The removal yield of dissolved organic matter in drinking water by biological activated carbon (BAC) process was investigated. The tested processes wer raw water-AC process (BAC1), raw water-ozonation-BAC process (BAC2), and raw water-ozonation-coagulation/sedimentation-BAC process (BAC3). The amounts of organic matter was measured as dissolved organic carbon (DOC), ulta-violet radiation at 254 nm wavelength ($UV_{254}$), total nitrogen (T-N), ammonia nitrogen (NH_3$-N), and total phosphate (T-P). As a results, 30.7% DOC was removed by BAC2 process, which showed higher removal efficiency than BAC1 or BAC3 processes. The removal yield of $UV_{254}$ in BAC1, BAC2, and BAC3 processes were observed as 45.3%, 44.6%, 58.4%, respectively. And the removal yield of ammonia nitrogen were 66%, 81%, 29% in each BAC processes. The optimal empty bed contact time (EBCT) of BAC processes was estimated as 10 minute. This study has shown that BAC process combined with ozone treatment was efficient for removing dissolved organic matter in water.

Immunometabolism, defined as the interaction of metabolic pathways with the immune system, influences the pathogenesis of metabolic diseases. Metformin and carbon monoxide (CO) are two pharmacological agents known to ameliorate metabolic disorders. There are notable similarities and differences in the reported effects of metformin and CO on immunometabolism. Metformin, an anti-diabetes drug, has positive effects on metabolism and can exert anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects via adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK)-dependent and AMPK-independent mechanisms. CO, an endogenous product of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), can exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects at low concentration. CO can confer cytoprotection in metabolic disorders and cancer via selective activation of the protein kinase R-like endoplasmic reticulum (ER) kinase (PERK) pathway. Both metformin and CO can induce mitochondrial stress to produce a mild elevation of mitochondrial ROS (mtROS) by distinct mechanisms. Metformin inhibits complex I of the mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC), while CO inhibits ETC complex IV. Both metformin and CO can differentially induce several protein factors, including fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) and sestrin2 (SESN2), which maintain metabolic homeostasis; nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), a master regulator of the antioxidant response; and REDD1, which exhibits an anticancer effect. However, metformin and CO regulate these effects via different pathways. Metformin stimulates p53- and AMPK-dependent pathways whereas CO can selectively trigger the PERK-dependent signaling pathway. Although further studies are needed to identify the mechanistic differences between metformin and CO, pharmacological application of these agents may represent useful strategies to ameliorate metabolic diseases associated with altered immunometabolism.
Xylogone sphaerospora ${\beta}$-mannanase was purified by Sephadex G-100 column chromatography. The specific activity of the purified enzyme was 8.44 units/ml protein, representing an 56.27-folds purification of the original crude extract. The final preparation thus obtained showed a single band on SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The molecular weight was determined to be 42kDa. Konjac glucomannan was hydrolyzed by the purified ${\beta}$-mannanase, and then the hydrolysates was separated by activated carbon column chromatography. The main hydrolysates were composed of D.P. (Degree of Polymerization) 3 and 4 glucomannooligosaccharides. For elucidate the structure of D.P 3 and 4 glucomannooligosaccharides, sequential enzymatic action was performed. D.P 3 and 4 were identified as M-G-M and M-M-G-M (G- and M- represent glucosidic and mannosidic link-ages). To investigate the effects of konjac glucomannooligosaccharides on in vitro growth of Bifido-bacterium longum, B. bifidum, B. infantis, B. adolescentis, B. animalis, B. auglutum and B. breve. Bifidobacterium spp. were cultivated individually on the modified-MRS medium containing carbon source such as D.P. 3 and D.P. 4 glucomannooligosaccharides, respectively. B. longum and B. bifidum grew up 3.9-fold and 2.8-fold more effectively by the treatment of D.P. 4 glucomannooligosaccharides, compared to those of standard MRS medium. Especially, D.P. 4 was more effective than D.P. 3 glucomannooligosaccharide on the growth of Bifidobacterium spp.

The influence of bacterial stress on anaerobic hydrogen-producing microorganisms was investigated in batch tests using serum bottles. Several physical and chemical stresses (i.e., heating, adding methane producing inhibitor and chemical acidification) were adapted as a pretreament of the seed sludge. In this experiment, the cultivation temperature were set at mesophilic ($35^{\circ}C$) and thermophilic conditions ($55^{\circ}C$) with adjusting pH at 5, 6, and 7 when using the mixture of food waste and activated sludge as a substrate. In conjunction with the pretreatment, hydrogen production was significantly enhanced as compared with that from untreated sludge. However, less biogas (hydrogen and methane) was produced without the pH control, resulted from the decrease of pH to below 4, mainly due to the formation of VFAs. Hydrogen and carbon dioxide gas were analyzed as main components of the biogas while methane not detected. With an application of chemical acidification, the highest hydrogen production value of 248 ml/l/day achieved at pH 7 and $35^{\circ}C$. In addition, more hydrogen gas produced when the ratio of butyric/acetic acid ratio increased. The optimum pH and temperature for hydrogen production were found to be 7 and $35^{\circ}C$, respectively.
Bacterial biomass and its activity were measured in two kinds of granular activated carbon (GAC), the experimental and existing biofiltration system in a drinking water plant. The bacterial biomass was around 210 to 250 nmol P/g WW with phospholipid concentration at acclimation of ozonation treatment. The phospholipid biomass shows more or less a declining gradient along filter depth and no clear seasonality in its values. On the other hand, the microbial activity of [$^3H$]-thymidine and [$^{14}C$]-acetate incorporation within cells increased significantly along the filter depth, showing the difference of three fold between the upper and bottom layer. These factors support the different microbial composition or metabolic activity along the depth of GAC column. Turnover rates, the rate of bacterial biomass and production of biofilm, ranged from 0.26 /hr to 0.37 /hr, indicating a highly rapid recovery itself at amature state. In the non-ozonation treatment, the bacterial biomass was lower than in the ozonation and biological activity also declined towards the filter depth. The biomass levels during cessation of ozonation in the existing GAC filters were 68% of the actively ozonated state.
Landfill waste decomposition generates a dark effluent named, leachate which is characterized by high organic matter content. To minimize these polluting effects, it becomes necessary to develop an effective landfill leachate treatment process. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of an innovative approach based on air stripping, anaerobic digestion (AD) and aerobic activated sludge treatment. A reduction of 80% of ammonia and an increase of carbon to nitrogen ratio to 25 were obtained, which is a suitable ratio for AD. This latter AD was performed in fixed bed reactor with progressive loading rate that reached 2 and 3.2 g COD/L/d for the raw and diluted leachate (1:2), respectively. The anaerobic treatment led to significant removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biogas production, especially for the diluted leachate. The COD removal was of 78% for the raw leachate and a biogas production of 4 L/d with 70% methane content. The use of the diluted leachate led to 81% of COD removal and 7 L/d biogas with 75% methane content. It allowed a removal of 77% COD and more than 97% of the organic compounds present in the initial leachate sample.

We evaluated geosmin and MIB biodegradation and adsorption mechanism of biological activated carbon (BAC) and anthracite biofilter. In steady state of BAC process, the geosmin and MIB were completely removed at the 30 min empty bed contact time (EBCT) even though low water temperature ($9^{\circ}C$) in which the activity of attached bacteria decreased. When the water temperature was $26^{\circ}C$, the microbial biomass and activity were higher at the upper layer of the biofilm than at $9^{\circ}C$, and the microbial biomass and activity decreased as the depth was deeper. This is because when the water temperature is high, the biodegradable organic matter (BOM) removal rate in the upper layer is high and the BOM amount that can't be supplied to the lower layer. The Removal rate of geosmin and MIB by BAC process did not show a significant difference compare to activity-inhibited BAC by treated with azide and the biofilter also removed the geosmin and MIB by biological action. It means geosmin and MIB could be removed by competitive relationship between adsorption and biodegradation.
To select a promising technologies for removal of odorous gases emitted from a wastewater pump station, four methods such as activated carbon (A/C) adsorption, chemical absorption (acid and alkali scrubber), and two biofilters (polyurethane (PU) and worm cast) were investigated. The average odor removal efficiencies in the PU biofilter and A/C column was over 98%, but in a worm cast biofilter and chemical absorption were below 60-80%. The removal efficiency of PU biofilter was very stable (about 98-99%) in the range of retention times of 4-36s, and a maximum elimination capacity was $1.6${\times}$10^{ 7}$$OUm^{-3}$$h^{-1}$ Deodorization costs for an activated carbon adsorption and a biofiltration method were investigated. With increasing odor intensity, the operating cost of the A/C column increased linearly, but the operating cost of the biofilteration increased slightly. The capital cost in a biofilter is about two times higher than that in an A/C column, but the operating cost is very lower than that of in A/C column. In conclusion, the biofiltration was evaluated one of the most promising technologies to control odor in a wastewater pump station.
This study aimed for developing a two stage dual media filtration system. It has a sand and activated carbon layer above the under-drain system, and a sand layer above the middle-drain system for pretreatment. When retrofitting an old sand filter bed or designing a new one, this technology can substitute the existing sand filter bed without requiring a new plant site. The removal rate of total particle is 93, and 3~7 ${\mu}m$ and 5~15 ${\mu}m$ particles are all 97%. These high removal efficiencies of each pollutant due to adsorption and biological oxidation in activated carbon filter layer. The best backwashing method of two stage dual media filtration system is ascertained by air injection, air + water injection and water injection sequence. In this study, a pilot plant of two stage and dual filtration system was operated for 4 months in water treatment plant. The stability of turbidity was maintained below 1 NTU. The TOC, THMFP and HAAFP were removed about 90% by two stage and dual media filtration system, which is almost 2 times higher than existing water treatment plant.
The study on the adsorption, the surface properties and the antibacterial effects of the Ni-treated PAN based activated carbon fibers was carried out. In the adsorption study on the Ni-treated PAN based ACFs, Type I isotherms for N1-N3 and Type II-Type III isotherms for N4-N6 were obtained, respectively. Futhermore, their adsorbed volumes slowly were decreased with the increase in the mole concentration of Ni on the treated PAN based ACFs. From the BET equation, the specific surface areas of the Ni-treated PAN based ACFs were in the range of $692.58-895.24m^2/g$. The micropore volumes obtained from ${\alpha}_s$-method using common-t value were $0.19-0.56cm^3/g$. The surfaces of PAN based ACFs partially blocked by metal after the treatment were observed from the SEM micrographs. Finally, from the antibacterial effects using Shake flask method against E. coli, the percentage of the effects was 92.5-100% and the antibacterial effect was increased with the increase in mole concentration of Ni treated.
