Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) seeds are wellknown traditional oriental medicines that have long been used for the remedies of blood stasis and bone formation in east Asia. In this study, ethyl acetate (EtOAc) was used for extraction of the main chemical compounds from C. tinctorius seeds. Four major compounds were identified, acacetin, cosmosiin, N-feruloyl serotonin and N-(p-coumaroyl) serotonin. Each compound was evaluated for its inhibitory activity against the inflammatory process of macrophages. All compounds significantly inhibited production of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated nitric oxide (NO) and pro-inflammatory cytokines. The protein levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) were dramatically decreased by serotonins in a dose-dependent manner in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages. These results suggest that serotonin derivatives from safflower seeds may reduce inflammation-related diseases.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of brown seaweed (Undaria pinnatifida) by-product and seaweed fusiforme (Hizikia fusiformis) by-product supplementation on growth performance and blood profiles including serum immunoglobulin (Ig) in broilers. Fermentation of seaweeds was conducted by Bacillus subtilis and Aspergillus oryzae. In a 5-wk feeding trial, 750 one-d-old broiler chicks were divided into 5 groups, and were assigned to the control diet or experimental diets including control+0.5% brown seaweed (BS) by-product, control+0.5% seaweed fusiforme (SF) by-product, control+0.5% fermented brown seaweed (FBS) by-product, and control+0.5% fermented seaweed fusiforme (FSF) by-product. As a consequence, body weight gain (BWG) and gain:feed of seaweed by-product groups were clearly higher, when compared to those of control diet group from d 18 to 35 and the entire experimental period (p<0.05). In mortality rate, seaweed by-product groups were significantly lower when compared to control diet group during entire experimental period (p<0.05). However, Feed Intake of experimental diets group was not different from that of the control group during the entire experimental period. Whereas, Feed Intake of fermented seaweed by-product groups was lower than that of non-fermented seaweed groups (p<0.05). Total organ weights, lipids, and glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (GOT) of all treatment groups were not different from those of control group. However, glutamic pyruvate transaminase (GPT) of all treatment groups was higher than that of control group at d 17 (p<0.05). In case of serum Igs concentration, the concentration of IgA antibody in BS, SF, FSF treatment groups was significantly higher than in control group at d 35 (p<0.01). IgA concentration in FBS supplementation groups was negligibly decreased when compared to the control group. IgM concentration in the serums of all treatment groups was significantly higher than in control group (p<0.05) and in fermented seaweed by-product groups were much higher than in non-fermented seaweed groups (p<0.05). On the other hand, IgG concentrations in all treatment groups were lower than in control group (p<0.05). Taken together, our results suggest that by-product dietary supplementation of BS, SF, FBS, and FSF in poultry may provide positive effects of growth performance and immune response.
Background: A massive blood transfusion (MT) requires significant efforts by the Blood Bank. This study examined blood product use in MT and emergency O Rh Positive red cells (O RBCs) available directly for emergency patients from the Trauma Center in Ajou University Hospital. Methods: MT was defined as a transfusion of 10 or more RBCs within 24 hours. The extracted data for the total RBCs, fresh frozen plasma (FFP), platelets (PLTs, single donor platelets (SDP) and random platelet concentrates (PC)) issued from Blood Bank between March 2016 and November 2017 from Hospital Information System were reviewed. SDP was considered equivalent to 6 units of PC. Results: A total of 345 MTs, and 6233/53268 (11.7%) RBCs, 4717/19376 (24.3%) FFP, and 4473/94166 (4.8%) PLTs were used in MT (P<0.001). For the RBC products in MT and non-MT transfusions, 28.0% and 34.1% were group A; 27.1% and 26.0% were group B; 37.3% and 29.7% were group O, and 7.5% and 10.2% were group AB (P<0.001). The ratios of RBC:FFP:PLT use were 1:0.76:0.72 in MT and 1:0.31:1.91 in non-MT (P<0.001). A total of 461 O RBCs were used in 36.2% (125/345) of MT cases and the number of O RBCs transfused per patient ranged from 1 to 18. Conclusion: RBCs with the O blood group are most used for MT. Ongoing education of clinicians to minimize the overuse of emergency O RBCs in MT is required. A procedure to have thawed plasma readily available in MT appears to be of importance because FFP was used frequently in MT.
Hypoglycemic effect of onion skin extract in vitro and in vivo was investigated. A methanol extract of onion skin inhibited yeast $\alpha$-glucosidase with an $IC_{50}$ of 0.159 mg/mL. A single oral administration of the onion skin extract (500 mg/kg) significantly lowered the postprandial area under the glucose response curve to starch (1 g/kg, p<0.05). Three-week-old db/db mice were fed an AIN-93G diet or a diet supplemented with a 0.5% onion skin extract for 7 weeks after a 1-week adaptation period. Consumption of onion skin extract significantly reduced the levels of plasma glucose, insulin, and blood glycated hemoglobin as compared with the control group (p<0.05). These findings suggest that onion skin is effective in controlling hyperglycemia in animal models of type 2 diabetes mellitus, at least in part by inhibiting $\alpha$-glucosidase activity.
In this experiment, three different diets were produced to investigate the effects of Jeju native chicken meat, from chickens that were fed a tangerine by-product, on physiological activities in rats. The first diet did not contain any chicken (TS), the second diet contained 10% chicken that had not been fed the tangerine by-product (T0), and the third diet contained 10% that had been fed the by-products (T1). These diets were provided to 11-week-old male rats for four weeks. Weight gain, feed intake, feed efficiency, liver, kidney, and epididymis fat weights were not significantly different among the TS, T0, and T1 groups. Total lipid, triglycerides, and cholesterol levels in the liver were significantly lower in T0 and T1 than in TS (p<0.05). And total lipid, phospholipid, triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, DL+VLDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol/total cholesterol, and atherogenic index levels in the blood serum were similar between T0 and T1, which did not present any significant differences. The feed containing the tangerine by-product did not cause any statistically significant differences in serum protein, glucose, or hemoglobin. Finally, T0 and T1 showed similar trends in terms of $\gamma$-GTP, ALT, AST, and ALP activities, which again did not present any statistically significant differences.

Purpose: This study mainly focuses on the patients treated with chemically stable radiopharmaceutical product $^{99m}Tc$-HMPAO (d,l-hexamethylpropylene amine oxime) which yielded reduced image quality due to a decreased brain extraction rate. $^{99m}Tc$-HMPAO will be examined further to determine whether this product may be accounted as a factor for this cause. Material and Methods: From January 2010 until December 2010, out of 272 patients who were all subjected to $^{99m}Tc$-HMPAO brain blood flow SPECT scans resulting from Cerebral Infarction; 23 patients(ages $55.3{\pm}9$, 21 males, 3 females) with decreased tissue extraction rate were examined in detail. The radiopharmaceutical product $^{99m}Tc$-HMPAO was used on patients with normal brain tissue exchange rate as well as those with reduced rate in order to prove its' chemical stability. The patients' age, sex, blood pressure, existence of diabetes, drug use, current health status, known side effects from CT/MRI, examination of the patients' past SPECT before/after images were accounted to determine the factors and correlations affecting the rate of blood tissue extractions. Result: After multiple linear regression analysis, there were no unusual correlations between the 6 factors excluding sex, and before/after examination images. Male subjects showed reduced brain tissue extraction rate than the females ($p$ > 0.05) 91.3% male, 8.7% female. Wilcoxon Matched-Pairs Signed-Ranks Test was used on the before/after images which yielded a value of 0.06, which did not indicate a significant amount of difference on the 2 tests ($p$ > 0.05). As a result, the before/after images indicated similar brain tissue extraction rates, and there were variations depending on the individual patient. Conclusion: The effects of the chemically stable radiopharmaceutical product $^{99m}Tc$-HMPAO depended on the patient's personal characteristics and status, therefore was considered to be a factor in reducing brain tissue extraction rate. The related articles of $^{99m}Tc$-HMPAO cerebral blood flow SPECT speculates a cerebrovascular disease and factors resulting from portal veins, and it was not possible to pin point the exact cause of decreasing brain tissue extraction rate. However, the $^{99m}Tc$-HMPAO cerebral blood flow SPECT scan proved to be extremely useful in tracking and inspecting brain diseases, as well as offering accurate results from patients suffering from reduced brain tissue extraction rates.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of garlic by-products on performance, proximate composition, carcass characteristic, cholesterol, and blood composition of chickens. Broiler chicks were fed diets for 5 weeks with a diet 1% garlic by-product (T1), 2% garlic by-product (T2), and 5% garlic by-product (T3). There were no difference among diet in performance. In proximate composition, crude fat of chicken meat was decreased in diets by addition of garlic by-product than control, but moisture and crude ash were no significant difference. Liver weight was significantly increased (P<0.05) by the dietary supplementation with garlic by-products compared to the control diet. The total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol of treatment groups was lower than control, and the HDL-cholesterol of treatment groups was higher than control (P<0.05). Especially, T3 was significantly (P<0.05) more effective in improving cholesterol compared to other treatment groups. In blood composition, GOT of broiler was decreased in diet by garlic by-products than control group, but GPT, triglyceride, and glucose were no significantly different. In conclusion, these data indicate that supplementation of garlic by-products (T3) were most effective in decreasing total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and GOT and increasing HDL-cholesterol.
A probiotic-strain of Lactobacillus sp. was cultured in bovine blood plasma-based (BBPB) medium and freeze-dried to prepare a probiotic product as an animal feed additive. The cell mass produced in the medium, $5.2{\times}10^9$ CFU/ml, was high enough to be commercialized and was 74% of that in MRS medium. The survival rate of tactobacillus sp. against freeze-drying was affected by the conditions for treatment of cultured BBPB broth before freeze-drying such as pH adjustment, volume reduction and freezing rate. It was also found that the blood protein hydrolysate remaining in broth also enhanced the survival rate. Among various protective substances, sucrose showed a high stabilizing effect with 10% (w/v) addition, by which the maximum survival rate (48.3%) and viable cell count ($3.0{\times}10^{10}$ CFU/g) were obtained.
For the purpose of the curative effects of oral D-penicillamine in lead poisoning, D-penicillamine was orally administered to 7 lead poisoned workers which were employed in glaze product industry dealing with the lead oxide ($Pb_3O_4$). The doses of D-penicillamine was 1,200mg per day which was administered by oral 7days schedules, taking for 5 days and stopping for the following 2days, repeatedly during 3 months period. (All the poisoned workers started working again in that industry after 1 month treatment, and were treated by oral D-penicillamine for 2 months still being exposed to contaminated environment.) In order to evaluate the curative effects of D-penicillamine, 10gm of whole blood and 24 hours urine were collected every 14 days during the curative period for laboratory analysis(hemoglobin, blood lead, urine $\sigma$-aminolevulinic acid, urine coproporphyrin, and urine lead levels) with the observation of the clinical symptoms. The results were as follows; 1. Oral D-penicillamine effected good curative results as that hemoglobin, blood lead, urine $\sigma$-aminolevulinic acid, and urine coproporphyrin levels were decreased below the critical level within 1 month treatment. 2. After re-exposure, oral D-penicillamine effected to some extent as that urine lead level was decreased below the critical level after 3 months treatment with disappearence of the clinical symptoms after 2 months treatment. However, the curative effects of oral D-penicillamine in the lead exposure state is questionable since increasement of blood lead level and remarkable decreasement of urine lead level after 3 months treatment can be observed.
Upon investigating the dental health of teeth and gum, and the cleanliness of the oral cavity of female college students in the early 20's, it was reported to be that the number of cariogenic bacteria was heavily related to the acidity of saliva or ammonia. Also, cariogenic bacteria and ammonia was found out to be related with proteins (p<0.01), and ammonia, the synthetic product of cariogenic bacteria was heavily related to blood and white blood cells (p<0.01). To conclude, the healthiness of teeth was related to the acidity of saliva and ammonia, the healthiness of gum was related to blood, proteins and white blood cells while the oral hygiene was most likely to be related to ammonia. This result matched to the seven oral disease cause analyses of the saliva analysis apparatus (Sill-Ha ST-4910), which implied further utilization of this data to clinical implications. However, this study is limited to young personnel who does not have any chronic or general diseases; therefore further study is required to generalize this study.
