  • Internal detonation of a warhead inside a compartment of naval vessel can result in serious blast damages including plastic deformation and rupture of the structural members especially bulkhead due to the huge explosive impact pressure, fragments and high temperature flame. To secure watertight integrity and to prevent the domino-type flooding of neighbouring compartments caused by the rupture of bulkheads, it is necessary to develop the structural design technology of Blast Hardened Bulkheads(BHB) which can resist the blast impact pressure of threatening weapons to increase the survivability of naval vessels. This study dealt with the simplified structural response analysis of BHB under impact pressure of confined explosion and aimed to develop the efficient and rational design method of BHB and joint structures which can be applied at initial design stage. The present 1st report dealt with the phenomena of explosive detonation surveying the preceding experimental/theoretical research and the characteristics of time history of blast pressure including the peak value and duration time were examined. And to predict the large plastic deformation behaviors of BHB by the huge blast pressure reasonably, the plastic hinge method including the membrane effects was formulated. It was applied to the simplified structural design equations. The following report will deal with the application and adjustment process of the structural scantling equations to the actual BHB design and verification of validity of them.

  • Foam ceramic materials contribute to the explosion effect weakening on concrete structures, due to the corresponding excellent energy absorption ability. The blast resistance of concrete members could be improved through steel-foam ceramics as protective cladding layers. An approach for the modeling of dynamic response of steel-foam ceramic protected reinforced concrete (Steel-FC-RC) slabs under blast loading was presented with the LS-DYNA software. The orthogonal analysis (five factors with five levels) under three degrees of blast loads was conducted. The influence rankings and trend laws were further analyzed. The dynamic displacement of the slab bottom was significantly reduced by increasing the thickness of steel plate, foam ceramic and RC slab, while the displacement decreased slightly as the steel yield strength and the compressive strength of concrete increased. However, the optimized efficiency of blast resistance decreases with factors increase to higher level. Moreover, an efficient design method was reported based on the orthogonal analysis.

  • Aeroelastic response and control of airfoil-flap system exposed to sonic-boom, blast and gust loads in an incompressible subsonic flowfield are addressed. Analytical analysis and pertinent numerical simulations of the aeroelastic response of 3-DOF airfoil featuring plunging-pitching-flapping coupled motion subjected to gust and explosive pressures in terms of important characteristic parameters specifying configuration envelope are presented. The comparisons of uncontrolled aeroelastic response with controlled one of the wing obtained by feedback control methodology are supplied, which is implemented through the flap torque to suppress the flutter instability and enhance the subcritical aeroelastic response to time-dependent excitations.

  • In the case of a vibration sensitive equipment, it require a vibration free environment to provide its proper function, therefore, it is very important to predict precisely vibration environment of microelectronics production facility due to adjacent blast work. However, it is not easy to evaluate a quantitative vibration response of structure due blast because it can be determined by the characteristics of vibration sources, propagation through rock and soil and dynamic properties of building. In this paper, vibration influence evaluation of micro-electronic Production building induced from adjacent blast activity was performed by real measurement data obtained on ground and structure at same time. And blast vibration allowable limit on ground was supposed by measurement data analysis in order to avoid operation error of precision equipments

  • In this paper, a finite element dynamic simulation study was performed to gain an insight about the blast wall test details for the offshore structures. The simulation was verified using qualitative and quantitative comparisons for different materials. Based on in-depth examination of blast simulation recordings, dynamic behaviors occurred in the blast wall against the explosion are determined. Subsequent simulation results present that the blast wall made of high energy absorbing high manganese steel performs much better in the shock absorption. In this paper, the existing finite element shock analysis using the LS-DYNA program is further extended to study the blast wave response of the corrugated blast wall made of the high manganese steel considering strain rate effects. The numerical results for various parameters are verified by comparing different material models with dynamic effects occurred in the blast wall from the explosive simulation.

  • It has been suggested that buildings designed for strong ground motions will also have improved resistance to air blast loads. As an initial attempt to quantify this behavior, the responses of a ten story steel building, designed for the 1994 building code, with lateral resistance provided by perimeter moment frames, is considered. An analytical model of the building is developed and the magnitude and distribution of blast loads on the structure are estimated using available computer software that is based on empirical methods. To obtain the relationship between pressure, time duration, and standoff distance, these programs are used to obtain an accurate model of the air blast loading. A hemispherical surface burst for various explosive weights and standoff distances is considered for generating the air blast loading and determining the structural response. Linear and nonlinear analyses are conducted for these loadings. Air blast demands on the structure are compared to current seismic guidelines. These studies present the displacement responses, story drifts, demand/capacity ratio and inelastic demands for this structure.

  • An explosion from a specific source can generate high pressure, causing damage to structures and people in and around them. For the design of protective structures, although explosion overpressure is considered the main loading parameter, parts are only considered using standard design procedures, excluding special installations. Properties of the explosive, such as molecular structure, shape, dimensional properties, and the physical state of the charge, determine the results in a high-grade or low-grade explosion. In this context, it is very important to determine the explosion behaviors of the structures and to take precautions against these behaviors. Especially structures in areas with high explosion risk should be prepared for blast loads. In this study, the behavior of non-anchored blast resistant modular buildings was investigated. In the study, analyzes were carried out for cases where modular buildings were first positioned on a reinforced concrete surface and then directly on the ground. For these two cases, the behavior of the modular structure placed on the reinforced concrete floor against burst loads was evaluated with Stribeck curves. The behavior of the modular building placed directly on the ground is examined with the Pais and Kausel equations, which consider the structure-ground interaction. In the study, head and neck injuries were examined by placing test dummies to examine human injury behavior in modular buildings exposed to blast loads. Obtained results were compared with field tests. In both cases, results close to field tests were obtained. Thus, it was concluded that Stribeck curves and Pais Kausel equations can reflect the behavior of modular buildings subjected to blast loads. It was also seen at the end of the study that the human injury criteria were met. The results of the study are explained with their justifications.

  • This paper examines the dynamic response of an arch dam subjected to blast loading. A damage model is developed for three dimensional analysis of arch dams. The modified Drucker-Prager criterion is adopted as the failure criteria of the damage evolution in concrete. Then, Xiluodu arch dam serves as an example to simulate the failure behaviors of structures with the proposed model. The results obtained using the proposed model can reveal the reliability degree of the safe operation level of the high arch dam system as well as the degree of potential failure, providing a reliable basis for risk assessment and risk control.

  • The response of concrete structures subjected to shock and blast load involves a rapid transient phase, during which material breach may take place. Such an effect could play a crucial role in determining the residual state of the structure and the possible dispersion of the fragments. Modelling of the transient phase response poses various challenges due to the complexities arising from the dynamic behaviour of the materials and the numerical difficulties associated with the evolving material discontinuity and large deformations. Typical modelling approaches include the traditional finite element method in conjunction with an element removal scheme, various meshfree methods such as the SPH, and the mesoscale model. This paper is intended to provide an overview of several alternative approaches and discuss their respective applicability. Representative concrete material models for high pressure and high rate applications are also commented. Several recent application studies are introduced to illustrate the pros and cons of different modelling options.
