  • When considering marine pollution control procedures there are three general areas which demand close attention. These are: $\bullet$ oily bilge water $\bullet$ refuse $\bullet$ sewage All of these applications can be handled constantly changing to address the complexity of the waste management issues. The basic marine pollution regulations are covered by the International Maritime Organizations MARPOL 73/78 convention, with the various annexes and revisions. Of particular importance for equipment to deal with oily-water, sewage and plastic wastes.

  • Only the sand carriers fitted with hopper doors can remove their hatch covers in current regulations. However, there is no sand carriers fitted with hopper doors in korea. Through the analysis of accidents, inspection of equipment installed on ships, and evaluation of stability and seakeeping performance concerning the sand carriers, it is expected that the current exemption requirement is modified for hatch covers for sand carriers. As the result, this paper proposed the removal of hatch covers and be fitted by tarpaulin instead to protect water ingress into the holds. This can be done by making the holds smaller designed to be filled full until the top of the hold without exceeding loadline. Also, the bilge pumps should have the sufficient capacity of pumping water out in the early stage of sand-water mixture to wetted condition in approximately 1 hour and be operationally ready in every voyage conditions.

  • Discharging untreated bilge to the ocean is a cause of marine pollution. In general, bilge water contains free and/or emulsified forms of oil. Free form of oil can easily be separated by gravimetric flotation and/or proper filtration processes. However, those simple physicochemical processes could not separate emulsified oil without adding proper chemicals. Electrolytic flotation is one of promising technologies able to fulfill the effluent standard requirement, which is below 15 ppm of oil content. In this research, Electrochemical process consisting of electrochemical flotation basin was studied for the treatment of emulsified oil. In order to estimate, the effectiveness of oil separation equipment influent concentration of oil and HRT(Hydraulic retention time) were considered. Also, lab-scale electrochemical process was designed and operated in the condition of various HRT, current density, and electrode gap. Through the research, following results were obtained. From the experiment of bench scale electrochemical treatment process, it was demonstrated that the emulsified oil was treated effectively and the removal efficiency of emulsified oil from wastewater was increased with HRT and current density.

  • The roll damping characteristics of the three models of a small fishing(3 ton class fishing vessel), such as the bare hull, hull with bilge keels, and hull with bilge keels and a central wing are investigated by the free roll and head waves tests in calm water in a towing tank with the various forward speeds, initial angles and OG's. The experimental results are compared with the numerical results of mathematical modelings by the energy method for these three models and the energy dissipation patterns are also compared. And the wave length variations are also included. The experimental results are compared with the numerical results of mathematical modelings by the energy method for these three models and the energy dissipation patterns are also compared. The roll damping moment of the models is increased for zero speed cases, but as the speed increases, the effect of the waves on the roll damping of the models with the additional devices is negligible due to the much increased damping caused by the lift increase.

  • The manoeuvrability of a ship with an unwanted heel angle due to a maritime accident is changed from the original characteristics. The purpose of this study is to quantitatively investigate the change in the manoeuvring performance of a twin-screw ship under various hee angles and speed conditions. A series of free running model test campaigns were performed in the Ocean Engineering Basin of Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO) for a twin-screw car ferry vessel. Turning circle test and zig-zag 10/10 and 20/20 tests were carried out on the heel angles of 0, -10, and -19.5 degrees. In addition, two-speed conditions were considered to understand the effect of ship speed. In order to examine the effect of the bilge keel, a heel angle of -22 degree where the bilge keel is exposed outside the water surface, was considered. Finally, the change of manoeuvring characteristics according to the heel angle for a twin-screw and a single-screw vessel is discussed.

  • The corrosion loss of the shell plates and the bulkead plates of the oil tankers, nationalities of which belong to korea are determined and analyzed. The thickness of the plates are determined by use of the ultrasonic thickness meters at the check points set along the fore and aft line and the perpendicular to it. Difference between the original thickness and the determined one are given as the corrosion loss at the present age. 1. On the shell plates (1) The total mean of the corrosion loss shows the greatest value on the load water line in every age classes of the vessels. (2) The total mean of the corrosion loss on the fore and aft line shows little difference, even though it is slightly greater at the fore part, in every age classes of the vessels. (3) The corrosion loss along the perpendicular grows greater in the order of upper bilge line, light water line, freeboard line and load water line at 16 ages of the vessels, and the loss changes in the order of light water line, upper bilge line, freeboard line and load water line at 20 ages of the vessels. (4) The total mean of the corrosion loss along the light water line and upper and lower water line shows the greatest value on the fore part. That along the freeboard line and the load water line shows the greatest value on the midship part and on the after part, respectively. 2. On the bulkhead plates (1) The total mean of the corrosion loss shows the greatest value on the top part at the every age classes of the vessels. (2)The corrosion loss along the perpendicular grows greater in the order of the lower, center and upper part at every age classes of the vessels. (3) The total mean of the corrosion loss at the top part grows greater in the order of the transverse bulkhead of the side oil tank, that of center oil tank, longitudinal bulkhead of center oil tank, and transverse bulkhead of side water tank at the 20 ages of the vessels.

  • Ejectors, having no moving, lubricating and leaking parats, are widely used as marine pumps because of its high working confidence. For instance, uses in ships are stripping in crude oil tank, bilge discharge in engine room, ballast water pumping on are carrier, and brine discharge from fresh water generator. And it is also used as cooling water recirculating pump in boiling water type nuclear reactor and deep-well pump. It is not easy to determine the optimal dimension for designing each ejector agreed with its suggested performance condition, because complicated calculations must be repeated to obtain the maximum efficiency affected by flowrate ratio, head ratio, area ratio and so on. Therefore, it is considered that the CAD (Computer-Aided Design) for ejector is a powerful method for design according to the individual design condition. In this paper, a computer program for water ejector design is developed based on the previous paper on theoretical analysis and experimental results for water ejector. And from the theoretical approach, an equation for the working limit and an equation for determing the shape of throat are obtained. The validity of the present computer program is sufficiently confirmed through the comparison of the computed results with the main dimension of the previous manufactured water ejector. This program will be easily developed as the CAD for various kinds of ejectors, including steam ejector.

  • Background: Fluralaner is a novel drug belonging to the isoxazoline class that acts on external parasites of domestic animals. It is used systemically via drinking water, especially against red poultry mite in layer chickens. Fluralaner is frequently used in layers infected with D. gallinae. However, no study to date has investigated the effects of feed intake and water hardness. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effects of variable water hardness and feed intake on the pharmacokinetic profile of fluralaner. Methods: Layer chickens were divided into four groups (n = 8): fed + purified water (Group 1), feed restricted + purified water (Group 2), feed restricted + hard water (Group 3), and feed restricted + soft water (Group 4). After administering a single dose of the drug with drinking water, the blood samples were collected for 21 days. Fluralaner concentrations in plasma samples were determined by liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry. The maximum plasma concentration (Cmax), time to reach maximum plasma concentration (tmax), area under the concentration-time curve values (AUC0-21d), half-life (t1/2), and other pharmacokinetic parameters were calculated. Results: Although the highest maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) was determined in Group 1 (fed + purified water), no statistically significant difference was found in the Cmax, tmax, t1/2, MRT0-inf_obs, Vz/Fobs, and Cl/F_obs parameters between the experimental groups. Conclusions: It was concluded that the feed intake or water hardness did not change the pharmacokinetic profile of fluralaner in layer chickens. Therefore, fluralaner could be used before or after feeding with the varying water hardness in poultry industry.
