  • In this paper, we propose a moving object detection and tracking method for multi-view camera environment. Based on the similarity and characteristics of motion vectors and coding block modes extracted from compressed bitstreams, validation of moving blocks, labeling of the validated blocks, and merging of neighboring blobs are performed. To continuously track objects for temporary stop, crossing, and overlapping events, a window based object updating algorithm is proposed for single- and multi-view environments. Object detection and tracking could be performed with an acceptable level of performance without decoding of video bitstreams for normal, temporary stop, crossing, and overlapping cases. The rates of detection and tracking are over 89% and 84% in multi-view environment, respectively. The rates for multi-view environment are improved by 6% and 7% compared to those of single-view environment.

  • An experimental study was performed to observe the in vivo effects of praziquantel on the light and scanning electron microscopic morphology of Fibricola seoulensis. The metacercariae were obtained from the snakes and 1, 000 in each number was orally given to total 15 albino rats; 5 controls and 10 treatment group. Seven days later the 10 rats were treated with 10 mg/kg praziquantcl and sacrificed 1~24 hours later to search for the worms from their small intestines. The major light microscopic changes in the drug-exposed worms were early contraction followed by relaxation of especially their forebody, vacuolization of the tegument and subtegumental parenchymal layers, and narrowing of the intestinal lumens. The scanning electron microscopic findings were characterized by formation of numerous blebs followed by rupture and subsequent destruction of their whole teguments. These results show that the change in worm body is not confined to the tegument but extends to deeper parenchymal portions and also occurs in their intestines. It is suggested that the drug uptake by the worms should be either through their tegument or through the digestive tract.

  • Oils and chlorinated solvents leaking to the subsurface are entrapped in the soil pore and these are called as nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPL). NAPL entrapped in porous media acts as a continuous source for surface and ground water contamination. This study visualized dissolution of trichloroethylene (TCE) entrapped in porous media and quantified the velocity of TCE dissolution using an image analysis technique. As the water velocity increased, the level of dissolution increased. The results imply that a TCE contaminated region having a high infiltration rate and groundwater velocity may result in severe groundwater contamination. Microscopic images of TCE entrapped in porous media showed that TCE present in the preferential flow paths was easily dissoluted into the water phase. However, TCE present in the stagnant flow region was visualized for long time. The results imply that TCE would be still present in the soil if TCE is detected in goundwater.

  • In clustering for image segmentation, large amount of computation and typical segmentation errors have been important problems. In the paper, we suggest a new method for minimizing these problems. Markers in marker-controlled watershed transform represent segmented areas because they are starting-points of extending areas. Thus, clustering restricted by marker pixels can reduce computational complexity. In our proposed method, the markers are selected by Gabor texture energy, and cluster information of them are generated by FCM (fuzzy c-mean) clustering. Generated areas from watershed transform are merged by using cluster information of markers. In the test of Brodatz' texture images, we improved typical partition-errors obviously and obtained less computational complexity compared with previous FCM clustering algorithms. Overall, it also took regular computational time.

  • DaVinci processors are popular media processors for implementing embedded multimedia applications. They support dual core architecture: ARM9 core for video I/O handling as well as system management and peripheral handling, and DSP C64+ core for effective digital signal processing. In this paper, we propose our efforts for optimal implementation of object tracking algorithm in DaVinci-based smart camera which is being designed and implemented by our laboratory. The smart camera in this paper is supposed to support object detection, object tracking, object classification and detection of intrusion into surveillance regions and sending the detection event to remote clients using IP protocol. Object tracking algorithm is computationally expensive since it needs to process several procedures such as foreground mask extraction, foreground mask correction, connected component labeling, blob region calculation, object prediction, and etc. which require large amount of computation times. Thus, if it is not implemented optimally in Davinci-based processors, one cannot expect real-time performance of the smart camera.

  • In this paper, we propose a computer vision based automatic defect detection method from ceramic image for non-destructive testing. From region of interest of the image, we apply brightness enhancing stretching algorithm first. One of the strength of our method is that it is designed to detect defects of images obtained from various thicknesses, that is, 8, 10, 11, 16, and 22 mm. In other cases we apply histogram based binarization algorithm. However, for 8 mm case, it may have false positive cases due to weak brightness contrast between defect and noise. Thus, we apply modified fuzzy binarization algorithm for 8 mm case. From the experiment, we verify that the proposed method shows stronger result than our previous study that used Blob labelling for all five thickness cases as expected.

  • Most of the research in the multi-touch area is based on the FTIR(Frustrated Total Internal Re리ection), which is just implemented by using the previous approach. Moreover, there are not the software solutions to improve a performance in the multi touch-blobs detection or the user gesture recognition. Therefore, we implement a multi-touch table-top display that is based on the DI(Diffused Illumination), the improved touch-points detection and user gesture recognition. The proposed method supports a simultaneous transformation multi-touch command for objects in the running application. Also, the system latency time is reduced by the proposed ore-testing method in the multi touch-blobs detection processing. Implemented device is simulated by programming the Flash AS3 application in the TUIO(Tangible User Interface Object) environment that is based on the OSC(Open Sound Control) protocol. As a result, Our system shows the 37% system latency reduction, and is successful in the multi-touch gestures recognition.

  • This paper proposes a method for segmenting objects from the background in IR(Infrared) images based on GrabCut algorithm. The GrabCut algorithm needs the window encompassing the interesting known object. This procedure is processed by user. However, to apply it for object recognition problems in image sequences. the location of window should be determined automatically. For this, we adopted the Otsu' algorithm for segmenting the interesting but unknown objects in an image coarsely. After applying the Otsu' algorithm, the window is located automatically by blob analysis. The GrabCut algorithm needs the probability distributions of both the candidate object region and the background region surrounding closely the object for estimating the Gaussian mixture models(GMMs) of the object and the background. The probability distribution of the background is computed from the background window, which has the same number of pixels within the candidate object region. Experiments for various IR images show that the proposed method is proper to segment out the interesting object in IR image sequences. To evaluate performance of proposed segmentation method, we compare other segmentation methods.

  • In this paper, we propose the mobile object tracking algorithm based on the feature vector using particle filter. To do this, first, we detect the movement area of mobile object by using RGB color model and extract the feature vectors of the input image by using the KLT-algorithm. And then, we get the first feature vectors by matching extracted feature vectors to the detected movement area. Second, we detect new movement area of the mobile objects by using RGB and HSI color model, and get the new feature vectors by applying the new feature vectors to the snake algorithm. And then, we find the second feature vectors by applying the second feature vectors to new movement area. So, we design the mobile object tracking algorithm by applying the second feature vectors to particle filter. Finally, we validate the applicability of the proposed method through the experience in a complex environment.

  • Red ginsengs are inspected manually by examining those in the dark room with back light illumination. Manual inspection is often influenced by physical condition of inspectors. Sometimes. the best grade, heaven. has some inner holes though it was inspected by a specialist. In order to resolve this problem, this study was performed to develop image processing algorithm to detect the inner holes in the x-ray image of ginseng. Because of little gray value difference between background and ginseng in the image. simple thresholding method was not appropriate. Modified watershed algorithm was used to differentiate the inner holes from background and normal ginseng body. Inner hole edge region detected by watershed algorithm consists of many number of blobs including normal portions. With line profile analysis with scanning one line at a time beginning the starting point. it shelved two peaks both ends representing extracting each blobs. in which setting threshold value as of lower peak value enabled us to obtain inner hole image. Once this procedure has to be done till the finishing point it is completing inner hole detection for one blob. Thus. conducting ail blobs by this procedure is completing inner detection of one whole ginseng. Detection results of the inner holes fer various size of red ginsengs were good even though there was small detection variation. 6.2%. according to position of x-rat tube.
