  • In this study, the relationship between morphology and viscosity of the main culture broth of Cephalosporium acremonium M25 was investigated in a 2.5 L bioreactor. The differentiation of C. acremonium M25 showed a complex pattern during the main culture. The morphological changes of C. acremonium M25 were related to the rheological properties of the culture broth and it was well agreed with the power law model. As a result of rheology study, it was found that rheological properties of the main culture broths of C. acremonium M25 in bioreactor were closely related to morphological changes. Also, fractal dimension fairly predicted morphological and rheological changes in the main culture broth.

  • Synthetic plastics are important in many branches of industry. Although synthetic plastics provide numerous benefits, they also cause a significant environmental pollution problem because of their non-readily-biodegradability. Biodegradation may provide solution to the problem, but not enough is known about the biodegradation mechanisms of synthetic plastics. This review has been written to provide an overview of the current state of synthetic plastics (polyethylene, polyurethane, nylon, polyvinyl alcohol) biodegradation. Several biodegradation mechanisms of a few selected synthetic plastics are also presented.

  • In the present study, we examined the inhibitory effects of protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTPase) inhibitors, including sodium orthovanadate (SOV), ammonium molybdate (AM), and iodoacetamide (IA), on cell growth, accumulation of astaxanthin, and PTPase activity in the photosynthetic algae Haematococcus lacustris. PTPase activity was assayed spectrophotometrically and was found to be inhibited 60% to 90% after treatment with the inhibitors. SOY markedly abolished PTPase activity, significantly activating the accumulation of astaxanthin. These data suggest that the accumulation of astaxanthin in H. lacustris results from the concerted actions of several PTPases.

  • Recently columnar liquid crystals have been studied due to their possible application to organic conducting materials. Supramolecular columnar liquid crystals consist of mesogenic unit which can aggregate into discs that will make up the columns which associate to form a two-dimensional network. In this study, we prepared supramolecular columnar liquid crystals containing hydrogen bonding between carboxylic acid and, pyridine moieties. Thermal and structural properties of prepared complexe were investigated, and it exhibited hexagonal columnar structure ($Col_{h}$) at room temperature.

  • The isolation and charateriation of a type II restriction endonuclease from Xanthomonas citri IFO 3835 were described. This enzyme (Xci I endonuclease) is an isoschizomer of Sal I endonuclease recognizing 5'-GTCGAC-3' and cleaving at the site indicated by the arrow. Unlike Sal I endonuclease, Xci I endonuclease requries a NaCl concentration of 50mM for its maximum activity.
