  • Experiments were conducted in a low speed stationary annular cascade to investigate local heat transfer characteristics on the tip and shroud and the effect of inlet Reynolds number on the tip and shroud heat transfer. Detailed mass transfer coefficients on the blade tip and the shroud were obtained using a naphthalene sublimation technique. The turbine test section has a single stage composed of sixteen guide vanes and blades. The chord length and the height of the tested blade are 150 mm and about 125 mm, respectively. The blade has flat tip geometry and the mean tip clearance is about $2.5{\%}$of the blade chord. The inlet flow Reynolds number based on chord length and incoming flow velocity is changed from $1.0{\times}10^{5}\;to\;2.3{\times}10^{5}.$ to investigate the effect of Reynolds number. Flow reattachment after the recirculation near the pressure side edge dominates the heat transfer on the tip surface. Shroud surface has very intricate heat/mass transfer distributions due to complex flow patterns such as acceleration, relaminarization, transition to turbulent flow and tip leakage vortex. Heat/mass transfer coefficient on the blade tip is about 1.7 times as high as that on the shroud or blade surface. Overall averaged heat/mass transfer coefficients on the tip and shroud are proportional to $Re_{c}^{0.65}\;and\;Re_{c}^{0.71},$ respectively.

  • Morphological characteristics of leaves of 10 natural populations of Quercus mongolica and 9 natural populations of Q. serrata were investigated to study inter-population and intra-population variability as well as interspecies variability. Five leaf form indices, blade length/max. blade width, blade length/petiole length, blade length/vein number, upper 1/3 blade width/max.blade width, upper 1/3 blade width/lower 1/3 blade width, as well as petiole length and vein number were included in the present study of Leaf variabilities of the Quercus population. All of the investigated leaf variabilities except for the case of blade length/petiole length, in Q. serrata indicated highly significant differences among the populations and among the individual trees within population. Both of Q. mongolica and Q. serrata represented different leaf forms between southern populations and northern populations in the indices of blade length/max. blade width, blade length/petiole length and blade length/vein number, and so the leaf forms of northern populations were more similar to the unique characters of Q. mongolica and those of southern populations were more similar to the unique characters of Q. serrata. The variability among individual trees within population was more notable in blade length/petiole length, and petiole length than in other leaf form indices, and also it was more obvious for Mt. Kyeryrong population located in middle part of the country than for other population.

  • The effects of number of blades on the hydraulic performance of the inducer were studied using a computational method. Inducers with number of blades from 2 to 4 were used for computations and the hydraulic performances of the inducers were compared. The computational results showed that the hydraulic performance decreased due to the increase of the skin friction loss at blade passages as the blade number increased. The results also showed that the strength of the backflow became weak because of the decrease of unfavorable pressure gradient as the blade number increased.

  • In the present study, the effect of blade rotation on blade heat transfer is investigated by comparing with the heat transfer results for the stationary blade. The experiments are conducted in a low speed annular cascade with a single stage turbine and the turbine stage is composed of sixteen guide vanes and blades. The chord length and the height of the tested blade are 150 mm and about 125 mm, respectively. The blade has a flat tip and the mean tip clearance is 2.5% of the blade chord. A naphthalene sublimation method is used to measure detailed mass transfer coefficient on the blade. For the experiments, the inlet Reynolds number is $Re_c=1.5{\times}10^5$, which results in the blade rotation speed of 255.8 rpm. Blade rotation induces a relative motion between the blade and the shroud as well as a periodic variation of incoming flow. Therefore, different heat/mass transfer patterns are observed on the rotating blade, especially near the tip and on the tip. The relative motion reduces the tip leakage flow through the tip gap, which results in the reduction of the tip heat transfer. However, the effect of the tip leakage flow on the blade surface is increased because the tip leakage vortex is formed closer to the surface than the stationary case. The overall heat/mass transfer on the shroud is not affected much by the blade rotation.

  • A rotating blade of steam turbines is designed using blade design system. To minimize the design time. quasi three dimensional flow analysis code is adopted to calculate blade section. The blade section lies on a streamline determined by previous steam turbine design procedures. The blade design system makes a transform of streamline coordinates, (m, r$\theta$), to (m', $\theta$) coordinates and all design procedure except 3 dimensional stack-up is performed in the coordinates. Each designed blade section is stacked-up and whole 3 dimensional blade can be modified by correcting 2D section, repeatly. The full 3D numerial analysis for the one stage including designed rotating blade will be performed later

  • The effect of agitation on the dispersion of organic phase was investigated in an immiscible liquid system (n-hexane/40 wt % p-TSA aqueous solution). Four different types of six-bladed turbine impellers were used : a flat blade type and three screen blade types. The experimental results showed that the extent of dispersion of organic phase at the same agitation speed was decreased in the order of flat blade, 60 mesh, 40 mesh, and 20 mesh screen blades. Otherwise, it was increased with increasing the concentration of TBA as a surfactant agent and with decreasing volume fraction of organic phase. Also, the minimum agitation speed for a complete dispersion was increased in the order of flat blade, 60 mesh, 40 mesh, and 20 mesh screen blades. However, the minimum power consumption did not vary significantly. In this condition, the relationship between Power number and Reynolds number was expressed as $N_p=a\;N_{Re}{^b}$, where the values of constant a and constant b were ranged 2200~4100 and -0.69~-0.63 respectively.

  • This experiment was conducted to study the physiological and ecological responses of agronomic characters related to source and sink relation in rice. Standard deviation and coefficient of variability of agronomic characters by individual tiller were greatly influenced by the lower internodes in the length of internode, flag leaf in the leaf blade, lower leaf blade in the leaf width, and the number and spikelets of secondary rachis branch in panicle. In relation to the parts of source and sink of rice plant and the number of spikelet in panicle, the number of spikelet was significantly correlated with the length and leaf area of second leaf blade, the length of second internode, and culm diameter of third internode. The correlation of the length of panicle with the length of internode and leaf blade was greatly influenced by the length of second leaf blade and second internode. The number of spikelet was increased with increasing the second rachis branch rather than first rachis branch. The content of total inorganic nutrients was greatest at leaf blade followed by leaf sheath and internode, and panicle.

  • Deterioration of surface of turbomachinery blades occurs in course of time due to many factors and hence reduces the performance of the machine. In this paper, the effects of surface roughness of transonic axial compressor blade on performance are studied considering a reference blade and a shape distorted (optimized) blade. Optimal blade is designed considering sweep and lean. Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model is used for flow field analysis and Cebeci-Smith roughness model is formulated for roughness modeling. It is found that, as the surface roughness increases, adiabatic efficiency, total temperature ratio and total pressure ratio decrease while Mach number increases. Performance deterioration is more severe in case of distorted blade as compared to reference blade.

  • In this paper, 1-D design of axial flow hydraulic turbine including runner blades, spiral casing with distributors(guide vanes and stay vane), and draft tube was conducted and then 3-D flow analysis was carried out using CFX-12.1. The results of 3 runners showed that with an increase in the number of blades, the flow rate and the power of the turbine system increased. On the other hand. the runner loss was not directly connected with the number of blades. As a result, proper blade number could be selected and more than 100kW small hydraulic turbine could be designed.
