  • In this study the complex-valued continuous wavelet transform (CWT) has been applied in detection of Electrocardiograms (ECG) as response to various signal classification methods such as Fourier transforms and other tools of time frequency analysis. Experiments have shown that CWT may serve as a detector of non-stationary signal changes as ECG. The tested signal is corrupted by short time events. We applied CWT to detect short-time event and the result image representation of the signal has showed us that one can easily find the discontinuity at the time scale representation. Analysis of ECG signal using complex-valued continuous wavelet transform is the first step to detect possible changes and alternans. In the second step, modulus and phase must be thoroughly examined. Thus, short time events in the ECG signal, and other important characteristic points such as frequency overlapping, wave onsets/offsets extrema and discontinuities even inflection points are found to be detectable. We have proved that the complex-valued CWT can be used as a powerful detector in ECG signal analysis.

  • Over the past few years, a considerable number of methods have been proposed and applied for the classification of photoplethysmography (PPG). Most of the previous studies, however, focused on the qualitative description of the pulse type according to specific disease and thus provided ambiguous criteria to interpreters. In order to screen out this problem, we present a quantitative method for the pulse type classification including the second derivative of photoplethysmography (SDPTG). In the PPG signal, we have classified the signal as 4 types using the position and the presence of the dicrotic wave. In addition, we have categorized the SDPTG signal as 7 types using the position and the presence of "c" and "d" wave and the sign of "c" wave. In order to check the efficacy of the proposed pulse type classification rule, we collected pulse signals from 155 subjects with different ages and sex. From the correlation analysis, Class 1(p<0.01) and Class 2(p<0.01) in the PPG signal are significantly correlated with ages. In a similar manner Class A(p<0.01), Class C(p<0.05), Class D(p<0.01), and Class F(p<0.01) in the SDPTG signal are considerably correlated with the ages. From these observations, and some earlier ones [4], [5], we can conclude that since the newly proposed method has objectivity and clarity in pulse type classification, this method can be used as an alternative of previous classification rules including similar age-related characteristics.

  • Patient's respiration can have an effect on movement of tumor range and peripheral organs. Therefore, the respiratory signal was acquired by relation between external markers and movement of patient's abdomen during radiational therapy in order to minimize the effect of respiration. Based on this technique, many studies of rational therapy to irradiate at particular part of stable respiratory signals have executed and they have been clinically applied. Nevertheless, the phase-based method is preferred to the amplitude-based method for the rational therapy related to respiration. Because stabilization of the respiratory signal are limited. In this study, a in-house respiratory signal analysis program was developed for the phase reassignment and the analysis of the irregular respiratory signals. Various irregular respiratory patterns was obtained from clinical experimental volunteers. After then, the in-house program analyzed the factors affecting to phase assignment which is directly related to irradiated sector. Subsequently, accuracy of phase assignment was improved with removement of irregular signals by self-developed algorithm. This study is considered to be useful for not only image reconstruction and elevation of irradiating accuracy through phase assignment of RPM system but also analysis of respiratory signals. Moreover, development of 4D CT image is planed with phantom researches or clinical experiments based on this program.

  • All physical data in the real world are nonstationary signals that have the time varying statistical characteristics. Although few algorithms suitable to process the nonstationary signals have ever been suggested, these are treated the nonstationary signals under the assumption that the nonstationary signal is a piece-wise stationary signal. Recently, statistical analysis algorithms for the nonstationary signal have concentrated so much interest. In this paper, nonstationary EMG signals are mapped onto the orthogonal wavelet transform domain so that the eigenvalue spread of its autocorrelation matrix could be more smaller than that in the time domain. Then the model in the wavelet transform domain and an algorithm to estimate the model parameters are suggested. Also, an test signal generated by a white gaussian noise and the EMG signal are identified, and the algorithm performance is considered in the sense of the mean square error and the evaluation parameters.

  • In the clinical environment, measurements of some characteristics of the skeletal muscle are currently used to assess the severity of a neuromuscular disease or in some cases to assist in making a diagnosis. But a quantitative method of evaluation has not yet been introduced satisfactorily. In this paper, the skeletal EMG(biceps muscle, masseter muscle) analysis has been processed both in the time and in the frequency domain by designing the digital signal processing system based on pentium PC and transputer (IMS 7805). The experiment have been performed in five normal subjects, and various parameters have been statistically tested and compare4 As a results, the effective parameters obtained for the evaluation of skeletal EMG electrical activity are turn analysis, MiTi, MiTa, IEMG, PDF in the time domain, and are mean frequency, median frequency, skewness, kurtosis, muscle fatigue slope in the frequency domain. The designed H/W and S/W in this study can be used effectively for the establishment of EMG data base and for clinical research.

  • Recent advancements in modern transportation have led to the active development of various biomedical signal and medical imaging technologies. Particularly, in the field of cognitive/neuroscience, the importance of electroencephalography (EEG) measurement and the development of accurate EEG measurement technology in moving vehicles represent a challenging area. This study aims to extensively investigate and analyze the trends in technology research utilizing EEG during driving. For this purpose, the Scopus database was used to explore EEG-related research conducted since the year 2000, resulting in the selection of about 40 papers. This paper sheds light on the current trends and future directions in signal processing technology, EEG measurement device development, and in-vehicle driver state monitoring technology. Additionally, a ultra compact 32-channel EEG measurement module was designed. By implementing it simply and measuring and analyzing EEG signals, in-vehicle EEG module's functionality was checked. This research anticipates that the technology for measuring and analyzing biometric signals during driving will contribute to driver care and health monitoring in the era of autonomous vehicles.

  • In this paper, two general methods using time-series analysis in the functional separation of the myoelectric signal of human arm movements are developed. Autocorrelation, covariance method and sequential least squares algorithm were used to determine the model parameters and the order of signal model to describe six arm movement patterns` the forearm flexion and extension, the wrist pronation and supination, rotation-in and rotation-out. The confidence interval to classify the functions of arm movement was defined by the mean and standard deviation of total squared error. With the error signals of autoregressive(AR) model, the result showed that the highest success rate was obtained in the case of 4th order, and success rate was decreased with increase of order. Autocorrelation was the method of choice for better success rate. This technique might be applied to biomedical and rehabilitation engineering.

  • We have done a preliminary study on the detection of ventricular late potentials using high-resolution electrocardiography. We designed a battery powered low-noise ECG amplifier. We used the XYZ lead system and the amplifier provides 3 channels of X, Y, and Z signals with a conventional gain and another 3 channels of the amplitude-limited X, Y, and Z signals with high-gain. 12-bit data acquisition system interfaces the amplifiers to a personal computer for further signal analysis. Beat alignment algorithm was implemented on the low-gain signals to synchronize the signal averaging of the high-gain amplitude-limited signals. We suggest the use of the weighted vector sum of X', Y', and Z' signals based on the SNR of each channel. We speculate that this new method will increase the accuracy of the LP detector at the expense of more complicated hardware.

  • Electrogastrography(EGG), the cutaneous recording of the myoelectrical activity of the stomach using surface electrodes, is a non-invasive technique to detect gastric motility disorder, We developed a detection and analysis system for the EGG signal, which consists of hardware(bio-amplifier, filter) and softwere(user interface, analysis algorithm, patient database). The EGG signal was amplified and filtered by 3 channel bio-amplifiers, and simultaneously digitized and stored on IBM PC with a sampling frequency of 16 Hz. The stored EGG signal was analyzed using developed algorithm to extract clinically useful information from the signal. The developed system has tested through animal experiments, and is under clinical evaluation.
