In this study, a microchip system fabricated with MEMS technology was developed to detect bioelectrical signals. The developed microchip using the conductivity of gold nanoparticles could detect the biopotential with a high sensitivity. For designing the microchip, simulations were performed to understand the effects of the size and number of nanoparticles, and the sensing width between electrodes on the detection of biosignals. Then, a series of experiment was performed to validate the simulation results and understand the feasibility of the proposed microchip design. Both simulation and experimental results showed that as the sensing width between electrodes increased the conductivity decreased. Also, the conductivity increased as the density of gold nanoparticles increased. In addition, it was found that the conductivity that changes with the nanoparticles density could be approximated by a cumulative normal distribution function. The developed microchip system could effectively apply when a biosignals should be measured with a high sensitivity.
A compact biosignal monitoring device was developed. Electrodes for electrocardiogram (ECG) and a LED and silicon detector for photoplethysmogram (PPG) were used. A lead II type was arranged for ECG measurement and reflected light was measured at the finger tip for PPG. A single chip microprocessor (model ADuC812, Analog Device) controlled a measurement protocol and processed measured signals. PPG and ECG had a sampling rate of 300 Hz with 8-bit resolution. The maximum power consumption was 100 mW. The microprocessor computed pulse transit time (PTT) between the R-wave of ECG and the peak of PPG. To increase the resolution of PTT, analog peak detectors obtained the peaks of ECG and PPG whose interval was calculated using an internal clock cycle of 921.6 kHz. The device was designed to be operated by 3-volt battery. Biosignals can be measured for $2{\sim}3$ days continuously without the external interruptions and data is stored to an on-board memory. Our system was successfully tested with human subjects.

PURPOSES : This study analyzed the difference in a driver's workload between using a driving simulator and field driving in tunnel, highway. METHODS : Based on the literature review, it was found that a driver's workload could be quantified using biosignals. This study analyzed the biosignal data of 30 participants using data collected while they were using a driving simulator and during a field test involving tunnel driving. Relative energy parameter was used for biosignal analysis. RESULTS : The driver's workload was different between the driving simulator and field driving in tunnels, highway. Compared with the driving simulator test, the driver's workload exhibited high value in field driving. This result was significant at the 0.05 level. The same result was observed before the tunnel entrance section and 200 m after the entrance section. CONCLUSIONS : This study demonstrates the driving simulator effect that drivers feel safer and more comfortable using a driving simulator than during a field test. Future studies should be designed considering the result of this study, age, type of simulator, study site and so on.
A sensor network system can be an efficient tool for healthcare telemetry for multiple users due to its power efficiency. One drawback is its limited data size. This paper proposed a real-time application of data compression/decompression method in u-Health monitoring system in order to improve the network efficiency. Our high priority was given to maintain a high quality of signal reconstruction since it is important to receive undistorted waveform. Our method consisted of down sampling coding and differential Huffman coding. Down sampling was applied based on the Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem and signal amplitude was taken into account to increase compression rate in the differential Huffman coding. Our method was successfully tested in a ZigBee and WLAN dual network. Electrocardiogram (ECG) had an average compression ratio of 3.99 : 1 with 0.24% percentage root mean square difference (PRD). Photoplethysmogram (PPG) showed an average CR of 37.99 : 1 with 0.16% PRD. Our method produced an outstanding PRD compared to other previous reports.

The traditional medical equipments are devices used by medical professionals but not used in public environment. Common people, however, require light-weight medical devices to make healthcare for themselves nowadays. Those medical devices are used to monitor personal health status such as blood pulse, blood pressure, diabetes. Also, some of them are operated in mobile environment called u-healthcare. This paper implements a portable healthcare system composed of $SpO_2$(Saturation of Partial Pressure Oxygen) sensors and a gateway for detecting hypoxemia during people's leasure activity such as climbing or hiking. The $SpO_2$ sensor is designed as watch style to support dynamic exercise and the gateway is designed as necklace style to support the elderly. The result of a performance evaluation shows that the performance of the $SpO_2$ sensor using reflection technology is not lower than that of a clairvoyant styled $SpO_2$ sensor.
As the importance of cardiovascular health is highlighted, research on its correlation with blood pressure, the most important indicator, is being actively conducted. Therefore, extensive clinical data is essential, but the measurement of the central arterial blood pressure waveform must be performed invasively within the artery, so the quantity and quality are limited. This study suggested a mock circulatory robot and artificial aorta to reproduce the blood pressure waveform generated by the overlap of forward and reflected waves. The artificial aorta was fabricated with biomimetic silicone to mimic the physiological structure and vascular stiffness of the human. A pressurizing chamber was implemented to prevent distortion of the blood pressure waveform due to the strain-softening of biomimetic silicone. The reproduced central arterial blood pressure waveforms have similar magnitude, shape, and propagation characteristics to humans. In addition, changes in blood pressure waveform due to aging were also reproduced by replacing an artificial aorta with various stiffness. It can be expanded to construct a biosignal database and health sensor testing platform, a core technology for cardiovascular health-related research.

Electrical impedance tomography(EIT) can produce functional images with conductivity distributions associated with physiological events such as cardiac and respiratory cycles. EIT has been proposed as a clinical imaging tool for the detection of stroke and breast cancer, pulmonary function monitoring, cardiac imaging and other clinical applications. However EIT still suffers from technical challenges such as the electrode interface, hardware limitations, lack of animal or human trials, and interpretation of conductivity variations in reconstructed images. We improved the KHU Mark2 EIT system by introducing an EIT electrode interface consisting of nano-web fabric electrodes and by adding a synchronized biosignal measurement system for gated conductivity imaging. ECG and respiration signals are collected to analyze the relationship between the changes in conductivity images and cardiac activity or respiration. The biosignal measurement system provides a trigger to the EIT system to commence imaging and the EIT system produces an output trigger. This EIT acquisition time trigger signal will also allow us to operate the EIT system synchronously with other clinical devices. This type of biosignal gated conductivity imaging enables capture of fast cardiac events and may also improve images and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by using signal averaging methods at the same point in cardiac or respiration cycles. As an example we monitored the beat by beat cardiac-related change of conductivity in the EIT images obtained at a common state over multiple respiration cycles. We showed that the gated conductivity imaging method reveals cardiac perfusion changes in the heart region of the EIT images on a canine animal model. These changes appear to have the expected timing relationship to the ECG and ventilator settings that were used to control respiration. As EIT is radiation free and displays high timing resolution its ability to reveal perfusion changes may be of use in intensive care units for continuous monitoring of cardiopulmonary function.

We present several biosignal measurement results and analysis algorithms for the visual stimulus from International Affective Picture Sytem. Sine human body is nonlinear dynamic system, we investigated both linear and nonlinear methods. We found that the alpha wave of EEG, the chaos of peripheral blood pressure, the LF/HF of HRV and thd retutn map of RR interval were good parameters for the measuremet of human sensibility. These can be used as the parameters for the measurement of human sensibility.
