A modeling method for the modal analysis of a pre-twisted multi-packet blade system undergoing rotational motion is presented in this paper. Blades are idealized as pre-twisted cantilever beams that are fixed to a rotating disc. The stiffness coupling effects between blades due to the flexibilities of the disc and the shroud are modeled with discrete springs. The coupling effect between chordwise and flapwise bending deflection is also considered. Hybrid deformation variables are employed to derive the equations of motion. To obtain more general information, the equations of motion are transformed into dimensionless forms in which dimensionless parameters are identified. The effects of the dimensionless parameters and the number of packets as well as blades on the modal characteristics of the rotating multi-packet pre-twisted blade system are investigated with some numerical examples.
The large-eddy simulation(LES) was carried out to evaluate the drag and static pressure acting on the blade surface of a small-size axial fan(SSAF) under the condition of unsteady-state, incompressible fluid and three-dimensional coordination. The axial component of drag coefficient increases with the increase of operating load, but the radial components have negligible sizes regardless of operating loads. Otherwise, the static pressures acting on the blade surfaces of SSAF show different distributions around the operating point of D equivalent to the stall. Also, with the increase of operating load, the static pressures acting on the pressure and suction surfaces of blade concentrate at the tips and leading-edges as a whole.
This paper deals with a vibration control analysis of a rotating composite blade, modeled as a tapered thinwalled beam induced by heat flux. The displayed results reveal that the thermally induced vibration yields a detrimental repercussions upon their dynamic responses. The blade consists of host graphite epoxy laminate with surface and spanwise distributed transversely isotropic (PZT-4) sensors and actuators. The controller is implemented via the negative velocity and displacement feedback control methodology, which prove to overcome the deleterious effect associated with the thermally induced vibration. The structure is modeled as a composite thin-walled beam incorporating a number of nonclassical features such as transverse shear, secondary warping, anisotropy of constituent materials, and rotary inertias.

A multi-step optimum strategy for the selection of the locations and directions of strain gauges is proposed in this paper to capture at best the modal response of blade in a series of modes on fan blades. It is consist of three steps including two pass reduction step, genetic algorithm and fine optimization to find the locations-directions of strain gauges. The optimization is based upon the maximum signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) of measured strain values with respect to the inherent system measurement noise, the mispositioning of the gauge in location and gauge failure. Optimal gauge positions for a fan blade is analyzed to prove the effectiveness of the multi-step optimum methodology and to investigate the effects of the considering parameters such as the mispositioning level, the probability of gauge failure, and the number of gauges on the optimal strain gauge position.

Vibration problems induced by an air cooled heat exchanger with axial flow fan were investigated during the operation of a petrochemical plant. Two different studies were done; one was experimental field test and the other was theoretical verification. To find main cause of the blade passing frequency of the fan after installing additional blockage board at the air inlet of the axial fan, the frequency spectrum was measured. The vibrations of the blade passing frequency became higher. The natural frequency of driving support of the heat exchanger was theoretically calculated. It was approximately equal to the blade passing frequency. During the normal operation of the plant, it was impossible to modify the structure of the driving support. Instead, the blade number was increased to reduce vibration level. It increased the ratio of the forcing frequency to the natural frequency of the driving support over the resonance region.

A three-dimensional computation was conducted to understand effects of the low Reynolds number on the loss characteristics in a transonic axial compressor, Rotor67. As a gas turbine becomes smaller in size and it is operated at high altitude, the operating condition frequently lies at low Reynolds number. It is generally known that wall boundary layers are thickened and a large separation occurs on the blade surface in axial turbomachinery as the Reynolds number decreases. In this study, it was found that the large viscosity did not affect on the bow shock at the leading edge but significantly did on the location and the intensity of the passage shock. The passage shock moved upstream towards leading edge and its intensity decreased at the low Reynolds number. This change had large effects on the performance as well as the internal flows such as the pressure distribution on the blade surface, tip leakage flow and separation. The total pressure rise and the adiabatic efficiency decreased about 3% individually at the same normalized mass flow rate at the low Reynolds number. In order to analyze this performance drop caused by the low Reynolds number, the total pressure loss was scrutinized through major loss categories such as profile loss, tip leakage loss, endwall loss and shock loss.
This paper describes an experimental analysis for improving the stability of blade failure due to the vibration resonance, which happens in the low-pressure steam turbine. Some cracks due to high cycle fatigue were found in the blades of a low-pressure turbine after long time operation. Impact test showed that such failure was mainly caused by the resonance. In other words, since one of the natural frequencies of the grouped blade is very close to the excitation frequency of the nozzle, the resonant vibration leads to a large amplitude of displacement and results in a large amount of stress that may cause fatigue failures in the blades. It is interesting that the blade failures occur only at blades neighboring with the nodal points of the natural vibration mode whose natural frequency is close to the nozzle passing frequency. The effective methods for increasing the reliability against the blade vibration are a heightening the fatigue limit of the blade using an advanced material and a removing the resonance away from the operating speed. It is well known that the removal of theresonance could be obtained by the installation of different types of shrouds, wires, and links between the blades as well as by the chance of the number of nozzles. In the present work, two kinds of modification for avoiding the resonance haute been considered; 1) slot-type finger, 2) long span cover. Full-scale mockup tests have been performed in order to confirm the verification for modification in the shop. Test results show that the use of long span cover is very useful to change the natural frequencies of the grouped blade and to avoid the resonance effectively.

The Korean peninsula has a number of coastal sites where the rhythmic rising and lowering of water surface due to tides results in strong tidal current. The kinetic energy of these currents can be efficiently exploited by use of tidal current turbines. This paper investigates the characteristics of helical turbine based on in-field test. The experimental frame was constructed at the Uldolmok narrow channel between Jindo and Haenam and installed the helical turbine of diameter 2.2 m and height 2.5 m. 3-blade turbine had the maximum efficiencies of about 30% in the current velocity range between 1.5 and 2.3 m/s and 6-blade turbine han the maximum efficiencies of about 25%. The efficiency was constant with the current velocity. TSRs of 3-blade and 6 blade turbines were observed as 2.4 and 1.9 respectively.

In this paper, a 1MW HAWT(FIL-1000) rotor blade has been designed by BEMT(Blade Element Momentum Theory) with Prandtl's tip loss. Also, a 3-D flow and performance analysis on the FIL-1000 rotor blade has been carried out by using the 3-D Navier-Stokes commercial solver (CFX-5.7) to provide more efficient design techniques to the large-scale HAWT engineers. The rated power and itsapproaching wind velocity at design point (TSR=7.5) are 1MW and 9.99m/s respectively. The rotor diameter is 54.5m and the rotating speed is 26.28rpm. Airfoils such as FFA W-301, DU91-W-250, DU93-W-210, NACA 63418, NACA 63415 consist of the rotor blade from hub to tip. Recent CFX version, 5.7 was adopted to simulate 3-D flow field and to analyze the performance characteristics of the rotor blade. Entire mesh node number is about 730,000 and it is generated by ICEM-CFD to achieve better mesh quality The predicted maximum power occurringat the design tip speed ratio is 931.45kW. Approaching to the root, the inflow angle becomes large, which causesthe blade to be stalled in the region. Therefore, k-$\omega$ SST turbulence model was used to predict the quantitative flow information more accurately. Application of commercial CFD code to optimum blade design and performance analysis was proved to be more effective environment to HAWT blade designers.

A computational study on unsteady compressible flows has been performed by adopting a low Reynolds number $k-{\omega}$ turbulence model in conjunction with dual time stepping scheme. An explicit four-stage Runge-Kutta scheme for the Navier-Stokes equations and an approximate factorization scheme for the $k-{\omega}$ turbulence model equations are used. Computational results obtained for blade surface pressure distributions in the process of rotor-stator interaction in a turbine stage are in good agreement with extant experimental data. The effects of the wake from the stator on the boundary-layer transition over the rotor blade surface are discussed by showing that high intensity turbulence of the stator wake induces an early transition.
