fluorescent light irradiation had a higher $a^*$ value, otherwise SPAD values were not changed in these light irradiations. Interestingly, relative chlorophyll contents showed 1.8 times increased redness in the treatment of red+blue light irradiation. Inorganic element (N, Ca, Mg, Mn, and Fe) and ascorbic acid contents were increased in lettuce plants grown under LEDs light irradiation compared to those of lettuce grown under the fluorescent light which showed higher P and Mn contents. In conclusion, it is considered that red+blue light irradiation which stimulates growth and higher nutrient uptake in leaf lettuce could be employed in containers equipped with LEDs.

  • To identify Cochlodinium polykrikoides red tide from non-red tide water (satellite high chlorophyll waters) in the South Sea of Korea (SSK), we improved a spectral classification method proposed by Son et al.(2011) for the world first Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI). C. polykrikoides blooms and non-red tide waters were classified based on four different criteria. The first step revealed that the radiance peaks of potential red tide water occurred at 555 and 680 nm (fluorescence peak). The second step separated optically different waters that were influenced by relatively low and high contributions of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) (including detritus) to chlorophyll. The third and fourth steps discriminated red tide water from non-red tide water based on the blue-to-green ratio, respectively. After applying the red tide classification, the spectral response of C. polykrikoides red tide water, which is influenced by pigment concentration as well as CDOM (detritus), showed different slopes for the blue and green bands (lower slope at blue bands and higher slope at green bands). The opposite result was found for non-red tide water. This modified spectral classification method for GOCI led to increase user accuracy for C. polykrikoides and non-red tide blooms and provided a more reliable and robust identification of red tides over a wide range of oceanic environments than was possible using chlorophyll a concentration, or proposed red tide detection algorithms. Maps of C. polykrikoides red tide in SSK outlined patches of red tide covering the area near Naro-do and Tongyeong during the end of July and early of August, 2012 and extending into from Wan-do and Geoje-do during the middle of August, 2012.
