  • Ig Mo Cho (益母草) has been used as remedy for invigorating blood circulation to remove blood stasis and relieving edema by inducing diuresis. With regard to the botanical origin of Ig Mo Cho, it has been considered to be Leonurus spiecies of Labiatae, but there has never been pharmacognostical confirmation on it. To clarify the botanical origin of Ig Mo Cho from Korea, the anatomical characteristics of Leonurus japonicus and L. sibiricus were studied. As a result, the botanical origin of Ig Mo Cho from Korea was proved the herba of Leonurus japonicus.

  • A kind of leeches, Trachelobdella sp was detected on the inside surface of the opercle of wild crucian carp, Carassius cuvieri (21.5 cm in length and 238.5 g in weight) at a reservoir for agriculture in ChungNam Province of Korea in March, 2002. Two or three round transparent spots on the opercle could be easily detected. The fish also showed severe anemia and dorsally darking in the gill lamellae. The parasites was identified as Trachelobdella sp. on the basis of morphological characteristics such as suckers, body segmentation and lateral diverticula. As the parasites fed on host blood after attaching on the inside surface of the opercle by means of the posterior sucker, they caused severe anemia and petechial haemorrhge on the gill of infested fish. Heavy infestation of the parasite resulted in dath of fish because of large amount of blood loss.

  • In the clincal application of Hyperthermia, tissue temperature measurements are made at only a few selecte4 locations because of patient tolerance and practical clinical limitation. Since it is necessary to know the complete carcinoma cell temperature field in order to treat effectively, The difficulty of making such estimates from only a few point compounded because of the lack of knowledge of the carcinomoma cell blood perfusion characteristics. To solve the temperature on carcinoma cell, A noninvasive method (the finite element method) is used. The simulation results show that the finite element method is promising for estimating the complete corcinoma cell temerature distribution, if some knowledge of the blood perfusion pattern is available.

  • In trauma patients, coagulopathy and abnormal increases or decreases in cell counts are frequently observed, and are associated with high mortality and morbidity in the acute phase of trauma. Because major trauma is often life-threatening, and hematologic abnormalities are multi-factorial and transient, major blood loss is usually suspected to be the primary cause of these abnormalities, and much time and cost may be spent attempting to identify a focus of hemorrhage that might or might not actually exist. Persistent abnormalities in the complete blood count, however, require clinical suspicion of other hematologic diseases to minimize improper transfusions and to improve outcomes, including mortality. Physicians at trauma centers should be familiar with the clinical characteristics of hematologic diseases and should consider these diseases in trauma patients. In this report, we present cases of two hematologic disorders found in trauma patients: autoimmune hemolytic anemia induced by systemic lupus erythematosus and myelodysplastic syndrome.

  • Bypass anastomosis are frequently adopted for surgical treatments. After the bypass grafting, the bypass artery is often occluded due to restenosis and/or anastomotic neointimal fibrous hyperplasia phenomena. Optimal coronary bypass anastomosis should be investigated to improve the patency for the arterial bypass techniques. The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of bypass with sequential bypass effects in the stenosed coronary artery. Numerical analyses are focused on the understanding of the flow patterns for different sequential anastomosis techniques. Blood flow field is treated as two-dimensional incompressible laminar flow. The finite volume method is adopted for discretization of the governing equations. The Carreau model is employed as the constitutive equation for blood. To find the optimal sequential bypass anastomotic configurations, the mass flow rates at the outlet of different models are compared quantitatively.

  • The aim of this study is to apply engineering modeling tools to examine hemodynamics such as blood flow patterns or shear stress distributions, in order to determine the link between hemodynamics and cerebral aneurysms. Image-Based Simulation is used to analyze the realistic middle cerebral artery constructed from computed tomography raw data. As a result of simulation, high wall shear stress is appeared at the bifurcated region. And existence of the recirculation flow at the inlet of bifurcation($D_2$) is predict to affect at the development of the cerebral aneurysm.

  • The abuse of zipeprol, an antitussive agent, was found to be most prevalent among young people in Korea. Because abusers take large doses of this drug for its hallucinogenic effects, fatalities from zipeprol overdose abuse have been on the rise since 1991. Since 1991, a total of 69 zipeprol-related deaths have occurred throughout the nation. A demographic study shows that in ninety six percent of cases involving zipeprol alone, the victims were in their teens and twenties. The mate/female ratio in zipeprol related death was 3.5:1. Most of these zipeprol-associated deaths occurred in the larger cities of Seoul and Inchon. The blood concentration of zipeprol ranged from 0.8 to $38.3{\mu}g/mL $in single drug involved deaths, while zipeprol varied from to 35.3 $0.1{\mu}g/mL $in zipeprol and dextromethorphan victims.

  • Trypanosoma sp. (Sarcomastigophora: Kinetoplastida) was found in the blood of the Korean catfish, Silurus asotus, for the first time in Korea. The morphological characteristics of Trypanosoma sp. in the present study were similar with those of T. carassii, T. tincae and T. danilewskyi. However, the free flagellum length of Trypanosoma sp. was obviously shorter than that of those species. The species identification was reserved until elucidating the pleomor-phism according to the phase of infection and the cross infectivity among fish species.

  • Chinese crude drug 'Dang Gui' has been used mainly as a tonifying the blood, promoting blood circulation, relieving pain and moistening the bowels. To clarify the botanical origin of 'Dang Gui' from Korea, the anatomical characteristics of Angelica gigas, Angelica sinensis and Angelica acutiloba were studied. As a result, it was clarified that 'Dang Gui' from Korea was the root of Angelica gigas.

  • The relationship between home environment variables for infants and toddlers and the nature of primary caregivers were examined in the present study. The purpose of the study was to explore the possibility of home stimulation deprivation when infants were not cared by their own mothers. Primary caregivers were classified into mothers, blood related adults, and unrelated adults. The home environment was assessed with the Korean version of HOME (Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment) by means of interview and observation. The subjects of this study were 126 infants aged 3 to 36 months and their primary caregiver, adults who provided more than 8 hours day-time care for infants at home. The results were as follows : 1) The primary caregiver had an effect on the infants' home environmental stimulation. That is, the group of mothers as primary caregivers had the highest HOME scores, the second highest were blood related adults, and the unrelated adults were the last. 2) There were no sex differences in HOME scores. 3) There were significant relationships between the educational level of the caregiver and HOME. That is, the higher educational levels showed higher HOME scores.
