  • The purpose of this study is to suggest some alternative on site planning of elementary school through investigating the effects of geographical and urban environment on the site. For this, we selected and surveyed 35 schools in Gwangju. The results of this study are as follows. 1) We cannot find out the differences from the use of elementary schools sites on slopes of sites. However, the sunken space between H type buildings in the site slopes facing east or west and the placing the playground on the north side of the site slopes facing north have some problems 2) The number of adjacent road and surrounding environment didn't show any effect. To separate between cars and pedestrians, we need some plans to block cars on the pedestrian gateway and it is much better to intensify the parking area near the school gate that cars come in and out. 3) The degree of satisfaction on the outdoor facilities of these cases shows low level. Therefore, to use the site of schools efficiently, we should secure the spacious playground and make plans to provide some spaces around school building for the static activities of students and teachers. 4) Most of all, the site which is suitable for educational environment should be selected. and also Special Code on the urban plan should be established to develop this one.

  • The optimum blasting pattern to excavate a quarry efficiently and economically can be determined based on the minimum production cost, which is generally estimated according to rock fragmentation. Therefore, it is a critical problem to predict fragment size distribution of blasted rocks over an entire quarry. By comparing various prediction models, it can be ascertained that the result obtained from Kuz-Ram model relatively coincides with that of field measurements. Kuz-Ram model uses the concept of rock factor to signify conditions of rock mass such as block size, rock jointing, strength and others. For the evaluation of total production cost, it is imperative to estimate 3-D spatial distribution of rock factor for the entire quarry. In this study, a sequential indicator simulation technique is adopted for estimation of spatial distribution of rock factor due to its higher reproducibility of spatial variability and distribution models than Kriging methods. Further, this can reduce the uncertainty of predictor using distribution information of sample data. The entire quarry is classified into three types of rock mass and optimum blasting pattern is proposed for each type based on 3-D spatial distribution of rock factor. In addition, plane maps of rock factor distribution for each ground level are provided to estimate production costs for each process and to make a plan for an optimum blasting pattern.

  • This study aims at proposing a sound and sustainable development direction of an residential environment by analyzing testimonies of residents who lived in Park Hill flats or their surround at Sheffield City in the United Kingdom. The results are obtained through the analysis on a residential environment of Park Hill flats, opinions of the residents on its refurbishment, and effects of the building on the residential environment. The block of Park Hill flats was a community with a strong unity and solidarity, but that became increasingly a slum by the decline of the physical and social environment since the 1980s. In particular, it was identified that the deterioration of the social environment than that of the physical environment was a major cause of the decline. Nevertheless, it was found that "streets in the sky", the concept applied in Park Hill, played a key role in activating the community in the apartment complex. However, that street system in the complex has caused noise, poor security, and invasion of privacy. If such problems are solved, the streets in the sky will be a meaningful alternative for community activation and then ensuring sustainability in Korean residential environments that lost the function of the community.

  • As entering the information age of the 21st century, Korea is actively processing many digitalizing businesses related to information source of the Korean academic science at the government level based on the Korean advanced digital technologies, which makes them more evolved through the internet networks in Korea. The definition of 'Newly found ideographs(新出漢字)' are made by researching and extracting from the old Chinese documents through the digitalizing process and they are not registered yet among the block of Unicode & extended Chinese characters those are existent international standard. Presently Korea is in the middle of brisk developing computerized old documents in the huge scale. Meanwhile, the international standard of Chinese characters in mostly Asian countries where using them is processing and developing by IRG. Therefore, Korean processing works is very important which are included extracting precisely 'Newly found ideographs' founded from building its database, organizing as an international standard code, submitting the International organization and finally registering as the best standard code.

  • The toilet in school building is one of most crucial elements for the recent changing face in school design, but the number of toilets and urinals in most school may not be sufficient to meet current needs, especially in the girl's toilet rooms. This study aims to suggest a guideline in designing the toilet in school buildings and propose the optimum area and development of models. The survey for this study is conducted through questionnaires collected and research from 9 schools in Seoul. The results of this study, it is suggested that the number of toilet facilities in school buildings be required by ratio of 0.5 toilets per a class and 1.1 urinal per a class for boy. In case of girls, it is suggested that ratio of 1.6 toilets per a class. Based on the result, it also propose various unit plans for each class block with space such as rest zone, green zone, powder zone etc.

  • To install turnout on the main line of high speed railway running 300km/h, measures of rail destressing of existing line, speed-up plan, shortening the installation time and other important technical measures should be considered to reduce the inconvenience of passenger. In particular, for the newly constructing Ohsong and Kimcheon-Gumi station in KyongBu high speed line, it must be difficult to install divided turnout part because it should be done within short night block out hours (6 hours per day) and KTX trains are safely serviced just in time, which is not only the first time in the domestic and but also very rare practical experience in the world. This thesis is covered with experienced work conditions, required equipments and various safety measures, etc.

  • Functional mismatch and thought and plan-less material use of recently built boundary barriers in rural areas should greatly degrade their amenity value as one of linear villagescapes, but, their present state-of-art basically necessary for problem-solving had never surveyed up to now. From this point of view, this study tried to investigate present stock quantities and qualities of boundary barriers in rural areas by sample studies on 21 case villages(7 types ${\times}$ 3 cases) and comparative analysis between the planned or improved and nots. Wall type was absolutely dominated in the structural terms, of which more than half was used cement block as building material and, therefore, grey-colored. More than half of total barrier length were fully shielded, while relatively partially shielded in the mountainous villages in open space and 'Cultural villages' with closed housing structures. Free standing style of barriers was shown along over two thirds of their total length, although not more than half in planned reclaimed villages. Especially, because of one-sided wall type structure, mismatched over-shieldness and poorer maintenance condition of the boundary barriers in peri-urban villages, there should be provided with very intensive improvement efforts for amenity barriers.

  • PURPOSES : Pavement Management System contains the data that describe the condition of the road. Under limited budget, the data can be utilized for efficient plans. The objective of this research is to develop a mixed integer program model that maximizes remaining durable years (or Lane-Kilometer-Years) in road maintenance planning. METHODS : An optimization model based on a mixed integer program is developed. The model selects a cluster of sectors that are adjacent to each other according to the road condition. The model also considers constraints required by the Seoul Metropolitan Facilities Management Corporation. They select two lanes at most not to block the traffic and limit the number of sectors for one-time construction to finish the work in given time. We incorporate variable cost constraints. As the model selects more sectors, the unit cost of the construction becomes smaller. The optimal choice of the number of sectors is implemented using piecewise linear constraints. RESULTS : Data (SPI) collected from Pavement Management System managed by Seoul Metropolitan City are fed into the model. Based on the data and the model, the optimal maintenance plans are established. Some of the optimal plans cannot be generated directly in existing heuristic approach or by human intuition. CONCLUSIONS:The mathematical model using actual data generates the optimal maintenance plans.

  • This study aims to examine Japanese elementary school architecture in Meiji Era, in which Japanese modern education system was settled down and the school architecture flourished by mass construction of stereotyped school buildings. It is assumed that stereotyped school architecture is due to the influence of the standard drawings made by Japanese Ministry of Education, therefore standard drawings could be a key to understand the characteristics of the stereotyped school buildings in Meiji Era. In this perspective this study attempts to analyze 4 standard drawings and interpret it in relation to regulations and design guidelines for school architecture in that time. As results of this study the change and characteristics of stereotyped school architecture in Meiji Era are clarified in several categories. They are as follows : the deviation of classroom and corridor, the change of classroom size fixing to 4 kan(間) by 5 kan(間), the absolute use of north-lacing single corridor type block-plan, and the change of other space such as waiting room(控所), special instruction room, auditorium and gymnasium.
