It is important to predict accurately reverberation level, which is a limiting factor in underwater target detection. Recently, the studies have been expanded from monostatic sonar to bistatic sonar in which source and receivers are separated. To simulate the bistatic reverberation level, the computation processes for propagation, scattering strength, and scattering cross section are different from those in monostatic case and more complex computation processes are required. Although there have been many researches for bistatic reverberation, few studies have assessed the bistatic scattering cross section which is a key factor in simulate reverberation level. In this paper, a new method to estimate the bistatic scattering cross section is suggested, which uses the area of intersection between two circles. Finally, the reverberation levels simulated with the scattering cross section estimated using the method suggested in this paper are compared with those estimated using the methods previously suggested and those measured from an acoustic measurements conducted in May 2013.
Low-frequency hi-static reverberation model (LHYREV-B, Low-frequency Hanyang univ. Reverberation model-Bistatic) based on the parabolic approximation for shallow water environment is presented. In this paper bistatic reverberation level is computed using the angle-independent scattering strength function and the wave-based acoustic model. The signal simulated by the LHYREV-B model is compared with the observed signals and it is shown that the LHYREV-B model provides a closer fit to the observed signals.
Mid-Frequency bistatic reverberation level is modeled using ray theoretic algorithms. The algorithm assumes multiple forward/backward scatter along with reciprocity in the Propagation paths. The environments modeled are assumed to be range independent in bathymetry, bottom scattering and surface scattering. Mid-Frequency bistatic scattering algorithm is used as a scattering model. A comparison of predicted reverberation versus time with measured data is presented to verify the bistatic reverberation model. The result demonstrates that it is possible to obtain reasonable reverberation Predictions in experimental site.
In this study, the reverberation of a bistatic sonar operated in southeastern coast in the East Sea in July 2020 was analyzed. The reverberation sensor data were collected through an LFM sound source towed by a research vessel and a horizontal line array receiver 1 km to 5 km away from it. The reverberation sensor data was analyzed by various methods including geo-plot after signal processing. Through this, it was confirmed that the angle reflected from the sound source through the scatterer to the receiver has a dominant influence on the distribution of the reverberation sound, and the probability distribution characteristics of bistatic sonar reverberation varies for each beam. In addition, parametric factors of K distribution and Rayleigh distribution were estimated from the sample through moment method estimation. Using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test at the confidence level of 0.05, the distribution probability of the data was analyzed. As a result, it could be observed that the reverberation follows a Rayleigh probability distribution, and it could be estimated that this was the effect of a low reverberation to noise ratio.
To detect underwater targets using sonar, sonar performance analysis that reflects the ocean environment and sonar characteristics must be performed. Sonar performance modeling of passive and monostatic sonar can be performed relatively quickly even considering the ocean environment. However, since bistatic and multistatic sonar performance modeling require higher computational complexity and much more time than passive or monostatic sonar cases, they have been performed by simplifying or not considering the ocean environment. In thisstudy, the effects of reverberation and ocean environment in bistatic sonar performance were analyzed using the bistatic reverberation modeling in the Ulleung Basin of the East Sea. As the sonar operation depth approaches the sound channel axis, the influence of the bathymetry on sound propagation is reduced, and the reverberation limited environment is formed only at short distances. Finally, it was confirmed that similar trends appeared through comparison between the simplified and elaborately calculated sonar performance modeling results.
To detect targets with active sonar system in the underwater environments, the targets are localized by receiving the echoes of the transmitted sounds reflected from the targets. In this case, reverberation from the scatterers is also generated, which prevents detection of the target echo. To detect the target effectively, reverberation suppression techniques such as pre-whitening based on autoregressive model and principal component inversion have been studied, and recently a Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF)-based technique has been also devised. The NMF-based reverberation suppression technique shows improved performance compared to the conventional methods, but the geometry of the transducer and receiver and attenuation by distance have not been considered. In this paper, the performance is improved through preprocessing such as the directionality of the receiver, Doppler related thereto, and attenuation for distance, in the case of using a continuous wave with a bistatic sonar. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed system, simulation with a reverberation model was performed. The results show that the detection probability performance improved by 10 % to 40 % at a low false alarm probability of 1 % relative to the conventional non-negative matrix factorization.

Bubbles generated by various causes in the ocean are known to persist for long periods of time. Although the volume occupied by bubbles in the ocean is small, the presence of bubbles in ocean due to resonance and attenuation greatly affects the acoustic properties. Accordingly, bistatic reverberation experiment was performed in the ocean where artificial bubbles exist. A number of transducers and receivers were installed on 6 buoys arranged in a hexagonal shape, and blowing agents were dropped in the center of the buoy to generate bubbles. For reverberation modeling that reflects acoustic characteristics changed by bubbles, the spatial distribution of bubbles was estimated using video data and received signals. A measurement-based bubble spectral shape was used, and it was assumed that the bubble density within the spatial distribution of the estimated bubble was the same. As a result, it was confirmed that the bubble reverberation was simulated in a time similar to the measured data regardless of the bubble density, and the bubble reverberation level similar to the measured data was simulated at a void fraction of about 10-7 ~ 10-6.8.
126-kHz bistatic sea surface scattering measurements were conducted in the shallow waters off the east coasts of Korea. The range from source to receiver was altered to change the scattering angle at the grazing angles of 38% and 52% . Unlike bottom scattering signal, the arrival time and the amplitude of sea surface scattering signals were varied due to the fluctuation of sea surface. The measured forward scattering strengths were compared to model predictions of Kirchhoff approximation and small slope approximation. In overall, the tendency of the scattering strengths showed reasonable agreement among the experimental data, Kirchhoff approximation, and small slope approximation.

In this paper, the incoherent reverberation model based on coupled normal mode method is presented. In the range dependent environment, one way coupled normal mode method is used to calculate the pressure from a source to a scatterer patch and the pressure from a scatterer patch to a receiver. For the computational efficiency, the sound propagation from a source/receiver to the scatterer patch is assumed to occur only in the 2D plane where a source/receiver and scatterer patch are located. For the model verification, problems of the reverberation modeling workshop I and II sponsored by the US office of Naval Research are calculated and the results are compared with the incoherent reverberation model results based on the ray method.
