  • Novel pyrazolinecarbothioamide (5) was synthesized from chalcone (3) which was prepared from 2'-hydroxy-1'-acetonaphthone (1) and 2-methoxy benzaldehyde (2). Treatment of pyrazolinecarbothioamide (5) on HCT116 cancer cell showed upregulation of p21 and downregulation of cyclin D1 protein. Flowcytometer analysis revealed that pyrazolinecarbothioamide (5) controls the expression of cell cycle regulatory proteins, which blocks cell cycle progression of HCT116 cancer cell at the G1 phase.

  • Organic mercurial fungicides, for seed treatments and dust formulations, has been increasingly used by farmers. Evaluation of the purity of organic mercurial fungicides has been performed by precipitation method at this laboratory. There are several methods for the an alyses of organic mercuric formulation, among which are (1) Precipitation met hod, (2) Volatilization method, (3) Volumetric method, and (4) Dithizon method. These methods, however, show some deffects in specificity (differentiation of organic form) and quantitativity. Polarography applied for the estimation of phenyl mercuric acetate was found to be simple, rapid and accurate. Tile fundamental method of polarography arid accuracy of analysis are discussed statistically and a satisfactory results was obtained.

  • A simple and useful model of light distribution for the biologhical tissue to the Gaussian beam is proposed. This model assumes that the incident Gaussian beam broadens into two Gaussian beams, travelling in the opposite directions as the result of both isotropic scattering and absorption in the tissue. With this assumption, two-dimensional light intensity of each flux as well as the equations of both absorption and scattering have been derived, and the validity of modeling has been confirmed experimentally. Consequently, the results paved a way for easy evaluation of the light distribution in the biological tissue.

  • Alcoholic extracts of twenty-one Saudi Arabian plants have been evaluated for their biological activities. Many of the plant extracts were observed to have weak activities against central nervous system. Rhazya stricta showed antimicrobial activity. However, any extract with antitumor activity could not be detected.

  • Metabolomics is the study of global metabolite profiles in a system (cell, tissue, or organism) under a given set of conditions. Metabolomics has its roots in early metabolite profiling studies but is now a rapidly expanding area of scientific research in its own right. In this study, the applications of metabolomics in natural product studies are explored. Ginseng is a well-known herbal medicine and has various pharmacological effects, which include antiaging, anticancer, antifatigue, memory enhancing, immunomodulatory, and stress reducing effects. Metabolomic analysis of organic acids has not been performed for evaluation whether ginseng has been cultivated using conventional or environmental-friendly farming methods. In this study, profiling analysis was conducted for organic acids (OAs) in ginseng roots produced using conventional or environmentfriendly farming methods at five locations in each of five regions. In OA profiles, lactic acid was the most abundant OA in all regions, with the exception for environmentally friendly farmed ginseng in two of the five regions, in which glycolic acid was most abundant OA. OA profiles in all regions showed isocitric acid levels were increased by environment-friendly cultivation, which suggests metabolic differences associated from farming method, and that isocitric acid might be a useful discriminatory biomarker of environmental-friendly and conventional cultivation. The results of the present study suggest metabolomic studies of OAs in ginseng roots might be useful for monitoring whether ginseng has been cultivated using conventional or environmentally friendly farming methods.
