  • In an attempt to find a satisfactory environmental factors which facilitate abundant conidial production of Piriculariaoryzae Cav. on tomato juice media, various environmental factors were studied for their effect on sporulation and mycelial growth of the fungus. Those factors were conditions of irradiation, color of light, age of culture and pH of the media. l) Continuous exposure to fluorescent light (Mitsubish FL-20-35 W) produced more conidia and much mycelial growth than did intermittent photoperiods and darkness. 2) Of 3 cellophane filters and direct exposure to fluorescent light used, conidia were produced best under the direct exposure to the light. Conidial production in color filter conditions sequently decreased with red, yellow and blue. Growth of mycelium was not significantly different within colors. 3) Periodic irradiation of 12-hour unit brought about zones on mycelial growth no matter what the color filter was used. 4) Older cultures responding to the light were more stimulated by light than were the younger one in the conidia production, but maximum production of conidia was 48 hours of age in this case. 5) Color of the mycelial mat and the aerial mycelium seemed to have a close relation to the production of conidia. The more darkness of the mycelial mat was produced the more conidia and the much aerial mycelium was produced the least conidia. The color of mycelium was more dark under the continuous irradiation than continuous darkness, while the periodic irradiation showed intermediate effect. 6) The concentration of hydrogen ion for growth and sporulation of the fungus was investigated the ranges between 5 and 9. The best pH for the fungus was also noted at 7. whereas the below of pH 4 was not occurred any mycelial growth and sporulation.

  • A study was conducted to examine the effects of light quality on the growth and phytochemical contents of ice plant in a closed-type plant production system. Seeds were sown in a 128-cell plug tray using rockwool. The seedlings were then transplanted into a deep floating technique system with recirculating nutrient solution (EC $1.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, pH 6.5) in a closed-type plant production system. The nutrient solution was supplied at two weeks after transplanting with 2.0 mM NaCl concentration in all treatments for the development of the bladder cells. The three light sources with different light qualities used were as followed; FL (fluorescent lamps), combined RW LED (red:white = 7:3), and combined RBW LED (red:blue:white = 8:1:1) at $150{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ PPFD with a photoperiod of 14/10 hours (light/dark). The results showed that the FL treatment had the greatest growth enhancement effects on the leaf area and the fresh and dry weights of the shoots and roots. The SPAD values were significantly higher under the FL and RBW LED treatments, at 29.8 and 30.6, respectively. No significant difference was observed in salinity under all treatments. Chlorophyll fluorescence was significantly higher under the FL treatment. The total phenol content and antioxidant activity were the highest under the RBW LED treatment. The total flavonoid content was significantly higher under the RBW LED and FL treatments. Hence, the results indicate that the growth of ice plant was maximized under the FL treatment. The phytochemical contents were maximized under the RBW LED treatment.

  • The objective of this study was to compare the growth and light use efficiency of red leaf lettuce grown under three types of combined light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and fluorescent lamps (FL) in a closed-type plant production system. The eighteen days-old lettuce seedlings of red leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L., 'Jeokchima') were transplanted to the close-type plant production system equipped with three types of combined LEDs with red (R, 655 nm), blue (B, 456 nm), green (G, 515 nm), and white (W, 456 nm + 558 nm) (R:B=8:2, R:W:B=8:1:1, R:G:B=8:1:1) and FL. The seedlings were grown under normal growth conditions ($20^{\circ}C$, $181{\pm}4{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, 12 h photoperiod) for four weeks. Lettuce plants grown under FL had significantly higher leaf shape index than those under all LED treatments. Although growth of shoots and roots was not show any significant difference among LED treatments, all of the LED treatments induced about 34% higher shoot fresh weight than that of the FL. On the other hands, the total power consumption of FL was 145 kW for 4 weeks, while the mean value of LED treatments was 54 kW, which was about 3 times lower value than that of the FL. The light use efficiency based on dry matter in LED treatments was about 34 mg/W and this was about 3.5 times higher energy saving value than the FL. In conclusion, this study showed that irradiation of optimal combined LEDs in closed-type plant production systems can improve the lettuce growth as well as maximize in light use efficiency through energy saving than the FL.

  • This work was conducted to investigate the field growth and yield of the sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas) slips grown under different light emitting diodes (LEDs). Sweet potato cuttings of 3 cultivars ('Matnami', 'Shinhwangmi', and 'Yeonhwangmi') were cultivated under fluorescent lamp (FL) and several LEDs (PPF $150{\pm}5{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ at 20cm distance) in deep flow culture system for 20 days. The plants were acclimatized under sunlight for 10 days, and then cuttings (30cm length) were planted with $75{\times}25cm$ planting density on June 10th, covered with black vinyl film during growth period. Length and diameter of vine, number of root were excellent in the red plus blue (7:3) LED than the other treatments. At 30 days after planting, the survival rate in red plus blue (7:3) LED was significantly higher than that in FL and red LED, and it was not different among cultivars. Vine length, vine diameter, and number of node were not significant among LED light qualities and cultivars. After 120 days in the field cultivation, vine length, vine diameter, number of node, number of branch, and fresh weight of shoot were not significant among LED light qualities, but those except the number of branch showed significant differences among cultivars. Yield characteristics among LED light colors were not significant, but weight of storage root per plant, mean weight of storage root, and yield showed significant differences among cultivars. The yield per 10a in 'Matnami', and 'Yeonhwangmi' was significantly higher than that in 'Shinhwangmi'.

  • This study was carried out to compare the characteristics of seed germination and the first stage of growth in Cynanchum wilfordii (Maxim.) by different light conditions such ass fluorescent light, dark and light emitting diode (LED). There was not much difference from the germination rate of C. wilfordii (Maxim.) in different light conditions for 10 days. The highest of germination rate occurred over 91.11 percentage by LED red condition at $26^{\circ}C$. Also mean germination velocity and promptness index were represented the highest results of 2.3 ea/day and 52.67 under red light, respectively. But mean germination time under both LED red and blue light was represented low data that it takes over three days for germinating of seed. Even though handling both LED red and blue lights, the germination uniformity was not constant. These results may help our understanding of variations in germination characteristics for C. wilfordii (Maxim.) seeds treated under different light conditions.

  • In this study, research trends were investigated by examining important academic research on museum lighting that has been carried out in Korea over the past 30 years. The aim was to highlight important studies conducted in Korea on material deterioration caused by museum lighting and to examine the current status of research on LED light sources to provide direction for future research. The ultimate goal of studies on museum lighting is to improve the long-term conservation effects, and this study examined the latest light sources of each era. Prior to the 1990s, the effects of light sources on relics were assessed by investigating incandescent light bulbs and fluorescent lamps, the first museum exhibition lighting. Then in the 1990s, the introduction of halogen lamps and HID lamps led to the analysis of the characteristics of a light source itself and the introduction of illumination standards. In the 2000s, the lighting environment of museums was investigated based on the characteristics of the light sources that had been studied, and in terms of preservation, research was conducted not only to improve the conservation of relics but also to improve the sentiments of visitors. After 2010, LED lamps were introduced; therefore, material deterioration studies on LED lamps were expanded. During this period, enhancements to LED light sources were made, such as reducing the blue spike area and increasing color rendering. With the development of lighting used in museums and art galleries, the direction of the display preservation criteria has led to the need to prepare advanced standards, covering all aspects from the center of illumination to the consideration of the color of an object and the speed of radiation from the light source. Regular studies of museum lighting in a long-term perspective should be planned to standardize the more advanced conditions of material discoloration.

  • In this paper, the white organic LED with two-wavelength was fabricated using the NPB of blue emitting material and a series of orange color fluorescent dye(Rubrene) by vacuum evaporation processes. The structure of white OLED was ITO/NPB$(200{\AA})$NPB:Rubrene$(300{\AA})$/BCP$(100{\AA})/Alq_3(100{\AA})/Al(1000{\AA})$ and the doping concentration of Rubrene was 0.75 wt%. We obtained the white OLED with CIE color coordinates were x=0.3327 and y=0.3387, and the maximum EL wavelength of the fabricated white organic light-emitting device was 560 nm at applied voltage of 11 V, which was similar to NTSC white color with CIE color coordinates of x=0.3333 and y=0.3333. The turn-on voltage is 1 V, the light-emitting him-on voltage is 4 V. We were able to obtain an excellent maximum external quantum efficiency of 0.457 % at an applied voltage of 18.5 V and current density of $369mA/cm^2$.

  • Lisianthus (Eustoma grandiflorum) is relatively sensitive to temperature and light conditions. For year round production of good quality potted plants and energy saving, it is necessary to understand the growth and flowering response to the combined conditions of these environmental factors. This study was conducted to examine the growth and flowering responses to temperature, photoperiod, and light intensity during the post-seedling stage. 'El Paso Deep Blue' lisianthus plants with four true leaf pairs were grown in growth chambers maintained at average daily temperatures (ADT) of 14, 20, and $26^{\circ}C$ and provided with three photosynthetic photon fluxes [PPF; 100, 200, and $400{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$] for 8 (08:00-16:00) and 16 hours (08:00-24:00) by fluorescent and incandescent lamps, resulting in four daily light integrals (DLI): about 3, 6 (two photoperiods), 12 (two photoperiods), and $24mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$. After treatment for three weeks followed by growth for one week in a greenhouse of $20{\pm}3^{\circ}C$, growth and development were measured. Higher temperature, higher PPF, and longer photoperiod promoted plant growth and flowering; however the impacts of PPF and photoperiod were smaller than those of temperature. As ADT and DLI increased, the number of leaves, number of flowers, lateral shoot length, and shoot dry weight increased. An increase of about $1mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$ DLI could constitute an increase of 0.40 to $0.76^{\circ}C$ ADT depending on these crop characteristics when ADT and DLI are above $20^{\circ}C$ and $12mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$, respectively. Therefore, growers can select a regimen of heating or supplemental lighting without delaying harvesting time or decreasing crop quality.

  • Objectives: The objective of this study was to investigate whether the ammonia nitrogen concentration of aqueous samples such as drinking water can be determined by measuring the saturation of the samples colored by indophenol method. Methods: A color saturation measurement system was constructed by connecting a notebook computer to an image acquisition device composed of a PC camera and a light source, and was then used to measure the saturation of samples colored by blue indophenol complex. Results: Between two available light sources, a fluorescent lamp was selected due to its demonstrating better linearity between color saturation and ammonia nitrogen concentration. Prediction by quadratic regression was more accurate than by linear regression, and prediction by quadratic regression in the concentration range of 0.1-1.0 $mg/l$ was more accurate than in the concentration range of 0.0-1.0 $mg/l$. Regression-based predictions over 0.25 $mg/l$, 0.55 $mg/l$ and 0.75 $mg/l$ concentrations were implemented both by spectrophotometric method and by measuring color saturation. In the case of 0.25 $mg/l$, the predicted concentration by spectrophotometric method was $0.256{\pm}0.0076\;mg/l$ and the predicted concentration by measuring color saturation was $0.246{\pm}0.0086\;mg/l$ (p=0.051). In the case of 0.55 $mg/l$, they were $0.561{\pm}0.0068\;mg/l$ and $0.564{\pm}0.0166\;mg/l$ (p=0.660). In the case of 0.75 $mg/l$, they were $0.755{\pm}0.0139\;mg/l$ and $0.762{\pm}0.0088\;mg/l$ (p=0.215). Conclusions: There were no statistically significant differences (p>0.05) between the data from the two methods in all three of the concentrations. Therefore, the color saturation measurement method proposed in this paper may be considered applicable for determining the ammonia nitrogen concentration of aqueous samples such as drinking water.
