Iron deficiency increases blood concentrations of neurotoxic metals in children

  • Iron deficiency affects approximately one-third of the world's population, occurring most frequently in children aged 6 months to 3 years. Mechanisms of iron absorption are similar to those of other divalent metals, particularly manganese, lead, and cadmium, and a diet deficient in iron can lead to excess absorption of manganese, lead, and cadmium. Iron deficiency may lead to cognitive impairments resulting from the deficiency itself or from increased metal concentrations caused by the deficiency. Iron deficiency combined with increased manganese or lead concentrations may further affect neurodevelopment. We recently showed that blood manganese and lead concentrations are elevated among iron-deficient infants. Increased blood manganese and lead levels are likely associated with prolonged breast-feeding, which is also a risk factor for iron deficiency. Thus, babies who are breast-fed for prolonged periods should be given plain, iron-fortified cereals or other good sources of dietary iron.

좌제기제가 탄산리튬의 흡수에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Suppository Bases on Absorption of Lithium Carbonate)

  • This paper was designed to investigate the influence of different suppository bases on both the rectal absorption and dissolution rate of lithium carbonate, and to compare bioavailability from rectal administration with that from oral administration. The dissolution rates were in such order as PEG 4000, surfactant A (Witepsol 15+sodium lauryl sulfate), surfactant B (Witepsol 15+cholic acid), Witepsol 15 and cacao butter. Among various suppository bases, the blood level of lithium carbonate after rectal administration was increased in the following order: surfactant A>surfactant B>PEG 4000>Witepsol 15>cacao butter. When it comes to compare oral with rectal administration in AUC values, surfactants and PEG 4000 showed similar blood levels to oral administration, but lipophilic bases such as Witepsol 15 and cacao butter showed far lower blood level than oral administration. Peak time in oral administration was 2 hrs, but those in rectal administration using various suppository bases were $6{\sim}8$ hrs.

병태 동물에서 암피실린의 생물약제학적 연구 (A Biopharmaceutical Study on Ampicillin in Pathological Animals)

  • It was to investigate the absorption, excretion, protein binding of ampicillin in the pathological animals pretreated with carbon tetrachloride and mercuric chloride. The absorption of ampicillin was not affected in rats with damaged liver and kidney as compared with that of normal rats. The blood level of ampicillin after oral administration was increased significantly in rabbits with damaged kidney and liver. The blood level of ampicillin in rabbit with damaged kidney was more increased than that in rabbits with damaged liver. In severly damaged rabbits, it was more increased than that of mildly damaged rabbits. Urinary excretion of ampicillin in pathological animals was more inhibited than that of ampicillin in normals. Hepatic excretion of ampicillin was accelerated in rabbits with damaged kidney. However, in rabbits with damaged liver, it was inhibited as compared with that in normals. Protein binding of ampicillin was slightly enhanced by the various concentration of carbon tetrachloride and mercuric chloride, respectively. The results suggest that the increase of blood level of ampicillin in pathological animals was due to the inhibition of renal excretion.

  • This study was carried out to produce the antisera for the blood typing in cattle. Blood types of eighty cattle were previously determined by 56 kinds of internationally standardized antisera from Japan. The donorrecipient animal arrangements were determined according to tile previously determined blood types of animals by the computer program SS-l for efficient production of antisera. Six kinds of standard antisera, H,B', 12, C2, Z, U2, were produced by isoimmunirzation and absorption methods.

레반의 혈장지질 감소와 칼슘흡수율 증가 효과 (The Effects of Levan on Blood Lipids and the Absorption of Calcium in Rats Fed a Low Calcium Diet)

  • 본 연구에서는 레반의 경구 투여가 혈중 지질 및 체내 칼슘대사에 미치는 영향을 검토하고자 0.1% 칼슘제한식이를 섭취하는 흰쥐를 대상으로 각각 식이무게의 2.5%와 5% 수준의 레반을 8주간 투여하면서 대사실험을 수행하였으며 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 체중 증가량은 대조군(C)에 비하여 5% 레반을 섭취한 군에서 감소하였으며 신장의 무게는 대조군에 비하여 레반 섭취군에서 유의적으로 높았으나 간무게는 차이가 없었다. 레반의 섭취는 맹장 내용물을 유의적으로 증가시켰으며 5%레반 섭취시 맹장조직의 무게가 유의적으로 증가하였다. 혈장 triacylglycerol과 LDL-cholesterol은 대조군에 비하여 5% 레반 섭취군에서 유의적으로 감소하였으나 AI에는 차이가 없었다. 혈장 alkaline phosphatase (ALP)와 뇨중 hydroxnproline(HP) 배설량, 혈장 칼슘 농도, 체중에 대한 대퇴골 무게 비는 레반 섭취로 변화되지 않았다. 그러나 5% 레반 섭취군의 변 중 칼슘 배설량은 대조군에 비하여 유의적으로 적었으며 칼슘 흡수율은 높았다. 레반섭취군의 뇨 칼슘 배설량과 칼슘 보유량(Ca retention)은 대조군과 차이가 없었다. 본 연구의 결과로 보아 수용성 식이섬유인 레반은 혈장 지질 개선효과와 칼슘 흡수율 증가 등의 유익한 생리적 특성을 보이므로 다이어트와 정장 기능성 소재로 뿐만 아니라 심순환계 질환의 예방과 골 대사 개선용 기능성식품 소재로의 활용도 가능할 것으로 보인다.

  • The purpose of this paper was to study the effect of surfactants on the absorption and the bioavailability of ascorbic acid in the small intestine of rats and rabbits absorption of ascorbic acid in small intestine of rats was increased with tween 80 and span 80.The blood level of ascorbic acid in rabbits was elevated by combined with low concentration of surfactants but high concentration of surfactants. The bioavailability of ascorbic acid was increased by simultaneous administration of surfactants.

  • This study was performed to measure the effect of carotenoid polarity on absorption and Pigmentation in blood, muscle, and skin of laying hens. Carotenoids used in this study and Polarity were ${\beta}$-8-Apo-carotenoic acid ethyl ester(ACAEE) > astaxanthin > canthaxanthin > ${\beta}$-carotene. The chickens used in this study were 61∼78 weeks old ISA brown laying hens. Experiment #1 was designed to measure the effect of carotenoid level on the accumulation of carotenoids in carcass of laying hens after feeding for 6 weeks. D-carotene was accumulated in skin only at a detectable level when it was fed at 300 mg/kg feed. The skin was pigmented as yellow when it was measured by colorimeter. The concentration of ${\beta}$-carotene in blood was proportional to that in the feed. Pigmentation of muscle by 9-carotene was not effective. Canthaxanthin significantly increased redness of the skin(p<0.05). However, canthaxanthin did not pigment muscle. The level of canthaxanthin in the blood and skin increased as the concentration in feed increased. ACAEE at 200 and 300 mg/kg feed significantly increased yellowness of the skin(p<0.05). At all levels of ACAEE used($\geq$50 mg/kg feed) the b values of colorimeter increased. With increases in the contents of ACAEE, the concentration of ACAEE in the blood and skin increased. Compared to ${\beta}$-carotene, ACAEE and canthaxanthin were absorbed 9- and 3-fold more into the blood, respectively. The concentration of ACAEE and canthaxanthin in the skin was 1/10 of those in the blood. The lower were the concentrations of carotenoids in the feed, the higher were the absorption rates(from feed to blood and from blood to skin) The results indicated that the higher was the polarity of carotenoids, the more effective were the absorption and pigmentation. In experiment #2, the effect of carotenoid levels of feed on the accumulation of carotenoids in each body part of laying hens was determined. The colorimeter values for redness and yellowness significantly increased when canthaxanthin was fed at $\geq$50 mg/kg feed(p<0.05). Breast and thigh were not affected by feeding of canthaxanthin at the levels used. The L values of muscle but not the a and b values were significantly affected by feeding at $\geq$200 mg/kg feed for wings and breasts, respectively. The yellowness of skin and muscle significantly increased when ACAEE was fed at $\geq$ 100 and $\geq$ 200 mg/kg feed, respectively(p<0.05).

Portal Absorption of Feed Oligo-peptides in Chickens

  • The effect of duodenal infusion with feed oligo-peptide solution on portal absorption of amino acids was investigated in poultry under unanaesthetized conditions. Four peptide solutions were used in the experiment: enzymatic hydrolysates from fish meal, soybean meal, cottonseed meal and rapeseed meal proteins with average molecular weights less than 3,000 Da and 1,000 Da, respectively. Intestinal absorptions of these oligo-peptide solutions were compared by determining the concentration of free amino acid (FAA) in portal blood after the duodenal administrations of oligo-peptide solutions. Absorptive intensity and balance were used to estimate the intestinal absorption rate of amino acids. The absorptive intensities of amino acids were highest for the fish and soybean meal oligo-peptides. The ratios of amino acids absorbed in the portal blood from fish and soybean meal oligo-peptides were more similar to the composition of the infused amino acids than that observed from the cottonseed and rapeseed meal oligo-peptides. A positive correlation was found between absorption rate and proportion of PAA in the oligo-peptides. The higher absorption rate could be contributed to the higher proportion of peptide bound amino acids (PAA). The results suggest that fish and soybean meal protein are significantly more easily hydrolyzed into oligo-peptides (p<0.05) in the gastrointestinal tracts of poultry and as such can be utilized more effectively by body tissues.

치석의 혈형물질에 관한 연구 (STUDIES ON BLOOD GROUP SPECIFIC SUBSTANCE IN THE DENTAL CALCULUS)

  • Twenty Four cases of calculus, which were collected feom the patients, were tested by a serological agglutinin absorption test and the following results were obtained. 1) In all observed xases, blood group specific substances were detected, and this results were agreed with blood group of observed patients. 2) Because the α titer of O-serum is somewhat higher than B, we have come to a conclusion that O type and B type results must be reexamined with much more weighted sample than other type cases.

휴대폰 전자파의 혈액 조사를 위한 SAR별 TEM 셀의 입력 전력 산출 (Input Power Determination of TEM Cell Due to SAR for Mobile Phone Wave Blood Exposure)

  • TEM 셀 내에 있는 혈액에 대한 삽입 손실과 반사율을 측정하여, 원하는 혈액 흡수 SAR(Specific Absorption Rate) 선택에 따른 TEM셀 입력 전력을 구하였다. 혈액 세포는 피부 세포와 함께 전자파 영향을 연구하기 위한 기준 세포이다. 따라서 SAR에 따른 혈액 세포에 인가할 전력 산출은 정확해야 함은 물론 타당성이 있어야 한다. 이 연구에서는 g당 혈액 세포가 받는 전력을 산출하기 위해 50 g의 혈액을 이용하여 전달 전력 감소를 측정하였다. 측정된 데이터로부터 휴대폰 전자파 생체 흡수율 SAR 0.8, 1.6, 3, 4 mW/g에 해당하는 TEM셀 입력 전력을 계산하였다. 이 연구 결과는 배양 세포의 전자파 방사 장치에 응용함을 목적으로 하고 있다.
