Objectives : The present study was designed to investigate the anti-diabetic effects of Mori Folium (Morus alba L. of Moraceae) extract (MFE) on high fat diet (HFD) and streptozotocin (STZ)-induced type II diabetes mellitus in mice. Methods : The mice (C57BL/6J) were fed HFD for 8 weeks and then was induced with a single injection of STZ (75 mg/kg). The diabetic mice were divided into four groups [(STD, HFD, HFD + MFE and HFD + quercetin (QUR)] and administered with MFE or OUR for 4 weeks. Fasting blood glucose, lipid profile (triglycerides and cholesterol etc.), glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), insulin and leptin were measured every 2 weeks. Results : Body weight gain was lower in the MFE and QUR groups than HFD group. The fasting blood glucose was lower in the MFE and QUR groups. Oral glucose and insulin tolerance were decreased in the MFE and QUR groups. The levels of serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL cholesterol were reduced in the MFE and QUR groups. The HDL cholesterol was much higher in the MFE and QUR groups than HFD group. The levels of GOT, GPT and atherogenic index were decreased in the MFE and QUR groups. The serum insulin and leptin concentrations were reduced in the MFE and QUR groups. Conclusions : These results showed that MFE could decrease blood glucose level and lead to an amelioration in dyslipidemia states on HFD/STZ-induced type II diabetes mellitus in mice.
This study was carried out to determine whether a short-tenn zinc supplementation contributes to beneficial changes in glycemic control among type 2 diabetic patients. Seventy-six diabetic subjects and 72 normal adults participated in this study. Subjects were divided into supplemented and control groups. Forty-four diabetic patients and 34 normal subjects were supplemented with 50 mg zinc daily as zinc gluconate for 4 weeks. Zinc status was assessed from fasting plasma levels and urinary excretion. The effects of zinc supplementation on fasting blood glucose, $HbA_{1c}$, insulin, and C-peptide were measured at the beginning of the study and after 4 weeks of supplementation. The changes in glycemic control indicators were compared between diabetic groups, classified by baseline $HbA_{1c}$ levels, and by diabetic duration. At baseline, the incidence of marginal zinc deficiency in the diabetic group, as determined by plasma zinc level, was approximately twice as high as in the normal adult group. The changes of $HbA_{1c}$ concentration, and fasting blood glucose following supplementation were not statistically significant in diabetic subjects. In normal subjects, a significant decrease of $HbA_{1c}$ occurred only in the zinc supplemented group. No significant changes were observed for serum insulin and C-peptide in diabetic as well as normal subjects. However, when the changes were compared by baseline $HbA_{1c}$ level, we found that diabetic subjects with $HbA_{1c}\;{\geq}\;7.5%$ showed significantly improved levels of $HbA_{1c}$ and fasting glucose after Zn supplementation. While such improvement in fasting blood glucose was significant among diabetics with shorter diabetic duration, significant levels of increase in serum insulin and C-peptide were observed in zinc supplemented subjects with longer diabetic duration. Fasting blood glucose was significantly decreased, whereas serum insulin and C-peptide were increased in diabetics with marginal zinc status. Therefore, we suggest that Zn supplementation for a short-term period may improve glycemic control in diabetic patients with higher $HbA_{1c}$ levels and marginal zinc status.

This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of hypoglycemic yogurt as a clinical test with person both who have diabetes and who don't have diabetes. Diabetes is a disease caused by unused and accumulated glucoses produced via the foods digestion due to the lack of insulin or lower tissue reaction to insulin. Patients with diabetes or complications of diabetes are on the rise annually. For the therapy and prevention of diabetes, a yogurt made from functional materials such as insulin-resistant FK-23 lactic acid bacteria, Pinitol, edible fiber which delays glucose-absorption, extract powder of glucose-absorption-inhibitory white bean and low-caloric Erythritol and banaba extract is effective for reduce or restrain the blood glucose levels. The blood glucose levels after a meal of non-diabetic persons were lower after drinking a hypoglycemic yogurt than they after drinking general yogurt. The blood glucose levels after a meal of 10 diabetic patients were checked after drinking the yoghurt. As a result, 19 mg/dL, 30 mg/dL, 31 mg/dL of blood glucose levels decreased in 30 min, 60 min and 120 min respectively after drinking the yogurt. Blood glucose inhibition rates of 80 % of the tested patients also decreased. The blood glucose level of the diabetic patients having drunk the yogurt for 30 days consistently decreased into 59 mg/dL in 120 min after a meal.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of Aralia elata, Acanthopanacis cortex and Ulmus davidiana water extracts on blood hemoglobin, $HbA_{1c}$, levels and biomarkers in the streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Male Wistar rats divided into normal and diabetic groups. The diabetic groups subdivided into the control group (DM) and Araliaceae water extracts supplemented groups: Aralia elata (AE), Acanthopanacis cortex (AC) and Ulmus davidiana (UD). The extracts were supplemented in diet base on 11.42 g of raw Araliaceae/kg diet for 7 weeks. The diabetes was induced by injecting 572 (55 mg/kg B.W., i.p.) once 2 weeks before sacrifying. Relative weights of liver were significantly lowered in the DM group compared to the normal group, whereas those of kidney and heart were significantly increased in the DM group. Supplementation of the Araliaceae water extracts improved reduced liver weights in STZ-induced diabetic rats. Blood glucose level was significantly higher in the DM group than in the normal group, whereas insulin contents were significantly lowered in the DM groups. However, these parameters were normalized in the An, AC and UD supplemented groups, respectively. Blood hemoglobin and $HbA_{1c}$ levels were significantly higher in the DM group than in the normal group. When all of Araliaceae water extracts were supplemented to the diabetic rats lowered hemoglobin and $HbA_{1c}$ levels. Red blood cell, white blood cell and Lymphocyte were significantly higher in the DM group than in the normal group. The supplementation of Araliaceae family water extracts significantly lowered these parameters compared to the DM group. MCV, MCH contents were declined in the DM group, while the supplementation of Aralia elata, Acanthopanacis cortex and Ulmus davidiana water extracts elevated of these contents in STZ-induced diabetic rats. Accordingly, these results indicate that Aralia elata, Aeanthopanacis corex and Ulmus davidiana water extracts would seem to improve the blood biomarkers in STZ-induced diabetic rats.
This study targeted 4,572 middle-aged women to examine the relationship between nutritional status and dietary inflammatory index according to blood glucose level using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Data were analyzed using complex survey chi-square, General Linear Model and logisitc regression in SPSS Win 25.0 program. Women with high blood glucose (normal blood sugar→diabetes) had high rates of obesity and blood TG/HDL-cholesterol ratio. On the other hand, the Mean Adequacy Ratio (10 nutrients) and the intake of anti-inflammatory foods: beans, seeds, mushrooms, and fruits, were lower in the diabetic category. When we analysed the association between blood glucose and the Dietary Inflammatory Index, the risk of pre-diabetes and diabetes was significantly higher in the most pro-inflammatory diet category (Q5) compared to the most anti-inflammatory diet category (Q1). These findings suggest that nutritional education emphasizing the intake of various foods should be effectively conducted effectively in order to improve blood glucose among middle-aged women.

Background: Dapagliflozin is an oral selective inhibitor of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2(SGLT2), the kidney transporter chiefly responsible for glucose reabsorption from the glomerular filtrate. Because this mechanism does not require the action of insulin, dapagliflozin rarely causes hypoglycemia. Dapagliflozin may affect blood glucose control as well as blood pressure and the body weight which are one of the cardiovascular disease risk factors. However, dehydration and ketoacidosis are reported as the side effects of the dapagliflozin treatment and the safety issues have been occurred. The aim of this study is to analyze the effectiveness and adverse events of dapagliflozin in Korean patients. Methods: From December 2014 to August 2015, we retrospectively reviewed the electronic medical records of type 2 diabetes patients who were prescribed dapagliflozin at Severance Hospital. Results: A total of 202 Korean patients were enrolled in this study. The effectiveness in the reduction of blood glucose was statistically significant(p<0.001). Dapagliflozin decreased 0.74% of HbA1c after 24 weeks. Significantly more participants achieved the target HbA1c level(HbA1c<7%) after 24 weeks(n=42, 35.3%) than before taking dapagliflozin(n=21, 17.6%). Blood pressure decreased 5.7 mmHg systolic blood pressure(SBP), 1.9 mmHg diastolic blood pressure(DBP) after 24 weeks. More than one quarter of participants(n=35, 29.4%) experienced weight loss. Most common adverse event was genitourinary symptoms. Conclusion: In this study, the effectiveness of dapagliflozin in improving glycemic control, blood pressure control, and weight loss was statistically significant. However, elderly and female patients, who have higher incidence of adverse events, should use dapagliflozin cautiously.
This study was conducted by surveying 616 male workers living in Ulsan City regarding their health status based on lifestyles such as alcohol consumption, smoking and exercising as well as physical measurements and biochemical tests. The average height, weight and BMI(body mass index, $kg/m^2$) of the subjects was 170.9cm, 70.2kg and 24.2, respectively. The rate of drinking was $80.9\%$ and the rate of smoking was $53.4\%$. Seventy four percent of subjects responded that they exercise regularly. The results of the blood biochemical tests revealed that the average hemoglobin concentration was 14.7g/dl, and the levels of GPT(glutamic pyruvic transaminase) and GOT (glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase) were 32.74unit/l, 26.99 unit/l, respectively. The average hemoglobin concentration for the subjects aged in the 50s was 14.39g/dl, which was significantly lower than those in the 20s(14.81g/dl), 30s(14.69g/dl) and 40s(14.73g/dl). The blood glucose level and the cholesterol level also increased with age. Also investigated was the blood pressure of the subjects increased with age,. and there was a significant increase(p < 0.05) for the subjects in the 50s compared to those in the 20s. The frequency of alcoholic beverages was significantly correlated with systolic/ diastolic blood pressure(p < 0.05) and $\gamma-GTP(gamma\;glutamyl\; transpeptidase)$(p<0.01). The duration of smoking showed a negative correlation(p < 0.05) with the hemoglobin and positive correlations with diastolic blood pressure, cholesterol and $\gamma-GTP(p<0.01)$. The study shows that blood pressure, blood glucose level, cholesterol level, GOT, GPT and $\gammaGTP$ level, increase with age, which indicates higher possibility of degenerative diseases, calling for nutritional education in terms of advisable lifestyles regarding eating habits, alcohol consumption, smoking and regular exercise.
The hypoglycemic and metabolic effects of Commelina communis L. extract were investigated in alloxan-diabetic rats. The increased blood glucose level in the diabetic rats was significantly lowered and the loss of body weight in the diabetic rats was recovered with the treatments of the crude extract. Administration of the extract elicited the significant increase of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity and liver weight which were decreased in the alloxan-treated rat serum and liver. On the other hand, the kidney weight and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity were increased in the alloxan treated rat kidney and were potentiated by the treatment of the extract. In both liver and kidney, together with serum, alkaline phosphatase and ATPase activities were increased in the alloxan diabetic rats and were not recovered, rather potentiated by the administration of the extract.
This study classified subjects aged 30 to 64 into normal group, impaired fasting glucose group, and diabetes mellitus patient group based on data from the 6th period of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013-2015). Skipping breakfast, lack of physical activity, inadequate sleep time, inadequate weight, excessive drinking, and current smoking are classified as a low health risk group when three or less items are present, and a high health risk group when three or more items are included. By classification, each item included in the physical measurement and biochemical analysis factors and health risk behavior factors was comparatively analyzed. As a result, in the normal group, impaired fasting glucose group, and diabetes group, the average age was higher in the group with high health risk factors than the group with low risk factors, and the male ratio was higher. Body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, triglyceride showed a significantly higher result. In the normal group, the fasting blood glucose level and total cholesterol level were also higher in group 2. Therefore, it is thought that it is necessary to control health risk behaviors through lifestyle changes in the normal group, fasting glucose disorder group, and diabetes group.

This study was conducted to evaluate the antihyperglycemic effects of three phytoestrogens, genistein, coumestrol, and enterolactone, in type 2 diabetic animals. Forty male C57BL/KsOlaHsd-db/db mice were used as a diabetic animal model. The animals were divided into four groups and fed a phytoestrogen-free AIN-76 diet (control), or one of three phytoestrogen-supplemented (3.75 mg/100 g diet) AIN-76 diets for six weeks. During the experimental period, fasting blood glucose levels were measured on week 0, 2, 5, and 6 of the experiment, and oral glucose tolerance tests were performed on the 5th week. After the experimental period, blood concentrations of HbA1c, insulin, and glucagon were measured, and hepatic glycogen content and glucose regulating enzyme activities were analyzed. Fasting blood glucose, HbA1c level, and the area under the blood glucose curve in the oral glucose tolerance test were significantly lower in all of the phytoestrogen-supplemented groups compared to the control group. Plasma glucagon levels were also significantly lower in all of the phytoestrogen-supplemented groups compared to the control group. Hepatic glycogen level was significantly higher in the coumestrol-supplemented group compared to the other groups. However, there were no significant differences in the activities of glucokinase and glucose-6-phosphatase between the groups. These results suggest that all of the three major phytoestrogens tested in the present study were effective in lowering blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetic animals. However, further studies need to be conducted to elucidate the exact mechanism for the hypoglycemic effects of phytoestrogens.
