  • Purpose: This study aimed conducted to investigate biomedical ethics awareness and attitudes toward dignified death and advance directives among nursing students. Methods: Data were collected through structured questionnaires from 222 nursing students with clinical practice experience, from November 7 to 23, 2015. Data were analyzed by independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis test, and Pearson's correlation coefficients using SPSS WIN 22.0. Results: The scores for biomedical ethics awareness and attitudes toward dignified death were 2.89 and 3.15, respectively. Regarding attitudes toward advance directives (ADs), most students agreed with writing ADs. The main reason given for writing ADs is "I want to receive my treatment of choice." As for the range and explanation method for ADs, 45.7% of participants responded, "do not know well." Regarding willingness toward life sustaining treatment, "only pain control, no life sustaining treatment" was indicated by 83.4% and, "all information about symptoms and prognosis" by 91.9% of participants. For willingness to write ADs, 70.0% of participants responded "yes." Conclusion: Curriculum for nursing ethics should be included in clinical training courses to improve related courses and provide an opportunity to deal with practical problems, such as biomedical ethics, death with dignity, and ADs.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate nursing students' awareness of biomedical ethics and attitudes toward death of terminal patients. Methods: A structured questionnaire was developed to examine nursing students' biomedical ethics. Their attitudes toward terminal patients' death were measured by using the Collett-Lester Fear of Death Scale. Surveys were conducted with 660 nursing students enrolled at a three-year college located in Daejeon, Korea. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon rank sum test and Kruskall Waills test. Results: Students who have experienced biomedical ethics conflicts, agreed to prohibition of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and have no religion exhibited more negative attitudes toward death compared to students without the above characteristics. Of the participants, 81.2% answered that life sustaining treatment for terminal patients should be discontinued and 76.4% replied that CPR on terminal patients should be prohibited. The majority of the correspondents stated that the two measures above are necessary "for patients' peaceful and dignified death". Conclusion: Study results indicate the need to establish a firm biomedical ethics value to help nursing students form a positive attitude toward death. It also seems necessary to offer students related training before going into clinical practice, if possible. The training program should be developed by considering students' religion, school year, experience with biomedical ethics conflicts and opinion about CPR on terminal patients. The program should also include an opportunity for students to experience terminal patient care in advance via simulation practice on standardized patients.

  • This study is a descriptive survey study that attempted to confirm clinical nurses' consciousness of biomedical ethics, moral sensitivity, critical thinking deposition, and nursing ethics code of clinical nurses, as well as to identify the factors influencing the recognition of the nursing code of ethics. The general and ethical characteristics of the subject were calculated by frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, and the difference for each variable according to the general and ethical characteristics was analyzed using SAS 9.4, independent t-test, and one-way ANOVA, and Scheffé test. The average, standard deviation, and the minimum and maximum values were used for the scores of each variable, and the correlation was determined using the Pearson correlation coefficient. Multiple regression was used to identify the factors that influence the recognition of the nurse's code of ethics. All variables showed significant correlations. Critical thinking deposition (p<.05) was the most influential variable in recognizing the code of ethics for nurses. Critical thinking deposition (p<.001), consciousness in biomedical ethics (p<.001), and moral sensitivity (p<.001) were shown to be affected in order, with 27.4% explaining power. Therefore, it is necessary to develop and apply educational programs to clinical nurses that can improve critical thinking, life and bioethics, and moral sensitivity.

  • Purpose: The internet, as a tool, avenue, and field, has wide-researching and specific ethical concerns. Internet-based research ethics is a field that spreads across numerous fields, scoping from natural and biomedical sciences to social sciences, and arts and humanities. Thus, this study which investigates research ethics within an Internet-based Research Setting will be quite valuable. Research design, data and methodology: The current authors widely took a look at prior and present literature dataset to explore research ethics within an Internet-based setting. Using numerous search engine, such as 'Goole Scholar', 'Scopus', and 'Web of Science', the current authors could obtain total 42 prior studies that are relevant with our research topic. Results: Based on the screening process in the literature datasets, this study could categorize four areas of the research ethics within Internet-based research setting as follows: (1) Human Subjects Ethics, (2) Big Data Ethical Issues, (3) Research Ethics and Cloud, and (4) Computing Interviews and Surveys Ethics. Conclusions: This study concludes that although internet-based research has many benefits, the accompanying ethical issues are many. The lack of uniformity in the concept and terminology of online research methods typically brings forth confusion and makes it hard for new researchers to develop mutual guidelines.
