A specialized anthropomorphic robot hand which can be attached to the biped humanoid robot MAHRU-R in KIST, has been developed. This built-in type hand consists of three fingers and a thumb with total four DOF(Degrees of Freedom) where the finger mechanism is well designed for grasping typical objects stably in human's daily activities such as sphere and cylinder shaped objects. The restriction of possible motions and the limitation of grasping objects arising from the reduction of DOF can be overcome by reflecting a typical human finger's motion profile to the design procedure. As a result, the developed hand can imitate not only human hand's shape but also its motion in a compact and efficient manner. Also this novel robot hand can perform various human hand gestures naturally and grasp normal objects with both power and precision grasping capability.

In terms of the anatomy and mechanics of the human foot, a flexible robot foot with toes and heel joints is designed for a bipedal walking robot. We suggest three design considerations in determining foot design parameters which are critical for walking stability. Those include the position of the frontal toe, the stiffness of toes and heels, and the position of the ankle joint. Compared with the conventional foot with flat sale, the proposed foot is advantageous for human-like walking due to the inherent structural flexibility and the reasonable parameter values. Simulation results are provided to determine the design parameters and also show that the proposed foot enables smaller energy consumption.
The paper presents the motion editor for the robotic movement in the study. The Motion Editor can edit all motions which we want to need. This method is easy when the beginners edit to motions of robots. And let them have interesting in robot control. This paper proposes two methods to edit movements. First, we edit the robot's movement in VB environment, and then we use the Motion Editor to make it. Finally, we compared merit and defect with two methods. Indeed, it is convenient when we use the Motion Editor.

In this paper, we introduce a case study of developing a miniature humanoid robot that has 16 degrees of freedom and is able to perform statically stable walking. The developed humanoid robot is 37cm tall and weighs 1,200g. RC servo motors are used as actuators. The robot can walk forward and turn to any direction on an even surface. It equipped with a small digital camera, so it can transmit vision data to a remote host computer via wireless modem. The robot can be operated in two modes: One is a remote-controlled mode, in which the robot behaves according to the command given by a human operator through the user-interface program running on a remote host computer, the other is a stand-alone mode, in which the robot behaves autonomously according the pre-programmed strategy. The user-interface program also contains a robot graphic simulator that is used to produce and verify the robot\`s gait motion. In our walking algorithm, the ankle joint is mainly used for balancing the robot. The experimental results shows that the developed robot can perform statically stable walking on an even surface.

Trajectory generation is important because it determines the walking stability, continuity, and performance of a body in motion. Generally, the Linear Inverted Pendulum Mode is used for trajectory generation; however, for the sake of simplicity, the trajectory in this mode does not allow vertical motions and pitching motions of the body. This paper proposes a new trajectory generation method called Extended Linear Inverted Pendulum Mode (ELIPM) that allows vertical motion as well as pitching motion. This method can also improve the performance of locomotion by controlling the stride and locomotion frequency of a body.

This paper presents a controller for the multiple DC motors using the CAN(Controller Area Network). The controller has a benefit of reducing the cable connections and making the controller boards compact through the network including expansibility. CAN, among the field buses, is a serial communication methodology which has the physical layer and the data link layer in the ISO's OSI (Open System Interconnect) 7 layered reference model. It provides the user with many powerful features including multi-master functionality and the ability to broadcast / multicast telegrams. When we use a microprocessor chip embedding the CAN function, the system becomes more economical and reliable to react shortly in the data transmission. The controller, we proposed, is composed of two main controllers and a sub controller, which have built with a one-chip microprocessor having CAN function. The sub controller is plugged into the Pentium PC to perform a CAN communication, and connected to the main controllers via the CAN. Main controllers are responsible for controlling two motors respectively. Totally four motors, actuators for the biped robot in our laboratory, are controlled in the experiment. We show that the four motors are controlled properly to actuate the biped robot through the network in real time.
This paper deals with the gait generation of Biped Walking Robot (IWR-III) to have a continuous walking pattern like human. For this, trajectory planning with the consideration of kick action is done in each walking step, and the coordinate transformation is done for simplifying the kinematics. The trunk moves continuously for all walking time and moves toward Z-axis. Balancing motion is acquired by FDM(Finite Difference Method) during the walking. By combining 4-types of pre-defined steps, multi-step walking is done. Using numerical simulator, dynamic analysis and system stability is confirmed. Walking motion is visualized by 3D-Graphic simulator. As a result, the motion of balancing joints can be reduced by the trunk ahead effect during kick action, and impactless smooth walking is implemented by the experiment.
An intelligent miniature humanoid robot system is designed and implemented as a platform for researching walking algorithm. The robot system consists of a mechanical robot body, a control system, a sensor system, and a human interface system. The robot has 6 dofs per leg, 3 dofs per arm, and 2 dofs for a neck, so it has total of 20 dofs to have dexterous motion capability. For the control system, a supervisory controller runs on a remote host computer to plan high level robot actions based on the vision sensor data, a main controller implemented with a DSP chip generates walking trajectories for the robot to perform the commanded action, and an auxiliary controller implemented with an FPGA chip controls 20 actuators. The robot has three types of sensors. A two-axis acceleration sensor and eight force sensing resistors for acquiring information on walking status of the robot, and a color CCD camera for acquiring information on the surroundings. As an example of an intelligent robot action, some experiments on playing soccer are performed.

An energy-efficient reference walking trajectory generation algorithm is suggested utilizing allowable ZMP (Zero-Moment-Point) region, which maxmizes the energy efficiency for cyclic gaits, based on three-dimensional LIPM (Linear Inverted Pendulum Model) for biped robots. As observed in natural human walking, variable ZMP manipulation is suggested, in which ZMP moves within the allowable region to reduce the joint stress (i.e., rapid acceleration and deceleration of body), and hence to reduce the consumed energy. In addition, opimization of footstep planning is conducted to decide the optimal step-length and body height for a given forward mean velocity to minimize a suitable energy performance - amount of energy required to carry a unit weight a unit distance. In this planning, in order to ensure physically realizable walking trajectory, we also considered geometrical constraints, ZMP stability condition, friction constraint, and yawing moment constraint. Simulations are performed with a 12-DOF 3D biped robot model to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.
